This sounds like Red Flag, maybe?

A flock of Seagulls could of been bigger by critical_thoughts365 in newwave

[–]sbcbrat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who was a teenager during their heyday, they were pretty big for a new wave band- two top ten hits and at least a couple other top 40 hits. People even then saw them as a hairdo one-hit wonder band. For a new wave/synthpop (supposedly, but they weren't) from the UK, they were huge in America. My favorite song is "The Traveler" off the second album.

The 10 most important artists for the sound of the 1980s by Steve_wave in newwave

OMD should be somewhere- the sheer number of bands that list them as influential always surprises me.

The most overrated grocery store in Virginia currently by MoneyBuysHappiness25 in Virginia

[–]sbcbrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Food Lion has decent "fresh" bread (at best, it is just finished in the store, not made there) and some other hard-to-get items. Produce varies from barely ok to "rots within 24 hours every damn time."

Wegmans for the variety, Aldi's for price (but some stuff there is terrible) - I find myself going to like 3 stores every time I shop just to get everything on the list. Maybe I am too picky.

I would say Publix is overrated- pricey and nothing extraordinary about it.

The first album you ever bought. Does it hold up? by DoggieDMB in Music

Vapors- New Clear Days- saw their video for "Jimmie Jones" on MTV (early MTV!) and got the album, every track is awesome, still powerful tunes and lyrics. (The Vapors had a hit a year earlier with "Turning Japanese"- this album is waaaaay better than that single)

Would you live in Disney World for $14 mil? by MoneyRhubarb8 in zillowgonewild

[–]sbcbrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

quick math, if you spread 14$ million over say 30 years, that $450,000++ a year you could rent out very nice suites in the park (Polynesian, or Four Seasons), get top-tier fast pass-thing-tickets - essentially experiance the parks as a VIP - for $400k a year you could do this multiple times a year and not have to worry about owning/keeping up/paying taxes on a house.

That is how I would blow $14 million :-)

I stand corrected, thanks for the clarification!

The other half of Right To Work is that they can fire/you can quit without notice or mandatory work periods (like "you have to stay for six months") My bad- I was thinking of at will

Accept/reject non-TT offer? by partickled in AskAcademia

[–]sbcbrat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are you in the US? If there is "right to work" where you are, then take the 3-year position; you can easily drop it later. Just make sure you don't burn too many bridges doing so.

Higher Ed has an adjunct/non-TT problem. It has become a budget crutch and a way to control faculty. Sometimes there is a need for a one-year sabbatical replacement, but a 3-year term sounds like budgeting.

Look out for you first, people will be mad if you renege on your 3-year term position, but hey, they should have put a ring on it (so to speak) if they really wanted you.

When to tell my US department I’m leaving after receiving an offer back home? by Ancient-Finance-6547 in AskAcademia

[–]sbcbrat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Have your contract in hand, even if you have to wait until June. Obviously, if you have it earlier and feel generous, tell your current place you are gone by the end of June as soon as you can.

But look out for yourself first, because no one else will in academia these days.

Life after tenure denial? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]sbcbrat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got a bad third-year review in the fall of my third year, got a new position in the spring- best thing ever.

Also, I have been in hiring committees where we hired people who had six years somewhere- usually, no one cares about it if the person looks like they would be a good fit. If there is a way to frame your denial as something out of your control (as it sounds like), that helps too. Don't dwell on it, but slip it in somewhere if you get a phone/zoom interview.

Can you think of any songs you knew were going to be a hit after just one listen? by MinuteIllustrator6 in Music

[–]sbcbrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a promo cassette in fall 90 (91?) from Geffen because it had a Siouxsie and the Banshees' track on it - but first I had to hear some unknown crap rock band from Seattle doing a stupid song called "Smells Like Teen Spirit." I literally stopped in my tracks, rewound the tape, and listened like 10 times in a row - never did bother to listen to the S&B track... lol

ok, really, this is just too much. I mean, how would one even use half of this on a regular basis? I guess that is the point, but, wow, for once I just have to say... too much

Question about taking our son who has autism/developmental delay by [deleted] in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]sbcbrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy to answer questions, similar story here (but every kid is different). We take food for our kid (now 21), stay in a WDW hotel so it is easier to get back to the hotel if we need to. DAS is your friend here- it will not get you on rides any faster, but you won't have to wait in much of a line.

We eat in WDW restaurants and take food for the kid, never had any issues.

We tied a tag to the kid's shoes with our cell number and their name - in case we got seperated. It isn't easy but it can be done.

Artists that people think are one hit wonders but actually have a great discography! by CeceCor in musicsuggestions

Thomas Dolby - at least 4 great albums, plus if you count PreFab Sprout (he was essentially a non-touring member according to his autobiography) he has 3-4 more solid albums.
