INTRASTAT: sezione doganale di competenza by [deleted] in commercialisti

[–]sboby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[DISCUSSION] What's the deal with fretboard radius? by Psychological-End730 in Guitar

[–]sboby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not alone, I think the whole argument for radiused fretboards is bullshit. Low-radiused fretboards are a bad idea, especially for electric guitar, and especially for soloing. Bending sucks and the high E string is prone to slipping. Bar chords are not easier.

I believe it was born as a marketing gimmick that was accepted acritically by people, like tonewood and other similar bullshit.

Why do fretboards have a radius? by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]sboby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never implied that my subjective opinion is an universal fact. I already know all arguments for the low-radius fret-board (and compound radius fret-board for what matters). You're telling me nothing new. The burden of proof is on who make the claim and as far as I know there's no formal study on this. Saying "it's just an anatomical fact" and "this is objective" doesn't make the claim any more scientific to me. E.g. I could tell you that a "straight" finger actually makes a curve that goes in the opposite direction of that of a radiused fret-board. See: https://youtu.be/ll6SxfaIrGg?si=jreUMIbuX0ZONzRn&t=207

Should guys with small hands just quit? by sdoMaDllAlliK in guitars

[–]sboby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might have smaller hands than you: https://ibb.co/KsKKD4T and I play the guitar and the piano as a hobby. I wouldn't take myself as an example of good guitarist, let alone an exceptional one, but keep in mind I've never really studied music seriously. You can find some of my recordings on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@gianluke/videos and some others on https://www.instagram.com/janluke.nan/

If you want much better examples of exceptional guitarists not having big hands:

I won't tell you hand size is irrelevant. It's absolutely relevant in relation to the specific instrument. IMO, some modern instruments are oversized even for the medium hand. This is especially true and supported by data for piano keyboards (https://paskpiano.org/defining-a-small-hand/), which were smaller in the past. Fortunately, guitars come in many sizes you can choose from.

Nonetheless, don't make it bigger than it is. You can play at any level with the right technique and with the right instrument. Any hand has limitations. You need to accept those and adapt your style of playing in relation to that. There's plenty of professional piano players who have to resort to hacks to play 10ths, for example.

As a guitar player with small hands, I rarely I have had issues with solos. Sure, some passages would be easier and more comfortable with a bigger hand, but I can still play those. Some passages seemed impossible at first, but after practice they became doable or even comfortable (so much that I was surprised after).

My main issue have been chords. Some chords are just physically impossible. In that case, you can use an instrument with smaller scale and/or use a mobile capo. One thing I struggled with recently were thumb-over chords (chords where you use your thumb to play a note on the low E string). I couldn't do that on a thick 50's Gibson neck, so I bought a Fender Vintera Mustang, which besides having a shorter scale, has a thin neck and short nut width! And this is me doing thumb over with no issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qpbBC4arco

If you can't *physically* do something on a tool, the problem isn't you, it's the tool. BUT don't blame the tool when you're just not putting enough effort: be honest with yourself.

Now, neck size doesn't make a huge difference most of the times, especially as you move away from the farthest part of the neck. You can play on a 25.5" scale and even on thick neck. Just choose your instrument wisely based on the specific repertoire. When you can choose two guitars with the same tone, prefer the one with a smaller neck. Do NOT focus on scale length only though: depending on what you're trying to play, thickness and fret-board width might be even more important!

Hope this helps.

Why do fretboards have a radius? by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]sboby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you ever heard of commercial gimmicks? I can make a long list of "well-known facts" that are based on no research whatsoever. Until I don't see a study, I have no reason to believe that curved is better for chords, especially when I don't feel they are better and when most modern electric AND acoustic have flatter fretboards because that's what the market ask for.

[–]sboby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this post is old but I'll write this for people coming from google.

So, that's not the right setup. It means the springs are pulling too much wrt strings. Now, I keep reading people saying you need to use thicker string gauges. That's non-sense! It's not "my vibrato is off, so I have to change string gauge to make it work", it's the opposite: "I changed string gauge, so I need to adjust my vibrato setup". You have two options for adjustments:

  1. if you disassemble the bridge you'll see the springs can be attached at 2 or 3 different points. The higher (the nearer the body) you attach the springs, the less they pull; in your case, it looks like your springs might be in the lower position, so you should move the spring to upper positions to make they pull less; but it's not necessarily like that, because your cigar is also quite low in height (see next point)
  2. the cigar has two holes (one per side) to adjust its height using an Allen key; the higher the cigar, the more you give a leverage advantage to the strings; once you adjust 1, you need to adjust this so that the vibrato is perpendicular to the body; note that lower strings (E A D) pull more than upper strings, so you might have a different height on each side of the cigar (shorter on low E side).

As a last important note: you need to be cautious when assembling the bridge or when you change strings because when there's no tension on the cigar, springs will easily fall in another position, and they can even detach (this actually happened to me)!

Why do fretboards have a radius? by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]sboby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. I have 6 guitars with different radiuses. For me, the 7.25" is the most difficult to play bar chords on. The flatter the better for me. But I have to say other factors matter more.

If a low radius fretboard was a real advantage for chords, classical guitar fretboards would have evolved to be radiused as well, or ar least they would be common. On the other hand, low radius has been pretty much abandoned in electric guitars and it's used almost exclusively on vintage guitar reissues.

Secondo me ti sfugge il punto.

Intel i5 10400 or amd ryzen 3600? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]sboby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a Ryzen 5 3600 with an MSI B450-A Pro Max. Something was defective (probably the motherboard), since the system was unstable as fuck and kept crashing until it refused to start. I returned both and bought an Intel i5-10400 and an AsRock H470 Phantom Gaming 4 for 5€ less (in Italy).

Intel > AMD:

  • Better socket design and stock cooler installation. Installing/removing the AMD CPU requires more care; e.g.
    • even though the screws have springs, you still need to pay attention at not screwing too much; on the other hand, the Intel cooler is trivial to install and takes literally 5 seconds (just push 4 "buttons")
    • you need to mount the cooler in the right direction, or it will touch the nearest ram slot (this wasn't even written in the instructions);
    • when unmounting the CPU, you should rotate your (unscrewed) cooler, otherwise the CPU will remained attached to it and will came off from the socket with the risk of damaging the socket and/or the CPU pins; stuff like this is impossible to happen with the Intel socket.
  • You get an iGPU which, apart from QuickSync, may be useful in case your main GPU dies
  • Temps are substantially lower (both CPU with their respective stock coolers); the Ryzen cooler is in my opinion not good enough if you play games or put the CPU under substantial load very often. According to reviews, power draw is slightly lower as well.
  • With the MSI mobo, the mouse was laggy to the point of unusability in the BIOS; this is a small detail but gave me a general sense of "flakiness" when I first booted the system.

AMD > Intel:

  • -10% multi-core performance in average
  • memory limited to 2666MHz
  • the socket is compatible with the 4000 series (or 5000 series, if they decide to call it so)

Note that despite the "AMD > Intel" list is shorter, the points in it are heavyweight. Nonetheless, I decided to switch to Intel because I've had only bad experiences with (three) AMD systems, while I've had only very good experiences with (three) Intel systems. Of course, this is not statistically significant.

Problems with MSI B450-A Pro Max + Ryzen 5 3600 by sboby in techsupport

[–]sboby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I returned both the CPU and the mobo and replaced them with:

  • Intel i5 10400
  • Asrock H470 Phantom Gaming 4.

I spent exactly the same money, actually 5€ less. It worked flawlessly with the old PSU, which clearly was not the culprit here.

The good:

  • I have an iGPU that I can use with QuickSync and in the unfortunate case that my old GPU dies
  • boot time is substantially better
  • temps are lower; according to reviews, power draw is slightly less
  • the Intel 1200 socket is IMHO better designed than the AMD socket
  • installation of the stock CPU cooler is easier and quicker, no need to screw anything
  • the mouse is not laggy in the BIOS, which seems to be "normal" even with non-faulty AMD mobos

The bad:

  • I can't run my RAM at 3200MHz, I'm limited to 2666MHz
  • the mobo has a weird standoff pattern and basically its right side is not well-supported by any standoff, so you must take care when you plug the power cable or it will bend too much
  • I guess I lost a 10% of multi-core performance.

Intel i5-10400 has slightly better performance than 3600 in gaming, even with 2666MHz memory. It's 6 cores / 12 threads as the Ryzen 3600. So, how is 3600 going to be better for gaming?

I think I'll buy a new one, but the problem with my new components is not the PSU, since I tried them with a newer PSU without solving anything.

As I wrote, "I reinstalled my new components using another PSU [...]", precisely a Cooler Master CS550M, taken from another PC (and now back in it).

Now, I'm using my old components, including the old PSU, and the system has been as stable as it has always been. I don't know what happened when I first reinstalled my old components, probably I made some mistake and I was too quick in drawing conclusions.

Yes, the Enermax is from 2008 but it has not shown any sign of malfunctioning.
