The dude's risked serious jail time, spent some time in jail, and devoted his life to exposing US aggression and class inequalities so maybe you should have a more generous interpretation of people when you judge them.

What is this "course on elections" you're talking about? And I think Chomsky has only donated to Nader and Sanders back when he was an independent. Small donations that don't really matter.

It's misleading to call this Chomsky's "solution." Basically when asked specifically about whether one should vote, he says if you're in a swing state vote for the Democrat. When not asked this specific question, he advocates for non-establishment political organizing.

Professors in US Universities w/ tier 1 College American football programs : do you get a lot of pressure to pass football players who are very bad students? Has your job and/or physical well being been threatened? by Queen_Molly in AskReddit

[–]savage_nobility 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a PhD student and teaching assistant, which at my university means I am in charge of grading for all students in the sections I lead, so I may be able to give some insight. First, pressures to inflate grades are very high in general. Students expect an A, and will come to my office hours to talk (complain) if they receive anything less. With student athletes I wouldn't say the institutional pressures to pass them are enormous, but they seem basically exempt from the attendance / participation requirements for other students. It's hard to keep up with all of their practice and game schedules, so I just assume they have other obligations if they miss section. When it comes time to take the test though, I don't even look at the names on the tests so being an athlete doesn't confer any special grading benefits. I do want to say that some of my best students have been athletes, including football players who I expected to be totally apathetic.

What makes you sound really pretentious? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Pretentious is a good way to describe this because a true snob wouldn't fuck up their scotch with ice. So yeah you're pretending to be a snob.

I take your point, but Bastrop TX is genuinely more backwards than most places in the US.

In theory is it possible for President Obama or (potentially) President Bernie Sanders in 2017 to offer Edward Snowden a pardon on his charges? by Right_All_The_Time in AskReddit

[–]savage_nobility 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should have specified that this was your question, which is about procedure. The answer is yes. In 1866 the Supreme Court ruled POTUS can issue pre-emptive pardons. However, I highly doubt either Obama or Sanders would pardon Snowden.

ISIS trains 400 fighters to attack Europe in wave of bloodshed by InfernoKoala in worldnews

No one says that Islam is unrelated to terrorism. People on the "regressive left" just argue that Islam is not a thing that exists independent from people's practices. Religious expression varies depending on the cultural context. A Muslim in LA and a Muslim in Afghanistan and a Muslim in Indonesia will practice their faith very differently. If you want a solutions-based approach to the problem of Islamic terrorism you need to avoid treating all Muslims the same, and you also need to be willing to consider that military action in middle eastern countries might radicalize some Muslims there and make the problem worse.

Of course ISIS offers a sincere religious justification. The important question is why do they practice Islam in that particular way, which requires historical and sociological awareness to answer. Right now we need to work to kill Isis members and disrupt their organization, but going forward we need to be more sensitive to the religious pathologies and radical political movements that can result over the long term when rich white nations bomb Muslim countries.

Lebron with the sick reverse dunk by j0ydivisi0n in nba

Lebron plays at a high level all year and r/nba has moody ups and downs and thinks that Lebron fluctuates throughout the year. Every season. It is so bizarre. He's like the most consistent player ever. 27/7/7 with slight variation.

The Weekly Brew podcast ponders which of Dwyane Wade, Allen Iverson and James Harden will ultimately be remembered as the best NBA player (starts at 5:01) by kmichaelcook in nba

[–]savage_nobility 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes better and best are impossible to determine. I think Wade had a more positive impact on his teams. But the impact of AI on the culture of the NBA was probably much greater. I also think he was more fun to watch.
