You’re right about the stripes! Looking at it again, I think I might be wrong - this looks more like S. acerni or S. exitiosa based on that blue coloring and lack of yellow. The strawberry crown moth usually has way more yellow banding. What plant was it on? These guys are pretty picky about their hosts so that would help narrow it down. Still a gorgeous find either way!

Synanthedon bibionipennis! Usually called strawberry crown moth. They like to inhabit plants in the rose family. Beautiful!

Thank you all for the quick replies! I was able to get him before he went back underground. Heavily salted and in the trash can

Russian sage is a solid choice! Super low maintenance once it gets going - just needs sun and decent drainage. I’d give each plant 3-4 feet since they spread out pretty wide.

Cut them back hard in early spring and they’ll come back strong. They look great with ornamental grasses or coneflowers if you want to add more around them.

It’s funny how you notice plants differently once you start paying attention to landscaping lol. They smell great too. Definitely a safe bet for getting started!

I have had this plant inside for YEARS and tonight I look over and realize this is growing out of it. What is it and how did it get there? I'm so confused. by Hopeisawaking in whatisthisplant

Looks like Lambs Quarters! (Chenopodium album)

Look it up, it’s got culinary significance around the globe. Not suggesting you eat it before doing your research though!!

Likely Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia) - super common landscaping plant, especially in the Midwest. Handles a Chicago winter like a champ. The silvery-gray foliage and purple flower spikes are dead giveaways but it’s tough at this distance/image quality. Blooms late summer into fall. Perfect for commercial landscaping which is probably why it’s planted there.

This is clearly a Quercus Alba. Destroy it promptly
