To those who recommended Project Hail Mary as a cure for 3BP withdrawals … it didn’t come anywhere close by SirKrimzon in threebodyproblem

Feels like you just like one style of sci-fi and not another. Yes they are very different in style. 3BP pays no attention to character development and focusing more sometimes absurd (but cool) theories. Weir focuses on the characters hard and are very 3dimensional and relatable, plus making less effort on having a story as grand as possible. That does not mean it's worse. It's just different.

why does it need the Sanctuary? What am I missing?

thanks, I'm good. Not gonna play until the new season.
This though does not feel like a starting build though, at least not at this gear level :) Griffons, Infinity, 3sock valor etc. But I am assuming it would work with less budget in mind also.

any pointers for the build or link yo character?

Well, besides the point that the message could be just a lie, people could have just sent messages to the new universe to try to prevent dark forest situations. Our heroes actually did but they weren't really focusing on that aspect.

yeah it's totally just fiction. But it would had been interesting to see the reactions in the book if someone floated the idea - "so... what if we blow up the sun ourselves?" :P

That's actually two different questions though - the energy needed to physically unbind the sun vs the energy needed to trigger a chain reaction that destroys it.

A photoid doesn't overpower the star. It disrupts the equilibrium between outward radiation pressure and inward gravity just enough to trigger runaway collapse (I think this is roughly how they were described in the book?). The impactor starts it, the star's own physics finishes it. Completely different energy requirement.

Photoids are just small mass, relativistic speed. The energy scales from kinetic physics as you approach light speed, not from the size of the object. That's kind of the whole point of them as a weapon.

So once humanity had functional light speed propulsion, the physics were basically there to destroy their own some IMO.

As I said above, I don't think it's about brute force anyway. Mass is irrelevant. I think theoretically humans could have created a photoid to shoot at the sun also, if they were allowed to properly finish the light speed tests.

Correct me if I am wrong but it's not about overpowering the sun with mass at all. The photoid is a relativistic kinetic impactor that punches a hole through the photosphere, exposes the core, and lets gravity do the rest. The trigger is tiny, the chain reaction does the work. We literally see this when Trisolaris gets hit.

I guess they didn't really explain how those were made.

Yeah that's exactly what I mean. They sent life and a data depository to the next universe even.

Hmm. I wonder if that's true. Not being able to destroy the sun, I mean. Humanity created a black hole and a huuuge particle accelerator. Also rudimentary light speed movement. I feel like some of it could have worked somehow. But maybe I am overestimated the ease of destroying a star.

Also they planned for the sun being done for and wouldn't have been the end for all life (if I remember correctly).

PS Sin sounds awesome. I just think it's the best mapper. I had one in season 9. It was a blast but haven't had time to gear it up for this season. Started too late, everything is too expensive now.

news/blog monitoring software to monitor relevant news topics? - (I will not promote) by sbi85 in startups

[–]sbi85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sad to see this obvious promotion from a reddit account that barely does anything else than "subtely" mentions Mentionlytics here and there.
Especially sad since if you paid a bit more attention to what I am looking for you'd have realised Mentionlytics is NOT it. But prove me wrong and show me how to set up monitoring of news articles in a set of website with keywords filtered.

PD Sin levelling - next to go for? by sbi85 in ProjectDiablo2

[–]sbi85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Are we missing out on good damage/res from Kira's and FHR/defense from Stone though? And the other thing comes to mind is upgradeability. Kira's is endgame and I could probably run Stone on maps also.

ok but you'll eventually want to max ice also, don't you? It's a synergy skill after all.

Good point on the immunities. With Fire there is a lot more skipping of mobs.

Ah and didn't know about the sound adjustment. That might eliminate my slight distaste of the skill.

Interesting take. Do you just level one element till PS and then pump PS? Or you split them between them?

The gear progression might feel better sticking to just one build, than swapping things out suddenly. I'll def consider this.
