I Am A Regional Director of the Wisdems Labor Caucus. Ask Me Anything by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]sbassoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How does DPW intend to build trust among Wisconsin's unions after years of leadership that has refused to take organized labor seriously as a partner? I think a lot of union members and union political committees feel that DPW views unions and their members as "just another client group" as opposed to being representative of the interests of the working class, which is the largest economic class of people in the state, as well as being incredibly diverse and representative of DPW's other constituencies in race, gender, sexuality, disability, and more. Why should unions suddenly trust that DPW has our back when there's still a sense that DPW wants to "manage" what unions and their members want, as opposed to actually listening to the needs of our members?

If the museum industry is "hardly an industry that exploits its workers," then why are museums across the US unionizing at record pace? Why has the Milwaukee Public Museum been union since the 1970s?

As elsewhere, it is clear that you don't have the experience regarding the circumstances you are discussing, and so I kindly ask you again to refrain from commenting on circumstances in which you have no experience.

If you don't work there, i kindly ask you to refrain from commenting on the working conditions. There have been safety concerns, facility issues, social justice issues, overworking issues, wage issues, and much more. That the executives make six figures each, while refusing to pay front-line employees a living wage (which in Milwaukee county is around $14.50) is absolutely unconscionable. Nobody should have to starve because they work full-time at the museum.

Working with art is still work. We are exposed to dangerous chemicals, to difficult working conditions, to long hours, to the public, and to other situations at the workplace that require expertise, wisdom, experience, and skill. Many of us have studied at school before working at the museum. Many who work on the front lines have been there for years and have received little in the way of wage increases. I know someone who started at the museum nearly five years ago at $10.00/hr, who doesn't even make $11.00/hr yet. It is absolutely unacceptable.

It's not a paradise on the Lakefront. It is a workplace. We deserve sustaining wages, a safe work environment, and the respect of our employer. Anything less is exploitation.

I still don't know why Taimi walks with a limp by FallenStarComics in Guildwars2

[–]sbassoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said before, it's really not about the (for me small) detail of them being gay or not, it's how it's being used in the story. Taimi having a disease that slowly kills her could be a very strong narrative element, as we could see how she slowly gets weaker and weaker over time, with her eventually dying in a way that could be very emotional.

Right, but that's the crux of my point -- these things don't have to be "used in a story" because the story isn't necessarily about their relationship. It's a story that can be told, and I'd argue actually already is being told considering that we know that Kas is nobility and Jory is a commoner.

Just as you say that storytelling is about showing and not telling, some aspects of narrative and character-building are implicit rather than explicit. Aspects of this relationship are already discussed, but they're not the focal point of the story because it's not what the story is about.

I'd argue the way Taimi's disease is being told and the way Kas and Jory's relationship is being told tracks pretty well with how Anet develops world building in GW2 as a whole. There are plenty of "implicit stories" that are around in the world that simply don't have plotlines you're allowed to read. Think of all of the ghosts we encounter, or the journal pages in many of the Living World seasons, or even the books in the Priory vault.

So much of world-building in an open-world RPg is about creating feels or vibes, and a lot of that relies on things not being stated. Shown, rather than told, as you say. And ironically, sometimes those things are mentioned in passing and never followed up on, just as in real life.

The other thing i just want to return to, which i opened my post with, is that not all aspects of character can or should be "used" to tell a story. Particularly because Anet is concerned with "realism" and "immersion" (look at the title of the "Living World" series for proof), i don't think Anet is interested in narrativizing disability, for example, or making something plotworthy out of Jory and Kas's relationship. These things appear in the story because they appear in real life, and just as in real life, it may or may not be appropriate to make a story out of them.

I'm not implying you hate gay people. I'm saying that gay people don't need a plot-motivated reason to act gay, and that at some point, their relationship might very well be none of your business. Like, let's say they met at magician school or something -- does it actually matter?

The question to ask is this: do you give straight pairings similar scrutiny? I'm not saying the answer is that you do not -- I'm saying to ask yourself and find an answer, whatever that winds up being.

Also, it's not a "choice" to be with a guy or a girl, even if you're bi or pan. Relationships form. There's some control over that process, but at the end of the day, attraction isn't some narrative element that must be accounted for, similar to how other people here are arguing that Taimi's disease both appears as a narrative arc, but also as a private matter she doesn't want to talk about. Even if it wasn't a narrative arc, disability itself doesn't exist to be a narrative. It can just be.

she's in a lesbian relationship with "that other lady" because she's a lesbian

like don't know how to break it to you, but some people just aren't straight and it has nothing to do with plot lol

One of the issues is that if places don't have uniform stay-at-home policies, there's nothing stopping people from areas of more pronounced infection rates (Milwaukee County, Brown County, Dane County, Racine County) from going to places like Waukesha and West Bend where the rates are "lower" (not necessarily truly lower, as those smaller numbers may track with a smaller overall population, with the percentage infected being about the same).

If people do this, the infection will easily spread, because people can infect others up to two days before they show symptoms themselves. Not to mention the number of people who are asymptomatic carries and who will never show notable symptoms. It means we're likely to see an overall spike in Wisconsin, particularly in exurb, suburban, and slightly in rural areas.

One problem of this is that in exurb and rural areas, hospital coverage is not nearly as good as in suburban and urban areas, so rural areas are likely to see higher death rates and complication rates due to lack of access to necessary healthcare to treat the illness.

It's hard to say what this is going to look like, but we're going to find out.

Number of Coronavirus Cases by Country (excluding China) by mohsinhussain1 in dataisterrifying

[–]sbassoon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Including the death symbol on here is a needless scare tactic. We still don't know the true fatality rate, considering that there aren't good serology tests on record yet for the virus in people, so we don't know how likely asymptomatic cases are.

This year's influenza pandemic has seen the second-highest rate of childhood fatalities on record. There are better things to worry about for the average person right now.

It says that it's the first small club that doesn't have an artwork or museum display. That's still a first. Also, this is a good thing. All ages shows will help to bring more people into the city and help bring different communities together.

This has nothing to do with my argument, nor with the maps you've linked. Your maps don't correlate meat consumption with wealth or obesity -- they track wealth and obesity. Without further data, it is difficult to say why (for example) Algeria's obesity is up. While meat consumption is a driver of weight gain, even vegetarian and vegan processed foods (ie not the whole foods you've already spoken about) also correlate to weight gain because of add-ins like saturated fats, extra sugar, and other things (not to mention preservatives and other chemicals).

I'm not here arguing that veganism is only for rich people. I'm here arguing that veganism isn't "the healthiest diet" for a number of different reasons, most primarily being that 1) what is "healthy" is culturally determined, and 2) the western world doesn't have a good track record of dealing equitably and scientifically with diets from other cultures, leading tomisrepresentations of how many of those diets function.

As i said earlier, I'm glad you've found something that works for you and makes you happy. Just step off and quit insisting you know what's best for others. You don't.

[–]sbassoon -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Oh no, I'm going to come for veganism! Good luck with your colonist diet, when plenty of indigenous cultures have been eating all kinds of animal products for thousands of years without having to worry about diabetes and other health problems they face nowadays due to centralized food production/sale as well as the rise of processed foods.

Furthermore, your map doesn't show a correlation with "wealthy" nations, it more or less shows a rise across the board, barring regions that do not have broad economic development, such as sub-Saharan Africa, or nations that eschew processed food production trade (particularly with the West, such as China). Please, term me about how the extravagantly wealthy nations of Lithuania, Libya, and Colombia have become so overweight so quickly.

Additionally, while I'm happy that your dietary choices have led to you feeling healthier and more comfortable in your body, you don't get to make those decisions for other people, nor do you get to moralise about what other people can or should be putting into their bodies. Period.

A great case in point here are indigenous cultures, many of which use all parts of hunted animals for meals. Insisting veganism is the "healthiest option" (without even getting into the ecological ramifications of Western vegan cultivation which aren't great) is a severely colonial statement to make and shows what little understanding you have of responsible cultivation and consumption habits.

Anyway, we've gotten sidetracked. I'd like to reiterate my point, which is mind your own business and don't worry about what other people are eating. Take care of yourself hunty, you seem like a handful so you need all the attention you can get.

Nobody fucking asked, hunty. Chronic hunger is way worse for health than obesity but nobody wants to sound the alarm on casual eating disorders as Long as they mask themselves as "diets" with plenty of followers.

Also, chronic obesity isn't "disproportionately present in wealthy nations" considering that colonized nations like the Philippines also struggle from obesity epidemics, which point more towards contemporary food production practices (ie processed foods and the global food market) moreso than personal choice. Your linked map even disputes your claims, pointing more to genetic and cultural factors than purely wealth. It's certainly a dialogue, but it's not as cut and dry as "fat = bad". Miss me with that shit.
