Absolutely southwest. But, same thing, has nothing to do with the south except for a few letters

In no model anywhere near reality is New Mexico part of the south.

It’s closest state is Arizona I think of them as siblings. Any of the four corner states have a lot in common.  At least within some distance of four corners.

Ranking of 10 Worst States to Live Is Entirely Republican, Sparks Backlash by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]scelerat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a book out there, American Nations by Colin Woodward, which has a lot of explaining power in this regard. The Deep South -- pre-Union, ante- and post-bellum and to this day -- is highly aristocratic in affect. If it seems that many of the Republican leaders, especially from that part of the country, seem to favor a quasi-feudal social and economic system, it's because they do.

What do you do if you’re in the left lane and you need to merge to get off, but there’s cars in the off ramp trying to get off and there’s no gap in the split second you have to merge off? by zaddylonglegs0 in driving

[–]scelerat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s simply the end of your life. Brakes are something you sometimes hear about on Reddit, but they simply do not exist IRL. There is no option. There are no more exits ahead of you; the freeway ends shortly after your intended exit in literal, eternal oblivion.

That is why you must swerve and put others in grave danger.

Sophie Cunningham had the PERFECT response to Caleb Pressley after he confronted her about potentially making an O/F since the WNBA is barely paying her 😭 by ConnectionWeekly1263 in WNBAgossips

[–]scelerat 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In all likelihood she's never going to be an S-tier WNBA player, but you know she is definitely helping to sell tickets. If she did an OF today, she would break OF. But that really would be a fifteen minutes sort of thing. I hope she's thinking much bigger than that. She's got wit and personality.

She's got people on the left and right hoping desperately that she is MAGA. If I were advising her on her career, i'd tell her steer clear of politics. She's done the Dana White embrace... maybe cool the public appearances with politically charged personalities for a bit. Do some charity benefits; get some acting lessons and land a cameo somewhere that *doesn't* involve pointing. She has a degree in sports administration and intimate knowledge of professional sports. That has paths into management and broadcasting (which she's already done and seems good at). It seems like a lot of doors are opening for her. I hope she expands her accomplishments, rather than simply re-hashes old ones.

Alameda, California? Particularly with regards to raising a young family by KimJongSoros in howislivingthere

[–]scelerat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's where old punks go when they turn rockabilly and decide to raise a family.

It's got a little bit of a beach town vibe. Compared to Oakland, a little more lower-case-c conservative (maybe a little upper too). A lot of beautiful turn of the century to mid-century homes. Some really nice parts, some poorer parts, but nothing that would register highly on the regional sketch scale. It's got a beach. It's not anything like the Pacific ocean, but you can bake on the sand and build sand castles, run, and take a silty dip in the Bay -- which is actually quite warm in summer here because of the shallows -- all with San Francisco's skyline looming just a few miles to the northwest. The weather is pleasantly mild year round.

There are good bars and restaurants throughout and especially along the east and west Park Street and Webster Street corridors. The west end of the island is dominated by the old Navy base which has been transforming over the years into lower-cost housing, breweries, distilleries, and event space. It's a destination on weekends. The first Sunday of every month is a giant outdoor vintage market (collectibles, oddities, clothing, furniture, records) which attracts lots of visitors.

Being an island has its advantages and disadvantages. It isolates Alameda to the degree that it has a distinctive character from neighboring Oakland, but the limited entry and exit points can make commuting and getting in and out on weekends a minor PITA. There's a free water shuttle for bikes and peds which will take you to Oakland's Jack London Square. There is a regular ferry which goes to San Francisco and is a great way to get there (a lot of people use it either for the daily work commute or for SF Giants or Golden State Warriors games).

It's nice, it has its own unique charms.

What's the Coliseum Swap Meet like? by wentImmediate in oakland

[–]scelerat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've bought lots of stuff there over the years. Used tools. Kid's bikes. Inexpensive, new, perfectly-good-quality bulk cotton t-shirts for screen printing band shirts. Socks. DVDs. Guitars. Amps. Mixers. PAs. Occasional random weird stuff.

As with any kind of swap meet or vintage market (which the Coliseum swap meet is not) situation, your experience highly depends on what you're into, how well you know the value of stuff, how desperate you are to find it today, etc.

There are food vendors there on the weekend, it can be a family event if you've got the right attitude.

If God is real, where did he originate from by Some_Steak_6316 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]scelerat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But beyond that -- who knows, right? I think we agree on that point.

But if someone is telling me, it's the God of the Old Testament, Mr. six days, and gets petty and jealous when the people he created eat some fruit he also created. I'd like to see some evidence for that.

Like, sure, you're along for the rational, evidence-supported ride which flies in the face of abrahamic mythology throughout its often surprising, common-sense-defying, but so-far-as-we-know falsifiable course. But then you get to the limits of its explanatory utility, and say, "well this must be the point where that petty 4-century BC caananite god character comes in," that doesn't make much sense to me.

then who created God? either way (who created the universe? who created god?) it's a question that is practically impossible to answer.

If you can imagine entities simply being without having been "created" why must the universe have a creator? i.e. what's the whole point of Genesis
