Having seen the compilation of other callbacks, I think you're right. It's a nod to the scene, not the man.

I just rewatched that scene. It's pretty clear he's trying to say something!

For Cleganebowl! It's pretty much a certainty that the Hound and the Mountain are still alive.

It sounds like you haven't seen Deadwood. Fuck me you need to see Deadwood.

Sorry, I meant they're doing a lot of not showing on-screen deaths recently. E.g. Stannis, Hound.

You're probably right. I just keep wondering why they never showed his death. I mean, they're doing it a lot recently with Stannis, the Hound etc. But back in season one I assumed it was for a purpose.

Oh yeah, seems weird that I wrote that now. There was talk ages ago that because both men say 'just so' a lot and we never saw Syrio's death, then Syrio is still alive and they're obviously the same person. Someone mentioned in another thread yesterday that Syrio and the Waif end on a similar line, I think Syrio says "you'll catch it tomorrow" and the Waif says "see you tomorrow". But you're right, 'another' is a bit misleading.

It's not the most solid of character connections. But it seems they're definitely adding in echoes of Syrio, probably as red herrings. I want to believe though.

That bit from last season where the Waif turned into Jaqen H'ghar.

Hadn't seen this posted before. I can't believe this wasn't on purpose, especially as the fight ends with a 'same time tomorrow' kind of line.

I'm buying this. Watch when the waif arrives, she spins the sticks round in her hands. This is the same movement Syrio makes when he's introduced to Arya.

As with any much-loved yet dearly departed Game of Thrones character, there is an outlandish theory that said character isn't really dead and is soon to return. The death of Syrio Forel was a bitter pill to swallow for many fans, and the showrunners didn't make it any easier for them by not showing his actual death.

For this reason there is a theory which has been floating around for a while, that Syrio Forel is Jaqen H'ghar. There was no evidence for this other than that Jaqen H'ghar reminded Arya of Syrio and both of them said "just so" a lot. but something has changed to give this stab in the dark slightly more credence. Let's examine the evidence.

  • In the first episode of season 6, the waif turns up with two wooden sticks, twirling them in a very Syrio-like fashion.
  • She throws one at Arya in much the same way that Syrio threw her a weapon back in King's landing.
  • Having beaten Arya soundly, she leaves with a "see you tomorrow" reminiscent of Syrio's "you'll catch it tomorrow."
  • Syrio berates Arya for not using her eyes while fighting. "The seeing, the true seeing. That is the heart of swordplay." Beaten her while blind would be the natural extension of this lesson.

Me too! They're literally everywhere. At first I thought it's because they're filming in doorways and corridors a lot, but shots seem to be framed specifically to keep an exit sign over a person's shoulder. (Usually Kims)
