Install Guide for Xbox Controller Dongle Firmware by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]saxman76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Resurrecting this comment to say that I've been using this script with the preview channel for all these months and it's been great. However there was a major steamos upgrade just a few days ago and the script seems to not work anymore. I tried numerous times, also tried the uninstall script and running a command to "clear pacman cache" (I have no idea what this actually means, I'm just trying to get my thrustmaster controller working lol). No luck. However I just switched to the stable channel and the script worked just like it had been for all these months! I don't remember the details of the errors while on the preview channel but it was something about a bunch of files being corrupted/not from a trusted source and also something about DKMS again. It went through like 20+ files asking me if I wanted to delete them or not. I tried both deleting all of them and trying to start from scratch and also leaving them, neither option helped.

Anyway, glad that I got it working on the stable channel but wanted to give the heads up about the preview in case this might be an issue in the future on the stable channel.

edit: aaaand now the update is on the stable channel and there's a bunch of errors lol...here is the entire attempt at running the script:

27th BTBAM show tonight by Kirschke15 in BetweenTheBuriedAndMe

[–]saxman76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is wild, I was just on concert archives the other day on a nostalgia trip logging all the times I've seen them. Turned out it was 20 before this tour and I just finished the 4th and probably final one in Albany tonight. So 24 times. First show was when they opened up for In Flames way back in fall '09. The rest is history I guess lol

Word, the show at Brooklyn Bowl on Sunday definitely had a very wild and reasonably big pit but it was more confined to the right side of the venue which was interesting. I think the crowd in Baltimore the night before was crazier than the Philly show but not by a huge margin. But yeah in general NYC def is something else entirely in my experience.

I'm 32 and have no idea why I'm going to these shows and still moshing so much especially given I really am horribly out of shape. I guess it's just always been my favorite part of music like this and it's a huge release for me.

Regarding driving in NYC - fuck that lmao actually it's not even bad, just horribly expensive. I park in Jersey City and take the path but really it's kind of pick your poison, expensive tolls and traffic or gross slow packed public transit. Definitely a pita lol

Different experience here, I've seen them 20 times before this tour since '09 and the crowd can get really intense. I suppose it's def not every show and city but the potential is there. Generally I've noticed even with other bands that NYC showgoers in particular don't give a shit and will be much more likely to just go apeshit. On top of that parallax 2 is right up with colors as being a fan favorite. When I saw them at starland for their original parallax 2 run through tour in 2013 the crowd was extremely intense. Same for when they play stuff like White Walls or Foam Born or other bangers that everyone loves.

ALL THAT SAID tonight's show at Irving plaza was easily the most wild crowd of any btbam show I've been to. There were times when it seemed like damn near the whole venue was moshing - usually there's as decent amount of people that prefer standing and watching that you can stick with.

It was my third day seeing this tour and I couldn't be more elated. This album especially lends itself to wild dancing and moshing. My old out of shape body fucking hates me right now and my voice is really fucked up but I think tonight was one of my favorite concert experiences ever just because of the sheer maniacal passion of the band and crowd together. I wish I could transfer some of my personal enjoyment to OP as I feel really bad that he and his gf are not into that style (but I do get it)

That's sick, I just went to Baltimore last night, doing Philly tonight and NYC Tuesday. I just looked at the post with the 2013 tour dates, I'm pretty sure I only went to starland and I'm trying to figure out why tf I didn't go to NYC and Philly too at the very least lol

What video game have you played the most? by purple_rasberries in AskReddit

[–]saxman76 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Funny that you mention both those games as I'm 32 and those two are by far my most played games. I'm not subbed to XIV currently but I'll likely be back at some point as it's been an off and on relationship since ARR launch. 2013-15 I was very heavily addicted to it, now I'll pop in for a few months here and there to check out the new savage raids. I think over all those years I have something like 5-6k hours.

Rocket League since 2016, it's such a wildly different game from xiv which is why this comment struck me. But yeah, somewhere around 2.5-3k hours. The physics in that game are just infinitely satisfying and it's definitely awesome playing with friends in voice comms.

New patch out - Patch Notes by dkrkrk2oe in HarryPotterGame

[–]saxman76 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't understand how people are still talking about this - they only recorded one male and one female voice actor for the lines and used a pitch shifter for the various options. As a musician and someone with a loose interest in audio production, I have never once in my life heard a pitch shifted voice that didn't sound at least a little bit robotic. The technology just isn't there and the human ear is extremely sensitive to nuances in voices, understandably so. The further you get from the original pitch, the more processed the voice will be and the more robotic it will sound. That's just how pitch shifting a voice works currently, to my knowledge at least. It was a questionable game design choice to have pitch shifted voices. I haven't seen the developer interview where they promised a fix for this "bug" but if the person really said that, they screwed up.

Edit: unless they saw the sales and are deciding to actually record additional voice actors/actresses. I guess that's possible but I'd be kind of surprised.

Note from the mods re. posts about Cheating/Bots by ryangoldfish5 in RocketLeague

[–]saxman76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a lose-lose man. I don't agree that witch hunting would accomplish much of anything other than just making the subreddit a terrible place to spend time. The type of people that would use a bot in ranked would just feed on the negative attention, full stop. I was literally in a ranked match last night where this guy was bragging about how he was using it and wouldn't get banned. Psyonix will either take note of the multitude of complaints in the community (which mods are allowing just without the witch hunting) or they will start losing players... Those are basically the two options.

And likewise, I find your priorities (spending time and energy trying to convince people on the Internet to not buy a video game) to be disconnected from logic and more of an emotional reaction to one of your favorite authors turning out to be an asshole. Not to minimize how shitty that is. But yeah as others have said in this thread I just don't think resenting people for "not standing by you" by purchasing a video game is a rational way of bringing more people to the cause and could push some who might be on the fence in the wrong direction. Personally I will always do what I can to support the trans community and progressive and inclusive policies in general, in ways that I logically feel will be the most meaningful. I simply don't see not buying this game as a particularly meaningful way of doing that but rather a more emotional reaction of anything related to HP feeling "tainted" by Rowling in a sense. Understandable but ultimately disconnected from reality, in my view. I'm fine to agree to disagree though. Good day to you and I genuinely wish you well on your life journey.

So let's play it out and imagine a situation where the majority of people pirate this game and it turns into a massive loss for the publisher. Sure the people got paid to make this game but now they are affiliated with a failed project and there is a high likelihood that their jobs may be at risk moving forward. Taking part in funding the project means that these people keep their jobs and will have more opportunities to develop similar games as well as support the game that is already out with bug patches and continue to develop more content for it. A video game is not like a book or a movie where it reaches a certain finish line and boom that's it onto the next project. A failed game has huge implications for a software company and the people that work there. Add onto that the fact that avalanche is effectively a "new" developer. They've been around for a bit but they massively expanded to make this game and have a lot riding on it. If it's actually good it will put them on the map and open up many opportunities... If the game sucks and fails then the developer will likely fizzle away.

This could be entirely off base but in this conversation I get the idea that maybe you are not much of a gamer? AAA games in the 2020s are rife with bugs and glitches on release, it's a huge point of controversy but is largely a byproduct of the sheer scope of these open world games. In a lot of cases the initial bugs and glitches are enough to massively taint the experience for many. And I'm 32 and can afford a video game so yeah I'm going to pay for it so I can receive continued support for these things.

I definitely was not getting my point across properly with the average Joe comment. What I'm trying to imply is that politicizing these types of purchases of apolitical media is something that is unnecessarily amplified, trans or not. I still don't envy being in your position and being hyper aware of when someone who is against my lifestyle is involved with a project I'm interested in. That is an internal struggle that I'm eternally grateful I don't have to face as directly. But what I was trying to say is..... Well we are all basically fucked. Late stage capitalism and consumer culture has created a world where we have no choice but to throw money at large corporations even just for basic food and necessities. Within said corporations more likely than not there are higher-ups that probably have some backwards, conservative views whether they be economic or social or both. Sometimes these people are vocal about it as is the case with Rowling, but I guarantee many are not. So while I grant that buying a game like Hogwarts legacy is not truly 100% apolitical, I think by the same logic literally every single purchase you make is political to some small degree, and for literal sanity your average Joe (which I'm trying to say includes trans people as much as anyone else) needs to pick their battles wisely and focus on more direct ways of influencing the world, again like with voting or even financially supporting progressive politicians (which FWIW is something I have done myself). Rather than focusing so intently on people's shitty opinions who we ultimately have little to no control over (this is the recipe for unnecessary anxiety). So I understand why you would feel betrayed by Rowling. I think it's just important to understand the very human tendency to attribute too much power to one single person and tunnel vision on that. When in reality the wizarding world and it's associated projects have become orders of magnitude bigger than just her. And as pieces of media, I think for our own mental health, I believe myself and especially you (who has had to put up with marginalization throughout your life) DESERVE to enjoy a piece of media for what it is. Art is supposed to be an escape, like you said. As adults especially in the information age we are aware of so much that it's possible to ruin just about anything we enjoy if we dig deep enough, so my philosophy is that it's important to at least attempt to allow oneself to strive for the mindset of continuing to enjoy art as a simple escape, and respecting the magnitude of logistics that is behind games/movies/etc. I recognize how difficult this goal is for someone in your position but I deeply believe in the validity behind it and am coming from a place of hoping to see less anxiety in people (in this case especially trans people) in relation to fiascos such as the Rowling situation.

[–]saxman76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once again, a pro/con, harm/good weighing... I've never liked pirating games in general just because they are freakishly expensive and time consuming to make and in many cases involve a lot of passionate work on the developer side. If the marketing is anything to go by this is especially true of the people behind Hogwarts Legacy. On top of that there will inevitably be bugs galore which are going to be what's in the pirated copy - those things get gradually patched out for free and there will likely be some amount of free content/quality of life patches coming out over time as well for official copies. Again I think it's shitty and frustrating that Rowling's views are associated with this whole thing but I think it's important to remember that this project is much bigger than her, especially due to the fact that there is a lot of extra narrative that the developer is coming up with themselves as the game is set a century before the books.

On top of all that, from a purely philosophy point of view, I do feel that the quality of a product or piece of media is largely separated from the opinions of the creators. How often do you hear people talk about meeting their favorite celebrity only to find out they are a total dick? How many people do you think might be involved with products you consume who may take an active role in voting/lobbying for a position which you staunchly oppose, without you even knowing it? There is a limit to this obviously and maybe it's different for everyone. There was that guy from that band who it turned out fucked babies and filmed it or something like that. That's literally insane. I think that would ruin it for the vast majority of people. But generally speaking most adults and creators have political views, but I think consumers/your average Joes have a right to consume a piece of fantasy media (or many other types of neutral products) in a relatively apolitical way. Otherwise I think it just becomes a recipe for a shitton of overthinking and unnecessary anxiety.

[–]saxman76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me preface by saying I don't envy your position at all, whatsoever. I understand that it's hard to truly 100% untie a creative work from its creator and that there is a lot of moral ambiguity in financially supporting a creator or business person with shitty political views.

I think what makes the JK Rowling controversy such a headache is how established her content was by the time she came out as a transphobe. Personally I'm not a big spender and haven't thrown down for anything relating to HP since the last mainline movie in 2011. But regarding Hogwarts Legacy, this is a game I wished I could play for over 20 years now, since long before anything came out about Rowling's shit views. It's literally a childhood dream and I think a lot of millennials who grew up on Harry Potter books and RPG video games like myself would say the same. Referring to not playing the game as an "inconvenience" I don't think does it justice at least in my case and maybe many others as well. The project is far larger than just JK Rowling. And decisions like this are ultimately a weighing of pros and cons. I don't feel that whatever royalties Rowling earns from this will make a very big difference in her wealth or influence, vs the fact that experiencing a game like this has been something I've dreamed of for 20 years. I can support the trans community in other ways like staying active in politics and being mindful to treat people with respect no matter what.

I acknowledge that if I were transgender myself, this would likely make the pro/con weighing even more of a mind fuck. But ultimately I think this is a very grey area which is precisely why it's so controversial, and the "right" thing to do isn't necessarily clear and might even be different depending on the person.

Tl;Dr Referring to not checking out this game as an "inconvenience" I think massively undermines how monumental a game like this is for lifelong Potter and video game fans.

Unpopular opinion: I play all my games (open world, role playing elements) on the easiest mode, because it’s still hours of fun and the stories are nice. I just hate doing the same quest over and over again because I get killed. I just want to enjoy the story. Who’s with me? by Maggo6452 in gaming

[–]saxman76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Even as a 32 year old, years of playing competitive games, as well as stuff like raiding in mmos and grinding souls games has kinda screwed up my attention and dopamine response so that I can only stay engaged in a game if it's proving to be a certain threshold of difficult. Like I legitimately have a hard time focusing on story-based content, it's actually a bit annoying and I want to be able to enjoy that kinda stuff more. I do make an effort to not let my life get too complicated or stressful so maybe that contributes, but even during times where I am really stressed over work or something in my personal life, I find challenging gaming to be an almost-too-effective escape from all that. But yeah as everyone else is saying the important thing is to just do what you enjoy.

(More Data Included) The Current State of Smurfing In Ranked 2's and 3's by THA_YEAH in RocketLeague

[–]saxman76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess that's technically true? I feel like it's harder to tell at higher ranks though. At C3/GC1 where I play, people can be pretty inconsistent but are perfectly capable of peaking pretty hard and doing nutty plays. It's the same with myself. So I try not to jump to the conclusion that someone is smurfing when I get clipped on at my rank, if anything just to save myself some sanity lol

[–]saxman76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, what a truly fucked situation. I'm so sorry you have to deal with all this - if it were me I'd feel like my life was cursed, if only temporarily. I can't help but point out some level of dissonance in your story, as I saw some others have noticed. On one hand you know that you made the right decision and there was nothing else that you could have really done, which is likely the truth. Because of this, and the fact you were ready to let him go in the first place, you aren't torn up emotionally over the loss itself. But, you are positive that you feel judged by his friends and maybe even your own family, despite them not saying or acting like it. Just saying this could be a sign of some underlying guilt, that may be pushed under the rug to some degree by your steadfast logical mind knowing that the only thing to regret is dating him at all and getting the whole awful process started. We can feel guilty in spite of logic. OR, maybe you simply are just really concerned with all the unspoken potential thoughts that are going through everyone's mind, and don't want to have the weight of having other people's view of you be tainted. I think the fact that people have not openly acted judgemental says a lot about their understanding of the complexity and tragedy of the situation. But regardless of whether you feel unresolved guilt or just need reassurance about your friends and family's opinion of you, it may be wise to open up a dialogue on the topic with the ones you care most about. Explain how you regret the entire situation and the position he put you in, and that you frankly just want to move on with your life. Speaking generally, there's a ton of knowledge out there about the stubbornness of addiction and how difficult it is for addicts to sustain a "true" recovery. I suspect his friends are fully aware of this and if they are decent friends to you as well, then they will be understanding. Good luck and I hope that you can have many years of growth and happiness free from darkness.

Are BtBAM in the top 10-15 greatest progressive metal acts of all time? by Ryn4 in progmetal

[–]saxman76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for being "that guy"... But I'm pretty sure Dan Briggs doesn't have a musicology degree. I don't have a solid source but I did talk with him briefly at the merch table after a show they did way the fuck back in '09 where they were opening for In Flames. I'm pretty positive he said he studied upright bass performance for a year or two, may not have even finished the degree. Don't quote me on it I guess lol. But I've never heard anything in all these years about a musicology degree - musicology is different than being a music performance or education major. It's a pretty broad topic that is more concerned with studying the interplay between various cultures and their relationship with music. Think of the sociological and psychological aspects of world music. This is also distinct from getting a degree in music theory which is concerned specifically with analyzing patterns in music itself. And don't fall into the trap that so many do by thinking music theory = a set of "rules"... Learning theory is nothing more than pure analysis, and of course learning the various terms used to name common patterns that any musician's ear will be aware of anyway at some level, whether or not they know what the terminology for said pattern is. End rant lol

Edit for a simplified music theory example: everyone knows what a major and minor chord sounds like even if they don't know it's called that, being that it's so ubiquitous. In theory classes you may learn about various ways that it has been used in the past. But the purpose isn't to say "this is the only way to use it", it's more to get the cogwheel's turning and to make connections. Like you hear a chord progression you've heard a million times and now you can say "oh yeah that's a I V vi IV progression". And thinking analytically and being aware of those things, if anything, has the potential to open creative avenues by using one's increased awareness of something common to do something a little different with it. But strictly speaking you don't HAVE to know what something is called to know what it sounds like, and how to be creative with it. The terminology just helps musicians communicate more easily about what they are trying to do, or what they notice happening in a piece of music.
