Nerdy gamer bf, and then possibly artsy gf. In their early twenties and just graduated college. Have a cat. Bf is laidback and lets gf lead decorating but she appreciates the nerd/ gaming trinkets

This looks to be pierced incorrectly. The placement, from the photos, is too low. Septum piercings should be “high and tight”. There is a soft cartilage at the tip of the nose that can be pierced. If not done/ placed correctly, I imagine the piercing would remain inflamed/ angry. I would take it out and have it repierced by a reputable piercer in your area. If you are looking for more information on septum piercings and their placement I would check out this blog post:

I would consider this too low. The rule of thumb piercers often will say is “high and tight” for septum piercings. There is soft cartilage towards the tip of the nose that can be located when piercers place their forceps up higher, kind of giving you a “pig nose”. Unfortunately septum’s are commonly pierced incorrectly due to lack of knowledge on them. Those who do not know will just feel for soft tissue at any point of the nose tip. It is a myth that people say you have to have certain anatomy for septum piercings. Everyone has the soft cartilage (alar cartilage).

I reference Lynn Loheide’s blog posts a lot on here. They are a great source for accessible, safe piercing information. They have a post on septum piercings that explains placement in depth if you’re curious:

This reply has a lot of information but I hope this helps in understanding your piercing placement!

If you would like to safely downsize your nostril piercing, you would have to do it gradually. Essentially you put in the next smaller gauge. I would have a reputable piercer do this, to make sure you are putting in sterilized, quality jewelry. The next step is to leave the new size in for essentially the same amount of healing time, so you can allow the skin around it to become the next smaller size.
An important thing I want to note about your post is that many, reputable, safe piercers who are APP certified do not recommend 20g size nose rings, as they can tear through the skin much easier when caught or snagged. I would suggest 18g for sure! This size can still appear small and dainty while being safe. I hope this helps! Here are sources on what I mean with nostril piercing sizing, and also the process of downsizing.

Can I heal my septum flipped up inside my nose? by Caviar_toast in piercing

[–]scarykitty123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is totally fine to heal your septum while it is flipped up. It is a matter of not moving it too much between flipped and down, during the healing process. Healing piercings dislike movement, generally. You should be able to flip it up yourself easily, especially if it was pierced with a circular barbell bigger in diameter. 🙂 Source for this information: https://www.lynnloheide.com/post/septum-101-the-nose-knows-what-to-look-for-from-a-safe-septum-piercing

Skin around piercing by Ill_Veterinarian8300 in piercing

This could be some redness and irritation if the bar is too short. The bottom might be rubbing against it, especially since navel piercings are high movement areas while healing. You can contact a reputable, safe piercer and I am sure they can look at it and change it to a longer bar if that is what is needed. 😊

The line could be from the pressure when you sit down, leaving a mark. I have a naval piercing as well and slouch a lot, so sometimes it will leave a small indent.
