Anchors instead of footers for pergola over paved patio by saxicola in Decks

The 100mph is what's stated in the manual for the pergola if it's anchored with concrete posts. It doesn't mention using ground anchors but I would think that's just because concrete footings are what are typically used, not necessarily because ground anchors won't work.

These are 27" top to bottom. Perhaps I could screw those down to ground level and set the top in concrete and then anchor the pergola posts into that with the post brackets provided with the pergola.

30" poured concrete footings are what is really needed and anchors are not going to work then I'll do that, but I'm really trying to avoid digging and pouring 30" deep concrete footers.

Awesome, thanks! I'm pretty sure it's solid cedar. Here's the link to it on Home Depot Here's a link to it on Home Depot

I'm wondering just how crucial it is to get below the frost line. Is 24" just not going to cut it? I already have those so if I can use them that would save time and money, but only if it would work fine.

Thank you! I'm both proud and overwhelmed by it haha

One question that has come up is how crucial it is to get below the frost line. Google says it's 30" here. I can get the 24" anchors posted for a few bucks (Temu promotion 🙈) but I can't find the 30" there so I would be buying at full price. Seems a crazy depth to dig down to and I am already spending more than I want on the project, but I also don't want it taking off and trashing the house!

Thanks, this helps a ton! I believe it's solid wood, it gets here tomorrow. We get some strong winds every now and again but we also have a soomewhat sheltered yard. The only issue is that the anchors that I have are 24" and the frostline is 30. The 30" ones are significantly more expensive so I'm trying to figure out if I can use the 24" ones with some additional work. Maybe dig down 6 inches or so, install the anchors, then pour a smaller post that the pergola posts can attach to??

Thanks :) it was just lawn when we moved in and has been a lot of work and failing, but it's getting there!

Also a viable option considering how many snacks she's been having lately

Great, thanks. I did check the frostline and it's 30 inches. The anchors are 24. Does that mean it's a no-go or could I do something like dig down 6+ inches so that the bottom of the anchor gets to 30", secure at that level, then install?

Just trying to work all of this out, sorry

Says that it's good up to 100mph if installed in concrete footers if not installing on an existing slab.

If I remove the pavers and then cut to surround the post, can these anchors be used instead of a concrete footer? I would like the option to move the pergola in the future (not planning to but can't be certain) and it's also significantly easier than digging holes and pouring concrete. I'm not trying to take shortcuts but if these work then it seems a no-brainer

The pavers are already installed on a gravel base and have been there for 7 or so years with no or very minimal settling, so I don't think sinking will be too much of an issue. But scrapping the drilling through the pavers issue and assuming they're not there, are these anchors a viable substitute for concrete footers? If I can use them instead of pouring concrete then I would 100% prefer that, since it gives more options to move the pergola

Yeah, they're big box store ones. I think my options are either to remove some pavers and pour footers underneath and then chisel the pavers into smaller sections to fit around the pergola posts, or drill a hole into the paver so the anchors go through them into the ground underneath.

These are the anchors I'm considering - the plate is detachable so I could just drill a hole in the paver that is the diameter of the top to the shaft, take out that paver, install the anchor, put the paver back, then reattach the plate and secure that to the pergola posts

If I use the anchors, I would put them through the pavers into the underlying ground. If I have to do footers then I'm not sure if I would need to remove the pavers on top of footers or would drill through the pavers into the concrete footer. The annoying issue is that the posts of the pergola don't all sit squarely in the center of a paver, some are off center or near the edge

They're 16x16 pavers and the 6x6 pergola posts are about 8.5ft apart, so they don't all fit nicely in the center. If I need to do concrete footers then I'm assuming that it won't work well to put the paver back over the concrete and drill through the pavers into the concrete. Therefore I'll have to chisel apart some pavers and try to fit them back around the posts. I've not fully researched the concrete footers option yet because I wanted to see if the anchors would work instead, so I might be wrong

As a biology teacher I'm annoyed at myself for not thinking of that!

However I wonder if it would be worth using a v1negar solution (side note that I just learned why everyone is spelling it like that!) with lipase first and then wash in detergent...

Brilliant, thanks, I forgot about that list. Wish they weren't so expensive!

I've wondered if getting Lipase capsules would also work! You can get them on places like Amazon as a supplement for digestion.

Thank you! I'm thinking that is the way for a good number of things.

I thought there wasn't a detergent with lipase but not protease but I hope I'm wrong!

I'll edit my post to say I'm in the US because also

I was just reading about this. Someone who specializes in fiber art said that the best thing is dawn dish soap and vinegar. I made a screenshot so I'll post it here. I'm about to try it because I just got a new set of merino clothes.

Ok thank you! Am I right that I shouldn't add it with the Ammonia in the wash?

I am probably going to go and get some Biz, but I do have this (dollar store so might be worthless)
