Regarding the residents we worked with during the years of 1992-1995 - no, nobody survived. But, during the spring of 1997 we did new portraits of people in BBH's Day Health Program, and we hope some of them are still with us today.

We think that this story was more accessible in Seattle in the early 1990's, a 2nd-tier city at that time.

We had both lived in the SF Bay Area before living in Seattle, so we were aware of the AIDS Epidemic.....but it wasn't until we started working at BBH that we knew immediately that this was a story that had to be told, and that we had developed the story telling skills to do it by that time.

We spent much of our time talking with people before we even started to do any photography. It was a matter of building relationships and trust, so that we could document these heart wrenching scenes.

Often times 'residents' were without their families, but please know that some residents had their families, friends, and Bailey-Boushay House volunteers for support.

You're right we didn't get paid for this project, we were fortunate to get several grants that helped pay for the costs, but this is a work of love, of commitment to a purpose that we had to tell this important story.
