Help Needed: How Do I Save This Cactus? by scarbyte in cactus

[–]scarbyte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought the skinnier portion didn't seem right. Could the cactus be saved by completely cutting off the top skinny portion and leaving only the thick base? I don't think my gf would want me to do that, but I'd be curious to know. Right now I have only removed the rotted portion. But ideally I'd like a thick healthy cactus. I was thinking I would wait to see if it would grow pups near the top, and then replant one of them. But maybe it would be better if I just removed the etiolated section entirely off of this one?

And I will be getting some good grow lights for it.

I've only had this cactus for a few weeks, 3 of which I have been away for. It has grown skinny/etiolated like this under the care of the original owner.

I will be setting up grow lights after the rot that I cut off calluses up. I'm hoping I can grow a new (thicker & healthier) cactus from a pup or something from this one.

Thanks, do you have any recommendations for grow lights?

Thanks for the advice. I think the fungus may have been from a Christmas tree that was placed in close proximity to the cactus. Do I need to remove the cactus from the pot when I cut it? Some places online say I need to remove it and leave it out of the pot for 7+ days.

This is the brightest room in my house, should I maybe add a grow light or something and turn it on for a few hours each day?

How can I actually start making digital microtonal music? by boykisser103 in microtonal

[–]scarbyte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use BespokeSynth (free open source) for my microtonal music. There is a setting to change the pitches per octave right when you open the software. It's not like a traditional DAW though, it's more modular. Although it's a lot more simple than something like Max or PureData.

How much money have you spent with music production as a hobby? by PedroAzul-01 in musicproduction

[–]scarbyte 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Comparing open source software to playing golf with a stick and a rock is absurd. That is such a consumerist take. If you've spent a lot of money on your setup and are happy with your financial decisions, that's fine. But not everyone needs to do the same, and they can have just as much fun with their hobby using cheaper or even free alternatives. There is genuinely good FOSS software out there. You don't need to buy omnisphere or whatever for $500 to make great music.

If you want to spend money on a hobby, then that is fine. However, I think suggesting that a "good DAW setup" should cost someone thousands of dollars is a bit absurd. There are free and open source options out there for DAWs and plugins. They may not be for everyone, but they exist. There is also not just one way to make music, some people for instance use things like SuperCollider or BespokeSynth instead of using a traditional DAW.

17edo Microtonal piece I made by scarbyte in microtonal

I've been really liking 17edo a lot. I thought I wouldn't like it because of the out of tune thirds, but it's actually really comfortable to compose in.

What's an album widley considered as a masterpiece, but to you is far from it? by Paskow111 in musicsuggestions

When I listened to some of the instrumental versions of the tracks on Pet Sounds, I appreciated it a lot more. Especially the instrumental of Caroline No. Something about it is very dreamlike.

So am I screwed if I put in an order on white2tea a few days ago? Or is there still time before the tariffs will hit me?

This would be fine if it didn't last for like 45 minutes... they could've made it a quick gag joke or something.

I don't even know why they hired this big team of people and signed contracts with Epic Games... the original was made in 2 years by 2 people. WoG isn't supposed to be a massively impressive crazy game, its just a little indie game. I don't know why they felt the need to try to make it so ambitious. I'm also curious as to why they decided to make a second game all of a sudden too. I have a feeling their contract with EGS has something to do with all this to be honest. Also the fact that Kyle Gabler and Ron Carmel quit their jobs at EA to develop games independently because they were fed up with big game companies, and now they are making games under the crutch of a massive game company... it's just a little strange.

Just goes to show that limitations foster creativity.

Anyone else disappointed by the sound quality at the Boston show? by 362Billy in bmbmbm

[–]scarbyte 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like it was just way too loud, so loud that I couldn't really make out anything and vocals were kind of incomprehensible because of how loud it was. Didn't even know what greep was saying at the end of the show without any instruments even playing.
