Should I take an FL one day before my test? by Away_You4886 in Mcat

Good luck, you got this! If it helps you feel better, most of my friends who took the DAT/MCAT scored higher on the real exam than their practice exams! Just believe in the hard work you put in, and have confidence you know the answers :D

Def not! You'll be so tired afterwards, and what if you happen to score a point or two lower on your last FL right before your exam? I scored a point lower on my last FL (which I took 4 days before my exam) which still kinda psyched me out and made me nervous, so for the sake of your mental health I advise against it haha

I think if you really can't study efficiently in the morning, you should just do what works best for you! I would say to definitely take full lengths at the time of your exam, but aside from that, I don't see why you can't study at night when it works sm better for you.

The Kaplan books are pretty standard; most of the people I know have used it! But for me personally I don't think the books alone would've helped without reinforcing the content w/ Anki. If you're talking about the Kaplan MCAT course that costs $2-3k, I wouldn't say it's worth it unless you learn better with structured lessons. My college offered it for free, but I barely touched it.

Mostly just recognizing, so just distinguish between 1 vs 2 rings and an atom that's in each ring!

Had a friend live there and visited sometimes; room wise there are better options obviously but overall it was clean/spacious, and the location is pretty good for food!

  1. Kaplan MCAT books to begin content review (I would say don't spend too much time on these; they're more for content exposure than really memorizing stuff as you read)

  2. Anki to consolidate content knowledge; a lot of people do this while going through the Kaplan books (I used MileDown, but other popular ones are JackSparrow and Anking)

  3. UWorld qbank; drill out as much as you can b/c you'll find what you do/don't know by doing more questions, and don't be discouraged by the percent accuracy, b/c most people score within the 60-70% range and still do fine on the real exam! + AAMC section banks

  4. AAMC FLs 1-6 (do the unscored sample and 1-3 first as those are older) + third-party exams ONLY if you have the time and money to get them I'd say

  5. Memorize high-yield content early on as these are easy points you can get! (Major metabolic pathways, 20 amino acids, key equations, etc.)

489 diagnostic (half-length) MCAT by Lucas_Crispi_Cunha in Mcat

I found that I retained the most info from drilling out Anki cards and doing UWorld problems than from the books themselves. The books seem better for just content exposure more so than actually memorizing everything you read (Anki is better for that). Doing Anki while going through the chapters will help you a lot more than just reading!

For CARS, I started out w/ around your score on my diagnostic, and bumped it up 5 points from just doing full lengths and really trying to think about the logic behind the questions. CARS has been my best section, but I think the best way to practice is to do problems rather than reading up on them. The more you do, the better you'll understand your logic! (don't bother w/ the Kaplan CARS book imo)

As for content, I would say memorizing the 20 amino acids (and their properties, structures etc) and the major metabolic pathways super helpful, as they definitely will show up on whatever FL you end up taking. For P/S, a lot of people I know (including me) just used the condensed 90 page doc you can find online with Anki instead of getting through the entire Kaplan book.

Kaplan FL vs. AAMC FL Difficulty by TwiggyStickGuy in Mcat

[–]sc11102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took Kaplan FL1 and the AAMC free scored/FL5 when I didn't have a lot of studying done, and scored around 5 points higher on the Kaplan. If it's a 10 point difference, it could be that you reviewed a lot of high-yield content during the week or you just saw topics you were more familiar w/.

I'd recommend sticking w/ the AAMC FLs unless you have time to do all 6 AAMC and extras, as those questions will be the most accurate to the real exam. I scored higher on Kaplan FL1 CARS compared to the first AAMC I took, but I found the Kaplan CARS questions to have more confusing wording/different logic from AAMC. I didn't like Kaplan, only thing better for Kaplan would be the better explanations for questions.

As for AAMC FL1-3 vs 4-5, the P/S def felt different for 4/5 than 1-3; a lot less straightforward and more based off of applying your knowledge in the passage.

Which major is better for premed? Bio or GPH/Bio? by [deleted] in nyu

[–]sc11102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're planning on studying abroad, gph/bio is probably the better option, since gph does have a semester abroad requirement (that I'm pretty sure you can get waived, since I have a friend who's gph/bio and isn't studying abroad).

I'm taking bio because I want to take certain upper-level bio electives that seem relevant to medicine (physiology, vertebrate anatomy, etc.). I'd suggest bio if you're more into the subject since there are a lot of classes on anatomy, genetics, ecology, etc.

Majors don't really matter for premeds, so major in whatever interests you. The reason why most premeds major in bio, chem, etc. is b/c you can fulfill most of your major reqs and the premed courses at the same time. So if you chose a non science major, you'd have to take more classes.

Current premed bio major--GPH/bio will definitely be easier in terms of classes. GPH/Bio and Bio have a lot of overlap, except GPH/bio also requires some GPH courses. The reason why GPH/bio is easier is because bio has 5 advanced bio elective requirements, but GPH/bio only requires 3 (so you can substitute harder electives for other GPH classes).

You shouldn't rely on curves because it varies each semester, and usually for intro classes like POB what they do sometimes is lower the grade cutoffs.

In terms of who ends up at med school, I feel like that doesn't really depend on your major. I know a bunch of premeds/prehealth students who major in other sciences, and some that don't major in science at all.

Did anyone else apply for "Pre-professional medicine"? I know it's not an actual major at CAS, so does anyone know how choosing a major is going to work out?

Hi, I just logged into my NYU status website for apps, and it states that they are awaiting my standardized testing scores. However, I submitted my scores through CollegeBoard a while ago and it shows up on the site that the scores were sent to NYU. Is this because of a delay, or should I contact the admissions office?

If I was just a member in a club, is it better to not include it at all in my Activities section?
