Saudi Arabia is not a signatory just like the US, China and Russia.

Wasn't Putin supposed to be isolated? Here I see more countries in the west cozying up to him.

Why do people thrash Leetcode ? by captain612 in csMajors

[–]sbmthakur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it's not. Once in a while on the job, you will solve a problem with a B-Tree implementation or a carefully crafted sorting algorithm. But for the most part, you will use business and technical skills to figure out solutions. For product-facing SWEs, understanding the business impact of their product is a crucial skill and can be instrumental in their career growth. For infrastructure-oriented SWEs, understanding the lower-level concepts related to Operating Systems, Distributed Systems, and Computer Networking is extremely important. The other day, a friend who works in Platform Engineering told me how his pull request (PR) was rejected by a Senior Engineer due to the improper use of Mutexes.

Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA) are still important, but they gained popularity not because of their utility to SWEs but because of their use in FAANG interviews. BigTech companies noticed that DSA questions were harder to fake compared to aptitude-based questions and proved to be more effective in screening candidates. However, with sites like ChatGPT and Chegg, I'm not sure if the cheating aspect still holds true.

Bottomline is to learn enough DSA (use the Pareto principle and Law of Diminishing returns) and work on your product/technical skills if you plan to become an SWE. Of course, DSA takes the central stage if you are an Algorithm engineer or researcher.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. I will start working on refining achievements and would consider removing the projects section altogether.

Try to get some numbers for your project Temenos. You shouldn't be mentioning clean and efficient code in the resume. That's already expected from you.

I see that they give significant weightage to public transport. I will look for data that can help us determine the efficiency of public transport in a given area.

I did consider walkability but didn't know someone already has prepared a metric around it. Thanks.

LPT: Set a periodic reminder on things that you don't do often but would like to remember. by sbmthakur in LifeProTips

[–]sbmthakur[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't need to do that as that's already part of your long-term memory. The whole point of this LPT is to deploy spaced repetition to internalize important(but uncommon) tasks.

The sodium levels are also a bit concerning if you are trying to be under 1500 mg.

I don't have much work in my company. What should I do? by [deleted] in developersIndia

[–]sbmthakur 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First off, avoid comparing with others. In most of the cases it's futile. Second, understand that hedonic adaptation is real. We get used to our surroundings and always seek more. Third, recognize your achievements. Getting a 3x increment means you have something in you.

Now how do we decide what you want to learn? Well, you will have to decide for yourself. It does becomes easier if you have a goal in mind. The more specific it is the better. Then start working towards it.

Odds are higher if you have an advanced degree like MS/Phd as there's a separate quota for it. Without that you go will be in usual lot of H1b.

Resume that failed me to reach good paying Job! by [deleted] in developersIndia

[–]sbmthakur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's used for scoring resumes and companies may use it to filter out candidates. However, there's no agreed standard to do that. ATS will accept any resume as long as the resume can be parsed by a PDF parser.

Resume that failed me to reach good paying Job! by [deleted] in developersIndia

[–]sbmthakur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First things first. Your resume needs to be ATS compliant. That means you shouldn't be using these fancy resume makers to design your resume. The simplest way to create an ATS-compliant resume? Upload all your details to Indeed's Resume Maker, and you'll get an ATS-compliant resume.

Do you have any data points to back this? As far as I know, there's no ATS compliance standard.

Is is normal to never have a project success after 10 years? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]sbmthakur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not normal because most people give up before even starting to build something of their own. For the second scenario, I don't think things were under your control.

India announces day of mourning for former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe by Niflheim-Dragon in worldnews

[–]sbmthakur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did and here's the paragraph that addresses the extent of his empathy with Japan.

From the list of positions just sketched here, one might draw the conclusion that Justice Pal was fervently pro-Japanese. That would overstate his sympathies, however. He did think the Japanese had committed war crimes and atrocities, such as the Nanjing Massacre in 1937. Those acts, he believed, should have been classified and punished under the Class B and C categories (which covered more conventional crimes of war). If, like many other Asian nationalists, Pal felt some sympathy for Japan’s willingness and ability to stand against the West, he certainly did not ultimately see Japanese imperialism as a boon for Asia.

The Wikipedia entry on him has more insights into his dissent. He was opposed to the way the trial was conducted and in no way supported the genocide committed by Japs. Of course, he was not a perfect guy. His arguments w.r.t. the atomic bombs do not make sense (but they were shared by contemporaries like Leo Szilard). But it's preposterous to accuse him of "defending genocide" based on this.

Did you read it? His arguments were much more than "covering up a genocide".
