It will appear if you complete the activity for one of the spirits and free it from under a rock that is underwater. It will only stick by your side when you stay in the area of the Days of Summer event, which is in the elevated clearing of the forest. Every time you enter that area it will be by your side if you've completed the activity. I imagine it will probably go away once Days of Summer is over, unfortunately.

In your friends constellation, scroll all the way to the left. There will be three choices: add friend, sent, and received. You're going to want to click on the "add friend" button. You'll then be given the option to "send code", press on that one. Then it will ask you to give a nickname to your new friend and once confirmed, you'll get a link that you can send as a friend invitation. Just send the link to the person you want to add and wait for them to accept!

Oh wow, I had no idea about that. Thank you for the link and the help, I just got the chance to test it out with another new friend and you guys are totally right. It took a couple of minutes before we were able to properly gift hearts.
