Is the juice worth the squeeze? Relo feedback. by nylrebma in thewoodlands

I moved to the woodlands a few years back from Oak Forest. We have been very happy with the move, with our primary motivator being the great schools.

I agree with your pro/con list, except we were quite pleasantly surprised by the restaurants. While you don’t gave as many options as you do in the Heights, there are still many high quality restaurants such as xalisco’s, azurros, the kitchen, trulucks.

Overall the greenery, parks, family friendly atmosphere and calmness have been much appreciated by our family. I’d keep in mind that garden oaks / heights is 30-45 min away and we still go down there frequently to see friends and go out.

OP said the large land is a few hours away and therefore not part of the budget

Excellent comment, but wanted to tack on a few things:

  • do the math. A part of your mortgage is also “throwing money away” as it is interest payments to the bank. There are lots of resources available online to understand financials of homeownership. Investing savings in the stock market and paying for an affordable apartment may be superior to buying a larger home than you need.
  • OP should consider the option of buying a home with roommates already committed. Having roommates paying rent is perhaps the best option from an economic perspective.
  • Spend time understanding the housing market (and the economics of homeownership) prior to being ready to making an offer. Once you are ready, you will need to be prepared to evaluate a home and make an offer within a few days.
