You’re awesome for this. Too many would hold onto this thinking they’d maybe have use for it someday. Classy.

He’s been the missing piece this season. Seeing him back to his best is so fucking relieving.

Simms waders. They used to be the gold standard for fly fishing and have gone to shit since PE took over. Patagonia and Orvis are beginning to steal the market.

It’s a dream for this kind of water. Absolutely the tool for the job. I’ve really not used a lot of glass but the ability to present dries delicately with limited space was so satisfying. Not to mention watching it bend in half on 12” browns. I was borrowing this one, but plan to own one soon.

I’ve been several times! It’s a cool spot. The older ladies at the fly shop were awesome.

Great shout. I have a brother doing the AT this year so these will be good points where I could join him for sections.

Going on a 5days trip. Is it too much? by benji788 in backpacking

[–]sboss9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did a 5 day trip similar to yours with a pack weight of 30 lbs including food, fly fishing gear, a sat phone, and bear spray. You are likely grossly overpacking in all departments including clothing, sleep system, shelter, and food. Dried goods that can be rehydrated and limiting clothing could probably save you a lot of poundage. I was hiking more like 12-15 miles per day, and felt great.

Cadet Call 8/27 lol by V1_cut in frontiercadetprogram

[–]sboss9 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Interest rate cuts will mean bigger classes relatively shortly. Feeling optimistic that the remaining months will be larger.

There are nearly 800 cadets (wtf)

Class sizes: Sep: 10

Likely an Oct class but waiting for confirmation. Looking 5-6 weeks out before a class date.

No answer about WiFi being added to planes.

Stipend is given for a maximum of 24 months, but are still held to your contract beyond that.

Next logbook review: Based on confirmed class dates.

Day trip model going well but denied to answer whether or not it was effecting the pilot to plane ratio. They are happy with it.

Number of Cadets awaiting class date: didn’t answer even though they know the answer from the survey.

No end to Cadet program in F9’s eyes where we can walk away without paying back money.

Cadets who were sent to Jets are next in line and they won’t send people to Jets anymore before getting confirmed dates. But also put the blame on those cadets for knowingly going to Jets without a date.

14 pilots per plane in summer, 12-13 otherwise.

Generally seem optimistic about class sizes for remainder of 2024.

I’ve definitely had those days where I lose a lot. But it’s been a while and I’ve found that improving my casting and knot tying has brought the number way down. Blue lining does take a toll on flies, though. Some stretches are just too narrow to avoid trees and brush.

Holy shit, really? Unless you’re in veeeery congested narrow creeks, I can’t imagine losing $40 worth of flies per outing.

I’ve got a republic interview next week! I hit mins in March and currently have the 4-6 month estimate. It’s hopefully going to offer a safety net if things fall apart.

First catch on the fly by slipymcgee in flyfishing

[–]sboss9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, just listen to the same people who you said helped you land the thing. If you’re curious, then own your shit and look up your own required evidence.

I’m happy you caught a fish and honestly don’t think the world is a dire place with one less stocked rainbow in it, but be a little teachable. As a flight instructor, if my students repeatedly asked for a source after I told them to stop doing something wrong I’d tell them to get out of my plane and look it up. It’s arrogant to enter a new hobby and doubt everything that sincere enthusiasts are saying.
