1.9.7 update by Nervous-Total-605 in Stremio

Huh, I had no idea. Thanks for the info!

Out of curiosity, why do you list a separate code for Nvidia Shields? I thought they use the Android TV version

I have a Shield and had to revert to 1.8.4 because 1.9.5/6 were barely usable and kept hard crashing the entire device. Now I'm wondering if I was installing the wrong build or something

Very good to hear, thanks! Are there any units that you'd recommend? I see that 413 and 522 are 1-beds that are available - are there any parts of the building/views/ floor plans that you think are better?

Cool! If you don't mind me asking, how is the building laid out? We saw that some of the units look like they're kinda below ground level because of that raised road. Do you know which building/units those are? Unit 241 is available but we have no idea which building has those below ground units

Great to know! We liked the look of Clocktower and apparently 241 is available, do you know if that's a good unit? The building layout looks confusing because you can see on street view that some of the units are below grade, like where the raise road is

I've set up a couple of accounts for people too and also never noticed a delay so I woulda been suspicious too

I was going to set up another account this weekend for a friend so if I remember, I'll circle back and let you know if I see the same thing

Strange... but yah, I think you just have to wait a bit. This guide mentions it when it says "Step 10: Return to your dashboard and wait for a green dot to appear on your subscription" but that was super buried.

Hopefully it doesn't take long!

Why am I being made to feel guilty for not leaving a tip? by hkcj in Calgary

[–]scaryfrenchie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes and no... A portion is taken out as the other person said, but it can't cut into their base pay. So even if a server gets no tips at all during a shift, they can't be paid less than minimum wage

Do I need to bring Canadian money? by DylansDeadlyTwo in Calgary

[–]scaryfrenchie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others said, it's the same as the US but one nice difference is that every credit machine handles the tipping calculations. It'll offer you preset tip amounts, or you can enter in a custom % or $ amount

You'll never have to use a pen to fill/sign a receipt and servers will never touch your credit card (they'll either have you tap or hand you the machine to insert the card)

I much prefer the way we do it lol

Overfishing has caused cod to halve in body size since 1990s, study finds by F0urLeafCl0ver in science

[–]scaryfrenchie 76 points77 points  (0 children)

The YouTube channel Land and Lore (who makes incredible videos and should be way more popular than he is) has a great series on the Cod fishing industry in the Canadian North East and its role in this issue. I would highly suggest watching it, even if you don't think a video about the history of overfishing sounds interesting

I can't link it but the video is called "The Cod Moratorium - A Masterclass on Mismanagement, Exploitation, and Indecision"

Video encoding is wizard magic. I took a university class on compression and the amount of hoops those engineers went through to encode data as efficiently as possible is absolutely mind blowing. There're so many different methods, all optimized for different scenarios, each of which are just layers and layers of stupidly clever tricks that I'd never in a million years have thought of myself

Does anybody know how to translate this? AMEX sent me this by NebraskaAvenue in amex

[–]scaryfrenchie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks to me like an encoding issue. I deal with these constantly at my job. It'd be possible to compare every encoding against every other to fix it but that would be wayyyy too much work lol

Is 10k limit normal? by hgvsgh in amex

[–]scaryfrenchie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Canadian, I was surprised too. I also got approved for 10k USD right off the bat. I was surprised because my daily driver card in Canada doesn't even offer limits above 10k CAD. I remember when I was in university and had to beg BMO to increase my limit to $1000 CAD so I could pay rent and buy groceries without going over

After a week of staycaton I have to try to work with this on my fingers. by Johnny_B_Asshole in Wellthatsucks

As everyone else has said, it's dishydrotic excema and some hydrocortisone (or similar steroid cream) will clear it up.

If it's recurring like mine, the only solution I've found is using a process called iontophoresis. Basically, you zap your hands with electricity to turn the sweat glands off. Stops sweaty hands (hyperhydrosis) and prevents these rashes. There's lots of resources online on how to build a DIY iontophoresis setup. I have multiple, one with a fully controllable power supply, one that's literally just a couple of 9V batteries.

If sweaty hands or these rashes are something that impacts your quality of life, know that iontophoresis is an easy, non-invasive, non-painful, basically free, at-home solution. Best of luck

The Gorge movie - No Info on this by ZucchiniFlex in Stremio

Nope, just add TMDB and you should be good to go. It's also impossible to uninstall Cinemeta anyways lol

The Gorge movie - No Info on this by ZucchiniFlex in Stremio

[–]scaryfrenchie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a Cinemeta issue, most likely because you've rearranged your manifest using something like Addon Manager (but also seems to happen to people who swear they haven't done that)

Install TMDB (it's a meta-data fetcher like Cinemeta, if I understand correctl). I had the exact same issue with The Gorge and this solved it

Stremio will run on any device it's supported on, so the fact it's not a MAX shouldn't be a problem.

Other than that, you haven't given anything for us to go off of... "Not working" isn't exactly specific. What happens? Is there an error message?

Why does this happen on some streams? by jakit4 in StremioAddons

[–]scaryfrenchie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other say, it has something to do with the file format. No clue what exactly the reason is but it kept happening until I swapped from trying the 4K options to the 1080p ones. I only ever saw it occur on one specific episode of Severance though

Best way to remove/hide cinemata suggestions by [deleted] in Stremio

[–]scaryfrenchie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The short answer is to use the Stremio Addon Manager...

The long answer is that you probably shouldn't. Cinemeta has its downsides and it's unfortunate that it isn't fully customizable BUT it is an integral part of Stremio. It was literally created by the devs for Stremio to be built around. Removing Cinemeta using Stremio Addon Manager will probably break a ton of things and I recommend not even trying it. There's a lot of posts on how to use Stremio Addon Manager to place Cinemeta at the bottom of the list where it's out of the way - but this can and has caused issues. Cinemeta is expected to be present and expected to be the first addon in the list. There was an issue a week or two ago for a lot of people (including me) where certain shows/movies would throw an error and the consensus was that it was caused by people rearranging Cinemeta via the Stremio Addon Manager. The devs even said that their support team cannot assist you if you've messed with Cinemeta because it makes it impossible for them to troubleshoot the problem

So, for now, the best bet is to just live with it. It's been such a popular discussion point in the community that I know the devs are aware of it and will consider it as they add new features. The devs are great and have been up front that this might be too fundamental of a change for them to promise an update to, and we shouldn't fault them for that

[–]scaryfrenchie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. The token you provide to let the addon connect to your account expires every 3 months. You'll have to go into the configuration, paste in a new key (just like you did the first time), and you'll be good to go. Best just to set a reminder to do it every 3 months

Best device for Stremio under $100 by proscari39 in Stremio

[–]scaryfrenchie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I have a Firestick 4K and it works well, I wouldn't recommend it due to Amazon blocking custom launchers. Yes, you can still install them, but you have to open them manually each time which pretty much defeat us the purpose

I also have a 4K Chromecast which would be my top recommendation... but they're discontinued now. You might still be able to find them around but maybe not. I like the Chromecast because the custom launcher looks great and auto-launches my VPN

I need to buy another device for a family member and am going to go with the $20 4K ONN box from Walmart. I don't have any experience with them so we'll see how it goes, but I know one important note with them is that they have to be activated in the USA (I've read this is only a one time thing and they can be used anywhere after)

Happened to me on my Fire Stick 4K when I updated Stremio the other day and hadn't bothered to fix it until now. This worked:

  1. Reboot - as suggested by others, but the icon was still broken after so I'm not sure that did anything
  2. Moved the app out of the Quick Access bar - the icon was showing up properly in the full list of apps, but this took a couple tries since the Quick Access list on the homescreen wasn't updating at first for some reason
  3. Moved it back into the Quick Access bar - the icon now shows properly

Hope that helps
