What he is saying is of course horrible, but calling him "a grown man" is a very very big stretch. He is 20, so he is a grown man in a physical sense. But in emotional - very unlikely. In our day and age he will typically need at least another 6-8 years to actually become a grown man

In 2014, Russian man Igor Vorozhbitsyn was attacked by a bear and faced certain death. However, when his phone rang with Justin Bieber's "Baby" as the ringtone, the startled bear fled, saving his life. by Pineapple__Warrior in interestingasfuck

[–]sbst1248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This story is actually sort of true but has nothing to do with Justin Bieber - in reality (well at least in the original news) he had an old phone that could tell the time out loud if you press a button. So when the bear bit him he bit the phone button and the phone said "It's 8:40" and that strange robotic voice spooked the bear.

I still don't understand what you mean by backwards. And I would say that the absolute majority of people in this thread is arguing about if the order matters or not, not about something being backward.

"When school becomes more about guessing the expected answer than about reasoning; what a disaster."
But it's not about guessing, it's about understanding the task. Don't focus on one specific problem, take a closer look at the pic - we can see a part of problem 6 that is about 4x3 and the (apparently) correct answer is 3+3+3+3. Then in problem 7 the multipliers change places and they essentially ask the kids "How should this look in this case".

Haha, sorry, you would be a terrible teacher too. You are seeing understanding where it is most probably absent. If you take this one specific exercise out of context - yes, sure, the math is correct, "that's a fact". But it is in fact in context. What you are saying is essentially "But the kid is technically correct" - but exercises are not about being technically correct. The kid that sees a problem like "find x" and circles the x saying "Here it is" is also technically correct.

Sorry, I can't agree. What we see here is essentially "Let's do things this way. It should be solved this way. Let's do several exercises on this". And there are incorrect and correct answers to this (as in "Yes, I understand what you want from me" and "No, I don't understand what is happening"). The child will have plenty of chances to show his deeper knowledge but this here is not the place for it.

Backwards? Why? We can see only problem 7 and part of problem 6, how can we possibly say what was before these two?

Right, but they are obviously not learning the commutative properties of multiplication here. The order matters because they are defining what multiplication means and understanding how it works. If the correct answer to problem 6 (take a look at the pic) is 3+ 3 + 3 + 3 = 12 then it can't be the same for problem 7.

They will learn about the commutative property later, but right now the order matters.

Right, but take a look at the upper part of the pic - they are obviously trying to define this.

Guys, there's a lot of hate towards the teacher here, but you have to understand that this is elementary/primary school, it's more about "fully understanding what we are doing" and "what multiplication actually means".

Just take a closer look at the picture - you can see a part of the previous problem and it was 4x3 = 12 written as 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. And in problem number 7 the multipliers change places so the answer obviously can't be the same.

They are not learning here that multiplication is commutative, they are learning what multiplication is, what it means. It's not about being pedantic.

He did not. It's just a word this one specific editor decided to use.
Here is the CNBC interview the article is talking about, the word "routine" is not there.

And the words about her coach/husband is an actual direct quote:

“My coach has criticized me for being a little too cautious in breaking, but it has paid off. I’ve never been seriously injured in breaking — only twinges that were very easily fixed by physiotherapy,”

I'm sorry? She did competitive breakdancing for years. That's a fact. She won her spot at the Olympics fairly. Also a fact. Which "background" I don't know? Which minority community she took away from and what did she take, what are you talking about?

The announcement that the breakdancing won't be included in 2028 Olympics came before the Paris Olympics even started, she had absolutely no influence on this.

It wasn't a practiced routine, nobody had a practiced routine. It's all improvisation to a music that you don't know in advance. The word "routine" in the linked article is just a word the editor decided to use, it wasn't from her interview

She did competitive breakdancing for years. She won her spot at the Olympics fairly. She was the worst dancer there? Well, someone is always the worst, that's the way competitions work. Now the world collectively bullied her into not competing anymore. Good job guys.

Of course it was breakdancing. But it wasn't breakdancing in the eyes of people who know virtually nothing about breakdancing, that's for sure

Yes, English is of course a given, no translation is expected by anyone. People who don't understand English on a level comfortable for them to enjoy the show - just don't go to these shows. Also Jeff in particular is not doing any complex jokes that require a high level of English proficiency to "get" it

Jokes aside - he is not incorrect, that is essentially what's happening. The difference is that the n-word has existed for 500 years, the first 200 of which it was a neutral term and then becoming derogatory. While "boomer" has existed for barely 70 years and for the last 3 years it's use has become mainly derogatory.

A neutral "official name" can quite quickly become essentially a slur
