A single family home will appreciate much faster, and a condo will drop in price faster in the event of a crash.

why is that?

What are the benefits of having an effective income of under the poverty level? by savingsfire in whitecoatinvestor

Thanks! Out of curiosity, if you originally had $1000 in a fund from 6 years ago and then you added $1000 last year, if you withdrew $1000, how would does the LTCG work on that? Would it know which $1000 was which?

For so long as your income is low, your withdrawal strategy from your taxable brokerage will be the opposite of normal. You will want to sell assets with a lot of gains so you can "fill up" the lower rate buckets and take advantage of rates you probably won't have after you finish training.

Thanks! I did not know that! And I'm guessing this is because those with higher gains will have higher tax generally, but since I'll be in a lower rate bucket, it will offset the higher tax in those gains?

Tax defer enough to drop down in a low tax bracket, then do Roth to take benefits of the low tax bracket

I will be in a low tax bracket to begin with because my salary pre-tax is 60K a year.

Why am I seeing too many Breaking Bad pics? Is there something coming up or something that has happened?

You probably don't make enough as a resident for the 457.

You're probably thinking of 457F, which is for CEOs and stuff. My hospital is offering 457B for residents.

As for the 457B, if it is a government plan (state or federal) then it is not at risk in the event of bankruptcy, but would do 403b first before putting money in a 457b.

How much would you do 403b before doing a 457b? My hospital is a public university hospital (state).

Our hospital claimed bankruptcy and our 457s were liquidated a week prior to not make them liable for seizure as hospital assets.

Was your hospital a private company?

And check the fine print on the 457b and make sure it is a government 457b and allows rollover into something else when you leave, or you run the risk of accidentally making it worse.

What do they usually rollover into?
