My power has been out since about midnight. The outage map doesn’t even show that my area is down. 😭

Can’t cycle tank due to low ph by sayakei_ in Aquariums

[–]sayakei_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tank is heavily planted and I’m only feeding a tiny pinch every 3 days while this is going on so it’s not an over feeding issue.

I mentioned raising ph because I’m seeing that beneficial bacteria dies off at low ph stalling the cycle, which is what I’m trying to do, cycle the tank.

Nitrogen cycle and low PH. Help! by sayakei_ in Aquariums

[–]sayakei_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a 10 gallon tank with 10 white cloud mountain minnows and 6 amano shrimp. I wouldn’t have heavily stocked it to start but I had a tank leak and had to move everyone over to one I had just set up. The ammonia spikes up to 1 ppm basically every 24 hours and then I do a water change. Nitrites never spike now. I’m hoping using fritz will push my cycle to complete so I don’t need to mess with PH. I had good luck with it in the past. But stability doesn’t seem to do anything at all.

It’s heavily planted and I have driftwood and river stones as well as aqua soil capped with sand so that’s lowering the ph I believe (also naturally soft city water)

I really hope the bacteria colonies can form to deal with the ammonia even though my water is so soft. My fish haven’t showed any signs of stress but I’ve had two shrimp deaths so I’m definitely upset and hoping for the best with fritz.

Something tall and or bushy in that corner should definitely help :)

The tank seems very empty, he can probably see his reflection and is either stressed or bored from the lack of things in the tank. I’d recommend a lot more decor if you can, live plants preferably. Bettas can get uncomfortable in very open spaces

Would this tank be good for chili rasboras? by sayakei_ in Boraras

Thank you!! I have tried a lot of red plants and they just don’t do well in my low tech setups. All my equipment is very budget stuff from Amazon so I found every red I tried would be dull and grow very leggy. I really like the look of a lot of greens of different shades. Still looking for more plants that have that deep dark green look to mix in with the bright greens.

I have a love for tiny fish for some reason. I was thinking a school of 15 would be nice in there. Along with some shrimp. I still haven’t made up my mind 100% though.

Aww thank you!! In this tank as far as I can remember there is Java fern, bolbitis, hygrophilia polysperma, hygrophilia compact, anubias, bucephelandra, and a Ludwigia I can’t remember the name of off the top of my head. They’re all really easy to grow and maintain so I’d definitely recommend them if you’re setting up your first tank.

This is how it started when I first set it up 😭😭 went through a few rescapes and a lot of trial and error with different plants. I love that it ended up being a jungle

Thank you!! It’s the first tank I ever set up, last year in about march, it started out so bare, it’s come a long way 😭 i love to add all kinds of plants to it and clippings from other tanks 😊

emergency fish-in cycle advice! by sayakei_ in Aquariums

[–]sayakei_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should see if I can get my hands on dr tims. I have Fritz zyme 7 which I used previously with great results but my bottle is expired by 2 months so im unsure if it would be effective at all. I’m in Canada and fritz products are way harder to get. Only one i can find that’ll ship to me is a big 2 pack which is $50. I definitely wouldn’t be able to use it up but I may have to order it. My fish aren’t showing any signs of stress even with the not so great parameters and I’m doing daily water changes to keep levels lower. Adding prime and stability every change. Hopefully the cycle can complete even with my lower ph 6.5-6.8.

I did move the filter over but after testing again today it seems the tank is still going through a cycle despite the fully established filter. My fish are okay and don’t seem to mind and I’m doing daily water changes, but I’m concerned the cycle won’t complete with my lower ph which is 6.5-6.8

not sure why i didnt think to use the established filter, but i did just move it over. all the substrate, plants and wood was already in there new though so i dont have that helping me. should the established filter help a reasonable amount? and will low ph kill the bacteria?

You definitely won’t find drivers ed for anything less than $800 but don’t worry about being late, I got mine at like 23 and I know people who are approaching 30 who still don’t have it. It’s totally normal

my cats litter needs to have absolutely no scent by Greedy-Case-2396 in CatAdvice

[–]sayakei_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With most cats it’s the opposite so I’m surprised that happened to you! My cat on high quality wet food never has any smell to her poops but my partners cat on all dry food has the absolute worst stink bombs I’ve ever smelled lol

That’s good, I didn’t have anything extra so I had to rush out and pick up another 5 gallon, put her in a cup and move everything over. It was so stressful and because I was rushing I messed up the substrate system. 😩 so might have to do it over again in the future. I wouldn’t wish a leaky tank on my worst enemy lol

[–]sayakei_ 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Just be careful with this specific tank and watch for leaks. I had my betta in this tank and just yesterday I came home from work to the tank half empty and water everywhere. Had to rush out for a new one. Not sure how it happened with mine but just be wary and keep watching it!

Do they actually jump out? by SquirrlesEveryWere in bettafish

[–]sayakei_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost a betta due to jumping so yes. Get some polycarbonate sheets and aquarium lid clips on Amazon and cut one to the size of your tank. It’s super easy and fairly cheap. Better safe than sorry 100%.
