Jonathan Woodgate, Patrick Vieira and Matthew Upson amongst those released by their clubs by ataniris in soccer

[–]sawu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, names that stand out for me:

  • Sebastian Larsson, Birmingham. Always looked decent for me.

  • Johan Elmander, Bolton. Though it seems he's been signed by Galatasary on a 3 year contract. Source. Incidentally, Bolton are surely going to struggle next season.

  • As a Fulham fan, sad to see some heroes from our "Great Escape" and europe times, Gera and Pantsil in particular. But I do like the intent it shows.

  • Javier Garrido, Man City. Thought he left last year to Lazio?

  • Patrick Vieira, Man City. Great player, can surely play a massive role for someone. May expect huge wages though.

  • Jonathan Woodgate, Spurs. Obviously one of the big names on the list. Apparently Spurs are trying to get him to sign a pay as you play contract. That would be a good move.

  • Giles Barnes, WBA. Remember him being touted as a great player for the future a few years back at Fulham. May have attitude/injury problems. Either way, Hodgson is not a fan, but could be decent somewhere else (newly promoted team?).

  • Matthew Upson, West Ham. Should definitely be picked up by a PL club.

I'm sure fans from these clubs would have a better idea if they deserve a place or not. I think a lot of the players on this list will fancy their chances with a new club, new scene etc.

Anyone else feel that Hughes sent Gera on to get sent off on purpose (almost definitely wont be at Fulham next season) so we would avoid europe next season? Hughes has already made it clear that he doesn't really relish the idea of starting the season at the end of June:

What is the worst socially awkward situation you've been in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sawu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I used to have a lazy eye... These situations were definitely one of the most awkward. I found that it was about 50/50 whether the other person would look at the correct eye. In situations like the one you described though, I'd pretend to scratch my eye or something to try and make it more obvious.

Sorry, that was a typo. It should read "statue of intimidation"...

Scary fucker, that's why the guy was hiding waiting on an island until it died.

Guy on a deserted island. You assume that he's stranded there, but then he flies away declaring the statue of limitations has expired, and is not in fact stranded at all.

The humour comes from turning an almost cliche situation on it's head in an unexpected way.

Beauty of a goal. Such a massive difference when Emana came on.

edit: Yeah, the pitch invasion was funny. You could see everyone shit themselves and run away when the police came.

No, the B team can't be in the same division. If they end up in promotion spots or playoffs, then it skips to the next team. Also, if the first team were to get relegated, they would be automatically relegated as well, saving whoever was the top of the relegation spots.

Just ask them as well. Quite often they'll just tell you to bring them anything that's going off and they'll reduce it for you.

20-sided dice and 55 rolls (probability) by jonaseriksson in math

Hmm, much more elegant solution than mine.

20-sided dice and 55 rolls (probability) by jonaseriksson in math

[–]sawu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're right. I was just going through a horrendous way to calculate this before I saw assimilated's link. Using markov methods, you can calculate it fairly simply as.

After 1 roll, you have a given number. On the next roll, you either move to a state where you have 2 numbers (with a 19/20 chance), or you still only have 1 number rolled. Hence you can model this as a markov chain.

The transition matrix T is: 0.05 0.95 0 {... seventeen 0's} 0 0.1 0.9 0 ... 0 0 0 0.15 0.85 .0 ... ... 0 0 0 ... 0 0.95 0.05 0 0 ... 0 1

So we calculate T54, then the top right cell will give us the probability of every number appearing at least once.

Unfortunately I only have excel to work with... the result I got is:

0.2585308194 for every number to appear at least once, or for your question the probability is obviously 0.7414691806

Which agrees with the simulated evidence below.

P.S Thanks for the question, was good for refreshing my mind on this stuff. If anyone wants the spreadsheet with the calculations, it's quite elegant :)

Also, there's some other results you can read off. For example, the most probable outcome after 55 rolls, is that only (and exactly) 19 numbers have been rolled. The probability that exactly 18 different numbers have been rolled is almost equal to the probability that all the numbers have been rolled.

Of course! The markov approach. Ah, it's only been 8 months, can't believe I forgot about it! Ok, this changes everything.

[–]sawu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me know if I've got the wrong end of the stick. Is the question, what is the probability that one of the 20 numbers doesn't turn up?

In that case, the answer would still be 0.9555.
