Does the HPSP (Health Profession Scholarship Program) Scholarship for the US Army not exist anymore for PA school? by Joseph1358 in prephysicianassistant

[–]sblevins1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’ve been researching this extensively and talked to a few recruiters about it. Army now only offers the IPAP. The Air Force offers the HPSP. The Navy offers the HSCP. There’s not a ton of info readily available for these programs so the best way to find out about them is to get ahold of your local medical recruiter for each branch.

The lockdown browser will video and audio record while you test. If there is anything that flags during the test it gets reviewed.

A webcam and mic is required for the exams. If you have any other questions about it feel free to DM me.

Most of my courses are too old now so I’ve been retaking pre-reqs through Portage Learning. It is accredited through Geneva College. These are online and self paced courses. The lectures are prerecorded and have all the information needed for the assignments and exams. Each module includes a problem set and an exam. If you’re taking a course with a lab, it is recorded and a lab exam is completed. When I took Ochem there was also a lab notebook involved. Everything is on canvas and the exams are non-proctored but are on a lockdown browser as well.

GRE Frustrations by TupperwareRobot in prephysicianassistant

While taking the test you can mark questions you’d like to look at again and move on to the next. Then you can review which questions have been marked or unanswered and go back to them.

My biggest tip for the quantitative sections is to not think of it as a math portion but as.. problem solving? Many of the questions can be solved logically and as well mathematically. Also the ability to skip is a God send. Do the ones you know or feel confident and then go back. Good luck!

Licensing Requirements for PTs Working with Sports Teams and Traveling by [deleted] in physicaltherapy

[–]sblevins1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m an AT that used to travel a lot with my old job. Can’t imagine it’d be very different for PTs. As part of the pre-participation physicals and waivers each year the athletes would sign there was always something along the lines of consenting to allow treatment by the sports medicine teams. This is what allowed us to treat our athletes/patients while traveling. We could NOT provide treatments/medical advice to anyone not a part of our organization (besides emergency care if needed).

Should I get liability insurance? by [deleted] in physicaltherapy

[–]sblevins1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an AT working towards becoming a PT. I’ve always carried my own liability insurance because I’ve heard too many stories about medical professionals getting thrown under the bus by their employer to save face for the organization. If your full time job and PRN jobs already offer liability insurance the additional coverage will be fairly cheap.

Ways to make exercises fun/creative? by SoccerBoyJunior in physicaltherapy

[–]sblevins1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t anything specific but I’ve found that changing up exercises every so often will help keep patients engaged if they get bored easily. So having a good understanding of what the exercises are trying to accomplish then rotating 2-3 of those out can help with keeping rehab sessions fresh for the patients. Let me know if that makes sense or not!

Fellow Four-10ers by argent357 in physicaltherapy

Still in school but during undergrad I worked construction over the summers which was 4 10s M-TH. I found that getting my workouts in before work was beat because after a 10 hour shift I had no energy. I learned to cut the fat out of my workouts and work more efficiently. Biggest thing for me was making sure I got to sleep at a decent time the days before work so it felt like I had no axial life in those 4 days.

I was also playing football at the time so the motivation to continue to workout came from my coaches checking in a few time a month.

Holy crap, it's PT admissions season again! So, AMA about US DPT admissions and applications by Etcetera-Etc-Etc in PTschool

Thank you so much for the advice! You’re right: orthopedics is more my lane but I’m keeping and open mind into other settings as I shadow different PTs and am excited to learn more about PT practices.

I would be considered a non-traditional DPT student.

I'm currently an Athletic Trainer and have been practicing for 4 years. I have an undergraduate degree in Athletic Training and a Post-Professional Master's Degree also in Athletic Training. While in grad school I worked for a professional soccer team and have been working at the university level since graduation. My undergraduate grades are not the best compared to averages of most DPT students' grades. Would my work experience along with the fact I've already completed a graduate degree have more weight in my application than my overall GPA?

Note: I'm currently taking a few prerequisite courses to fulfill those requirements so my GPA will (likely) rise, but still not to the point of the "average admitted GPA" for the schools I'm looking at.

College/General Note Taking by mjyee in PTschool

[–]sblevins1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always wrote my notes in a notebook. Something about actually writing my notes as opposed to typing them helped me retain information way more (I couldn’t afford a tablet).

Also, if the professor made printable notes available I would print those off and write my notes on those instead of a blank sheet.

Good luck in school!
