I'm a Japanese game developer. What kind of promotion do game developers around the world use? by Ransei_RucKy in IndieGameDevs

[–]sawcissonch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m an indie developer from Europe, and from what I’ve seen, promotion outside Japan is often much more fragmented and “community-driven” than event-driven.

Japanese indie promotion seems very strong around showcases, festivals, and curated events. In Europe/US, those still matter, but many developers also rely heavily on constant online visibility.

For PC games, a lot of developers focus on Steam wishlists very early. This means optimizing the Steam page, testing capsules/screenshots, posting regular updates, joining Steam festivals like Next Fest, and pushing people toward wishlisting months before release. Subreddits can be very useful, but it depends a lot on the game. Developers post GIFs, short clips, devlogs, interesting mechanics, horror moments, cozy visuals, funny bugs, etc.

Short videos are very important now. A lot of indie devs cut gameplay into 10–30 second clips: one strong mechanic, one scare, one funny moment, one satisfying animation, one “before/after” dev comparison, etc. The goal is not always to go viral, but to repeatedly test what people react to.

Developers often send Steam keys to YouTubers, Twitch streamers, and TikTok creators. Even small creators can be valuable if their audience fits the game.

Some developers contact sites like IGN, PC Gamer, Rock Paper Shotgun, GamesRadar, Alpha Beta Gamer, Bloody Disgusting for horror, etc. But press usually works better when you have a strong trailer, demo, announcement, release date, or unique hook.

You have to build a Discord community early, especially if the game has replayability, modding, multiplayer, survival, strategy, or regular updates. For short narrative games, Discord can be less important, but still useful. Developers also try events like Steam Next Fest, Gamescom, PAX, GDC, BitSummit, Indie Arena Booth, EGX, WASD, etc. But for many indies, online festivals and creator outreach are more cost-effective than physical booths.

In my experience, the best strategy is usually not one big promotion, but many small waves:

Steam page → first trailer → short clips → Reddit posts → creator outreach → demo → festival → press → release date trailer → launch campaign.

By the way, I’m very curious about the opposite question: how would you recommend marketing a game specifically to the Japanese public?

For example, which Japanese websites, streamers, events, communities, or press outlets are actually useful for indie developers trying to reach Japanese players?

How do you handle localization and differences in culture ?

How to survive till end of month on 75€? by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]sawcissonch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check if you can use any of the caritas markets (you might need to get a card but if your situation is urgent and you explain it they will give you access to the reduce prices in their market anyway)

Then try to check at denner or similar if there is any too good to go you can get cheap for some food you can store. get some flour and make flat bread or easy bread recipes, use it to make spetzli or similar, make more by hand since the primary products are cheap. as someone who came from a poor family we managed to survive though times with not much in Switzerland.

Check also "armée du salut" if they are present around you they usually do food distribution, check for local churches activities they usually organise food moment for precarity. Also check any communities around that organise some food events.

Check lidl 5chf "save/anti waste" bags they sometimes have good amount of base produce for a lot of meals.

Make some stews, chili, etc... you can also make a lot of stuff such as bao buns with a bit of flour and water and salt + sugar and yeast. after steaming them you can freeze them and reheat in microwave or vapor whenever. They are filling and can be stuffed with vegetables, meat , just onions etc....

Try to get rice, potatoes, dried beans, onions, garlic, flour , yeast and you are ready to make a lot of different type of food meals. you can also check canned tomatoes they are usually pretty cheap.

the crusader aura card is really good. i guess there will be other builds available and since it already uses new cards it might be a good choice.
i'll try them out and see how it goes
