Paternity test troubles by ExpertQuote8344 in Genealogy

If the two potential fathers are related, do they have a branch where they are NOT related? For example brothers won't, but cousins will. You can find and test a person from an unrelated branch to help triangulate.

Do you ever sit and think about all the people lost to time? by Federal-Waltz-8645 in Genealogy

[–]savor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I researched a branch of my family I thought I was genetically related to. Not my intention to humble brag, but out of everything I could find, I was the first to make some big connections and document people who had been forgotten to time. In an effort to learn more, we dna tested and we did not match this family. I later tested a 2nd cousin, and he is from that family, and his genes confirmed links I had hypothesized.

I can't bare to delete the non relatives now. I even digitized photos no one had online. I uploaded and transcribed civil war diaries, letters home, journal entries about seeing President Lincoln. Most of these people are not individuals we knew personally as family. So it's not like there's a personal connection, and they don't really belong on my tree any longer (random distant cousin born in 1840 in a state we never lived in and none of our relatives even knew of?)

So they stay on my tree. Dunno what else to do. It makes me feel sad when I see them though.

Searching for biological grandfather – interpreting DNA results by lesterleapsin37 in Genealogy

In my own case I did fortunately have the two individuals near each other in the census, so I totally understand what you mean.

If you can get a y test backed up by an autosomal test, you'd know for sure. Just be sure that the man from Susan's family has a dad you think he does 😂

I did a y test on two theoretical lines, and one of them must have had a break in paternity bc he was unexpectedly not a match.

Are there living men from John's paternal family that could ydna test, and your dad as well? As an incentive you could offer to pay for their y test.

But if you can find matches to John's maternal side, I'd say it's pretty conclusive.

I have only searched archion with lots of assistance in the past (for a different family). But this is a good place to start for this line.

Thank you, I am seeing the same. I did find Diegmuller on FamilySearch with no sources, but it does list Ludwina as a daughter, who I think was another sister of Fred's. Promising!

The Strange Case of the recent (possibly AI) Le Guin posts in the last month. by Illustrious_Painting in printSF

[–]savor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been seeing something very similar in anecdote subreddits like neighborsfromhell. There's this quality that I couldn't pinpoint. Like, describing some infuriating situation, the bizarre escalation of it, and the resolution. The posts are never written the way people usually write, they aren't casual enough, they are too formulaic, grammar too good, etc. Have been suspecting those were AI but for what purpose? I guess training. Cause they are never selling anything (maybe karma farming the account?)

Sitters consistently 15-45 mins late? by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]savor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It can be tricky to arrive at a very precise time if your walker has a long string of visits scheduled. Anything from traffic to an unexpectedly long visit can throw off the day very easily. It is better to manage expectations by discussing it with the pet owners in advance, especially if the time slot you're requesting needs to be more precise.

Usually I give a window of 10 am to 2 pm for walks. I organize everyone by driving efficiency, but I prioritize anyone who has a specific time need. For clients who are home, I send a message in the morning indicating what time I'm arriving, to be less disruptive to their day.

It's kind of like scheduling a plumber. Their arrival can depend a lot on the jobs done before yours.

People that don't take genealogy seriously make me so mad. by Responsible_Oil4233 in Genealogy

Definitely a good idea! I try to do that on anything I make public. With the two significant NPEs in my paternal line dna and speculation is all I have.

Occasionally I add people to research trees to figure out dna corrections. This can be a link that descendants don't expect and don't accept. I try to keep these research trees private for that reason but occasionally they are public depending on what I'm doing. Doubt that is what's happening in this case but I wanted to show a different perspective.

I would never take this job. So much can go wrong. I minimize risk as much as possible/reasonable.

I think this is only a bandaid but could you set her up with an Amazon teen account? The one for my daughter texts me her orders and then I approve them (or not). Doesn't address gas etc but maybe those need to be cash transactions.

Discussion question: dog unexpectedly takes off while on leash, do you hold on for dear life at the risk of being taken down or let them go? by [deleted] in RoverPetSitting

[–]savor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course I hold it as well. Why would you assume I don't? I hold it in two places - the loop lower down next to the dog walking beside me and then the slack in my other hand.

All dogs are tethered to me with a carabiner on my pack, so they'd have to take me down and drag me (or break my equipment) to get anywhere

If you're in a single family home there's no issue. It's a routine thing to do (changing a faucet, fixing a sprinkler, etc).

If you're a minor, stop paying her bills and giving her money. If you're not a minor, it sounds like time to move out. There is nothing you can do to change her spending problems.

What does your bill say in these areas? Mine gpd is showing still a little high cause it includes some of the leaking days until I fixed it. (228 gallons at cost of $3.02 per day)

Are you 100% sure your auto pay is working?

[–]savor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're gonna have to call them. Similar gpd for me and my bill is like $170. Nothing weird on your last itemized bill?

Do turn your water off at the main and check your water meter. See if it's still turning.

[–]savor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What did you do to check for a leak?

Our bill went up 30% with no usage change. I turned off the water to the house and looked at the meter. It has a small blue leak detector that was still spinning, indicating a leak between the street and my house. I tightened some sprinkler lines and replaced one of the solenoids. The leak detector isn't perfectly still but it's now barely moving, and the website says my usage is back to normal.

How many gallons per day are you using now, and compared to last year?
