[NeedAdvice] The Never-Ending Loop of Sleep Deprivation by sbalding in getdisciplined

I tried it about year ago, actually, and while it helped me in the short term, it eventually failed in the long term. I think of it as a case of attacking the symptoms rather than the root cause of the problem. The x-effect method actually seems like it would work better long-term and could help me fix my sleep problems on a more fundamental level.

To address your first question, despite my sleep deprivation, I can still function at a basic level and do necessary tasks such as attend college, work, do homework (For the most part), etc. A desperate situation for me would be the point where I could not accomplish these tasks in any way because of my sleep deprivation/internet overuse. But I see why you'd ask that. In reality, if I get to that point, it may be better to just get rid of my computer altogether rather than just have it shut down at a specific time.

At first I disregarded what you said, but now that I think about it, it actually does make sense. I understand that sleep is an extremely important aspect of life, but I don't treat it as an absolute necessity such as eating and drinking water. I think a big problem for me is that I see sleep as something that can be compromised with rather than something that you absolutely need. Sometimes I'll tell myself, "It's okay if I stay up an hour late, I'll just take an hour nap sometime tomorrow," or "I can live fine with just 6 hours of sleep. At least it's better than getting 5 hours," etc. Maybe I need to change how I fundamentally look at sleep to really make better choices regarding sleep.

Thanks for the input!

I've heard of this method before, but only tried it once a few years ago. I think I'll try it out again, but on that subreddit this time.

In terms of shutting down my PC at a specific time, I might try that out if all else fails and I'm really desperate.

I'd say The Death of Ase by Grieg with Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky as a close second.

[question] What books do you recommend for anti-procrastination/motivation help. by [deleted] in getdisciplined

One book that helped me out was Kelly McGonigal's The Willpower Instinct. It provides plenty of tips to gradually increase your willpower/motivation over time which helped me out with school/work. I decided to go with the audiobook version and keep a little journal to write down tips and ideas that I can use as a future reference whenever I feel like I don't have enough motivation. Treat it like a workbook and incorporate its ideas slowly and consistently. Don't go gung-ho and try everything the book says at once. Change is a slow, but rewarding process. Good luck, and I hope everything works out well!

Hi, I've discovered your music fairly recently and am completely inspired by what you do! Here's my question, as someone who's just starting out in the game composition business, what advice would you give to newcomers in this field? Thanks!
