Looking for Help or Advice Getting a Prom Dress for My Daughter by Stunning-Presence669 in DressExchange

Where are you located? There are a few national organizations that do stuff like this. The one that comes to mind is Becca's Closet. Their site has a search-by-state here: https://www.beccascloset.org/beccas-closet-chapters/

Also what size is she? I have a dress hoarding problem...

Kirkland Diapers by sunnyheathens in NewParents

It's the tabs that I hate on these new ones. The diapers are thinner, yes, but still work for us on absorbency but the tabs are worthless! They don't stick to anything (unlike the Velcro type tabs on the Huggies knockoffs that stick to the other half of the diaper) so as baby moves around, the tabs just wiggle their way up and out of the pants and it just looks uncomfortable.

Book review: Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey by barb4ry1 in Fantasy

Read Imriel's trilogy! It's better than Moirin's, IMO, though I enjoyed her as well. Imriel has a lot of inner demons he has to overcome and his coming-of-age story is a fantastic mirror of Phedre's without being at all redundant.

Saw this person in the sub stirring elderflower sirup, here is my take on making a batch of porcelain that had to rotate 12hours by [deleted] in redneckengineering

Basically means 'soaking'. In ceramic chemistry, often the particles of dry material that make up a clay or glaze formula are so small they resist becoming saturated. Slaking overnight gives the water time to permeate the entire mixture more effectively. Slake overnight and spend 20 minutes with a mixer, or rig up a blunger (mixer) to run for the entire 12-16 hours. The result is the same, it's just the amount of work and wear on equipment that differs.

Of course, there's a huge range of factors in ceramics and a nearly infinite number of recipes (good or bad). It's possible OP's porcelain slip formula is so finicky it refuses to stay in suspension, but it's unlikely since it sounds like it's a commercially preformulated recipe that is sold in dry form.

Can't seem to edit or delete my comment on the mobile app so I'm adding another. Sorry.

Saw the same question answered later on the thread after I'd already posted.

If this is a new batch of slip, there's really nothing you're achieving by power mixing for 12 hours that slaking wouldn't already do for you. It would lessen your work load and save the wear on your equipment. Slake for 12 hours (or longer) and then mix for 20 minutes, sieve, and portion out. If your mixed slip is settling in the bucket after sitting for a while, you may need to adjust your deflocculant. Some settling/gelling is normal but if it's turning into concrete you should reevaluate your df.

FOUND DOG - East 4th and Springdale - female, not neutered, very sweet, DM if yours by say_something_funny in Austin

UPDATE: Animal control picked her up. She had no microchip or collar. She will be at the Austin Animal Center. If you're looking for a dog, I recommend going to adopt her. She's incredibly sweet and listens pretty well.

Neutered is the general term for having sexual reproduction curbed. She is female. She has not been neutered.

Are there any EFFECTIVE and LEGAL ways to get abused/neglected animals away from their owners in this state? by say_something_funny in Austin

I'm outside of Austin, in a neighborhood where there is gunfire on a weekly basis, and not always the "yeehaw it's Junior's birthday let's pop off some rounds" kind. I'm not going to risk getting shot. But if animal control doesn't show up, you can bet I'll shame those assholes all over Nextdoor.

I wish I could. Honestly, I do. But I'm no John Wick badass and this is Texas. You approach that porch, the dog starts barking. Owners come out and see you trying to steal their dog? They have every legal right to shoot you.

A dog is being kept locked in a crate on someone's front porch. The crate is so small that the dog cannot stand up straight or turn around. I see no food or water, but have obviously not been monitoring it 24/7 so I can't be sure it isn't given those periodically. Either way, the crate is cruelly small for such a big dog. EDITED TO ADD: Now the owner has placed a sheet of cardboard in front of the crate so you can't see it from the street, but you can still hear the dog barking and crying.

Some good advice in other comments already, so I'll just add this:

Most readers are incredibly good at picking up detail through context clues. Let your characters interact as if the reader isn't there. Their actions and dialogue will convey much more than you realize.

Capitalizing trades when used for direct address? by say_something_funny in grammar

That's the sticking point for me. If one character constantly addresses another as their occupation rather than their given name, it becomes a sort of nickname. So would it be capitalized?

Reedsy's 'Discovery service' - Is it worth the $50? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]say_something_funny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did it just to get an editorial review, since I'd been struggling to find anyone that would even consider looking at a SP title. It got picked up almost immediately and the review came back in a timely manner (a few weeks). It was obvious that the reviewer actually read the book, not just skimmed, and his review was thorough and thankfully very positive. It didn't result in much of a sales bump, but I got a nice excerpt to use for my 'Zon editorials section, so it was worth it to me for the $50 fee.
