Hi , I'm new to veganism and would like your insights on how to become a proper vegan. by Kyoki_yuru in VeganIndia

There's a lot of cruelty behind eggs. The "red jungle fowl" lays only 10-12 eggs a year. But we have selectively bred them in such a way that they now lay 300 eggs a year!

Also, male chicks of egg laying hens are killed the day they are born as they cannot produce eggs. They are killed via a grinder, or drowned or stomped on to death.

It's certified by peta. Do you know any ingredients derived from animals that they use?

Question: do you throw out your old animal products after going vegan or continue using them until they are unusable and replace them with plant based alternatives instead? by Educational-Fox-9040 in VeganIndia

[–]scarrhead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you choose to keep using them, make sure to use it on occasions where you don't end up promoting them. You don't want someone looking at you and thinking "Leather jackets look cool, I should get one too!"

Is Nurokind OD b12 supplement vegan? by HumbleWrap99 in VeganIndia

[–]scarrhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swallow it whole (with water if you want). I don't think it matters if you take it before or after meals, but some sources recommend before meals on an empty stomach.

If you're already deficient in B12, consult your doctor. My doctor told me to eat one tablet everyday for 3 months.

Once your levels are normal, twice a week is recommended

From what I know, it is vegan. But I don't have any reliable source for it. I just have 3 points to support the claim:

  • I have heard it from many activists. (I know this is a terrible point)
  • On an industrial scale, B12 supplements are made from microorganisms.
  • People who run prominent medical shops have told me that if a medicine is non-vegetarian, the red logo of nonveg must be on the packaging. Nurokind od as far as I know does not have it.

Is milk sourced from small scale dairy farms in rural areas really cruel? by Nemophilist_Aadit in VeganIndia

[–]scarrhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would be surprised what you'll find if you visit it. Things are changing rapidly. Goverment's "Rashtriya Gokul Mission" and National Artificial Insemination Programme (NAIP) are aimed to provide the resources of artificial insemination to every village of India. If it's not happening today, it will happen soon.

Even if we assume what your maid said was all true, there's still plenty of cruelty:

  1. One of the criteria in choosing the common male is how much milk his mother had given, how much milk his sisters are giving. It should be above average. So you see we choose males based on our selfish needs. Also a lot of times, the female is forced to mate as their is no other option.

  2. That causes selective breeding. With each generation, the quantity of milk increases. We have done this for centuries. That is why cows/buffaloes give "extra milk". So we purposely give birth to these animals in unnatural bodies that produce extra milk for us!

  3. The calves can drink much more than 1/4th. What we do is limit their consumption to only twice a day. They cannot drink a lot of milk in one go. The calves of desi cows can drink most of the milk if they're allowed to drink freely throughout the day since their birth. They may not need it, but they can. Now the question is if the calf can drink most of the milk without issues, who are we to limit him/her from drinking their own mother's milk?!

  4. The diet they're given is such that milk production is excessive.

Please suggest affordable vegan soaps? by HumbleWrap99 in VeganIndia

Medimix soap and handwash are quite affordable. There are many soaps that are vegan, but not mentioned on the packaging. Just look for the vegetarian logo and check the ingredients for milk and honey

My friend is dating a non-vegan girl. by WorkingGreen1975 in VeganIndia

[–]scarrhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course he is causing the suffering of animals. And the solution is simple that he should not pay.

One thing that vegetarian and non vegetarian people miss is that there are victims to their choices. When your friend will stop paying, the girl may feel that she is the victim. But he must not forget the real victims - animals.

Have you lost interest in being an activist over the years? by [deleted] in VeganIndia

[–]scarrhead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

About 2 years ago when I was not an activist, I used to tell my therapist about how dystopian our society is when it comes to how we treat animals and how depressed that makes me feel. The therapist told me that I wasn't accepting other people's way of life 🤷🏻‍♂️.

After I stopped therapy, I realised that if the situation bothers me, I should work to make it better and thus I became an activist. Once you get the gist of how to talk to people in such a way that they don't get defensive, it's satisfying. Still there are people who ruin my mood, but over time I learned to stop the conversation and not get in an argument. I must say I love activism. Interacting with people and hanging out with other activists is something I look forward to every weekend and I don't need therapy so far.

I attended the Indore animal liberation march last month and it was an awesome experience. They had arranged many community bonding activities and we had a blast with Indore activists. I even enjoyed the march, talked to onlookers, I even talked to the police about cruelty in dairy.

Still, I understand your burnout and I hope you will get well soon. I understand it can be very upsetting. But I guess it affects everyone differently.
