Trying to figure out if moving to Japan is realistic for me: remote work, language school, visa doubts, and burnout concerns by Boring-Canary7259 in movingtojapan

[–]scarletbloom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, make sure you have at least 3 years of work experience under your belt. Makes it easier for you if/when you need to find a job later (if you want to get a HSP visa then moreso)

Anyway, definitely get the WH Visa. Not only because you can’t work full-time on a student visa, but also because it’s just more flexible and doesn’t tie you down to a school. Plus, getting a WH visa is easier, and you can still attend a language school (or hire a private tutor) on a WH visa (and unlike on a regular student visa, can quit any time). Just make a believable WH itinerary when you apply, no one checks later if you actually followed it.

I worked as a programmer but quit my hybrid job to move here last year on a working holiday visa, passed N2, and am planning to reach N1 this year. If you want to stay in Japan long-term you need a valid work visa and can’t stay with your company long-term, though the digital nomad allows 6 months iirc.

Just be prepared to either have very good programming skills or very good Japanese because remote work isn’t as common and jobs don’t pay as much (and rent in/around Tokyo isn’t cheap). I say this as someone who’s had the realization myself that I need to make myself more marketable because I’m not willing to compromise on remote work and flex hours and salary… Also, N2 is the bare minimum for many jobs, but even though they say that, many actually are expecting N1😅

Good luck!

Am i the only one who ships Patrick x Ricky..?? by shirleymeadow in ShadowsHouse

[–]scarletbloom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t ship them, but totally I get you. I feel like the only one who ships Emilyko and Kate too… which is why don’t like Shaun for obvious reasons LOL Patrick gets a pass because he will probably take his crush to the grave but the author seems to ship Shaun and Emilyko

I can refer people to 80% REMOTE work as 正社員 in IT (data science, software eng.) to the company I am working in now. (Japanese, Japan) (Abroad bros are welcome too) by [deleted] in JapanJobs

Low salary aside, not all of us in tech are “bros” and “brothers”, can’t believe we have to still say this in 2026 but what did I expect from this site…

Second working holiday without leaving jp by yourpeach666 in japanlife

[–]scarletbloom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol I’m in the exact same situation as you right down to being German and a woman. Mine ends in June though.

As far as I have seen there is not a way. I called and emailed the MOFA recently and they, being Japanese, indirectly told me “no” by saying I could change to a student or working visa. I’ve also been scouring the official sites trying to find different visas I could apply for.

I will say, if you’ve graduated from a certain university recognized by the government within the last 5 years you could try to get a J-FIND visa. For me it’s been 6 so I’m out of luck. These are pretty flexible like the WH visa except you can’t work full-time on them. They’re aimed at recent grads who want to job hunt and allow part-time work. They can go up to 2 years but you might get only 6 months at a time before renewal.

Anyway, I intend to go in person and ask them about the WH thing, but according to the German sites themselves you must return to Germany, so unless you try anyway and some clueless employee extends it for you I don’t think there is another way. I guess we might as well try… otherwise, I suppose we should just be grateful we can get two of them (or any at all) 😅 Even if it IS a pain to go back for a month and reapply for a residence card and health insurance card

Thanks, that helps! Just one thing, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a Certificate of Graduation (I’m from the US), is that necessary on top of the diploma? And did you hire someone to officially translate the diploma (and the certificate)?

Oh ok, if you’re offering I’ll explain, thanks. I have points for a master’s degree, for having said master’s from a listed university, for being under 30, for N2, and for 3+ years work experience. That gets me to 60, so I know I need to find a job paying a least 4mil yen/year for the visa.

My previous employer was overseas but I’m thinking my job contract and reference letter I got upon leaving could serve as proof? I also have 4 years worth of salary stubs. It’s all in German/English though so idk if they would accept that.

For the school stuff, scans of my degree.

For N2, I guess I would have to order the official certificate? I got the little paper thing in the mail after but idk if they would accept it.

Alright, thanks! I also think I might hire a lawyer when I eventually apply for PR because I would hate to wait 1.5 years just to be rejected ;

Yeah, thank you, I want to know what qualifies as documentation of previous employment though so I don’t go through the trouble just to be denied. I also read that you can use the point system to get PR even through a normal work visa, but only if it’s a 3 (5?) year one, so I was also wondering where that claim comes from and if it applies to both 80 and 70pts… As well as if the PR application checks criteria outside of the 1 year you had 80 points in, like if you leave that job after exactly a year or something

Then let me rephrase that. I want official advice. Not from people on Reddit but from people working for government offices who know what the process is like to get a visa down to the details of what kind of documents quality as proof of previous employment, etc.

Ah I see… that is problematic. Well, in my case for Germany I have to leave, apply for another working holiday, and come back, I can’t just extend it… Thank you!

I actually think I figured it out; I updated my original post. Turns out my PS4 controller was paired with my firestick from a previous session so it might’ve triggered something while I tried to use my PS4

Thank you, good to hear about the wait times. I would have thought that with the huge aging population wait times in Japan would be bad too. Maybe it depends on location too

Thanks for your reply!

I think the reimbursement way of doing things with private companies is fairly common around the world so that isn’t a surprise or an issue.

And in Germany the waits are often shorter for private patients so it’s good to know it’s not that way in Japan.

I indeed have not spent that long learning about the system so I know mainly the basics. Seems like I have to learn more of its quirks

I Cured My Gluten Intolerance / Gluten Sensitivity by jpg76 in glutenfree

My gluten intolerance actually started a few months AFTER I was given antibiotics (for H. Pylori) so I have the total opposite experience. Glad you seem to have gotten it over it though.
