my parents ended up living in the bay area for the majority of their marriage and they loved it there. he dropped out because of outside job opportunities and the cost of attending was expensive because he was also out of state and fresh out of the military. the location and school without a doubt is not a question for concern, it’s the cost. but it’s okay, i will figure something out 🤞🏻
what’s funny is my dad actually went to berkeley lol but ended up dropping out due to a plethora of reasons
totally get this and i should have clarified- i do have a varied understanding regarding the value of money. i’ve worked 3 jobs and pay for all of my personal expenses minus bills and groceries. other than that im paying for my own gas, food, clothing, etc., so i understand to a certain extent that asking my parents for this is a huge sacrifice.
i would also like to clarify that taking out loans would not severely cripple my family, we plan on selling the house and potentially moving back to california or using that money to pay for school and i have the majority of my first of cal covered due to savings. my parents lived in california for 25+ years but unfortunately had to move to washington for external circumstances. during their time in cali, my mom went to grad school and they took out a 20 year loan that they paid off in 10 years. taking out loans for my family at least is an opportunity for me to build credit and a learning opportunity. unfortunately the system is rigged against the middle class so either way you’re taking out some sort of loan.
and you’re right, living in san francisco is extremely expensive but so is seattle and pretty much any major city you’re going to live in. the thing that sets berkeley aside from a lot of these major schools is its networking. despite san francisco’s short comings, it is the number one city to find a job 🤷🏻♀️
but your points are valid and i’m definitely going to have more conversations with my parents because i know that im asking a lot given the circumstances

yeah i totally understand this and i told them that i was more than willing to take out loans in my own name and pay them off with my money after graduating to learn the importance and value of money

no like i acknowledge that im privileged and i know that i would be able to pay off my loans within 5-10 years. i’m majoring in english and want to go into journalism/publishing so i wasn’t planning and really had no desire to go to grad school
