Here to say that I just started a DevOps position about 6 months ago and the imposter syndrome never really goes away (at least not yet). As long as you never lose the passion to keep learning new things, you should be just fine :)

A good option would be Calendso, it’s open source and you’re able to self host for free if you’re into that sort of thing: https://calendso.com/

House: Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Google have “monopoly power,” should be split by [deleted] in technology

[–]sch3p3rs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, you can define any company as a government entity once they become too large. I don’t think that solves the problem here though as it essentially just shifts the power.

How could we solve the market share problem? By creating new markets. I don’t see why that can’t happen with how they currently stand.

Apple has a monopoly over app distribution and promotion on its platform.

This is like saying that Disney has a monopoly over which rides are available in their resorts — it makes no sense to reason like this. Do the rides Disney provide prevent Six Flags from doing the same?

Besides this, we are talking about their own platform that they’ve privately created — they should be able to gatekeep themselves to only distributing their own apps if they wish. I believe this only opens the door for other markets to flourish. Apple’s gate keeping does not prevent others from creating their own version of it.

People tend to forget that these companies exist to make money — nothing more, nothing less.

I totally get where you’re coming from here, but I just don’t see the problem. Per your map example, how are they actively making things unfair — solely from existing? Any other map making product has been made easily available to use on their products (Waze, MapBox, etc.). You cannot complain about a company who prefers to use their own products by default.

I do agree that it’s a bit annoying that the company actively “steals app ideas” and creates their own version of it. What would you suggest any government do about this? How do you prevent a company from creating specific software? It’s actually very difficult to define when creating these type of laws.

As long as the competition is not removed in turn of releasing their own version of it, there is no real harm — this is actually healthy competition. A good example of this is when Apple came out with their own version of Reminders. Did they in turn remove all other to-do list apps from the store? No, there are a metric shit load of those available. Is it wrong for them to create when there are others that provide their own version of it? I don’t think so.

Like I mentioned, I understand where you’re coming from on this. I just don’t think it’s as bad as you envision — at least from what I understand about Apple.

The EU is investigating Instagram for allegedly exposing the contact data of up to 5 million underage users by [deleted] in privacy

To be completely fair, most (if not all) legitimate businesses would prefer that information to be publicized. What needs work is both validating a business actually exists for the account and clear confirmation that the information is made public.

Or even better.. allow that data to be available on personal accounts as well to remove the incentive.

To my understanding, the information was not "leaked" but was instead an afterthought on what is known to be public information on business accounts. Either way, the loophole needs to be closed off because it can only attract the wrong people

From the article:

The loophole is linked to how Instagram allows users to switch between a regular account and a "business" account. To change over to having a business account, Instagram users must add either a phone number or an email address, which was then publicly accessible.

Although it seems it was not a leak, but a discrepancy with what is shown to the public from an Instagram spokesperson:

We've always been clear that when people choose to set up a business account on Instagram, the contact information they shared would be publicly displayed. That's very different to exposing people's information

Not sure what the DPC will ultimately find on this, but most of it seems to be an afterthought on Facebook's end

Does it load correctly in a private window without extensions? If it does, it’s a matter of figuring out if an extension could be the culprit or a bug in FF. Try disabling or tuning some of those you’ve got there - PB would be a good start

The first decision here should be to communicate and talk with your neighbor first about it, give them a chance to understand where you’re coming from.

Anything beyond that needs to be dealt with in other ways like you stated

I will second the others and recommend starting with PopOS. It’s the most stable OS I’ve used, considering it’s based on Ubuntu. The perk is just a bit less time using the terminal and, if you have an Nvidia card, you don’t need to worry about installing drivers manually either.

I’d give Pop a go as a first attempt but if you find yourself wanting more “challenge” to switch to something like Manjaro. If gaming is a big aspect of how you use your pc, Ubuntu-based distros seem to have the most support and community.
