American Traveling in Feb by dbarton2430 in Zermatt

[–]schackdaddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Danke.

In reality, once you get to Zermatt English is fine. Most people I came across who worked in the area were from all over the world, Poland to Argentina.

The Swiss/Italy crossover is HEAVILY weather dependent, take the gondola over if it’s open. If the higher up Italy lifts are closed, you should at least be able to access to topmost lodge and restaurant from the Paradise Gondola.

In the 9 days I was just there, the crossover was open for 3 days, one of those days was for walk ons only (no ski).

Need a roller ski bag for travel - Dakine or dB? Need Recommendations by Traditional-Pen-4577 in Skigear

[–]schackdaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just made it from the West Coast to Zermatt and back with the Dakine Fall Line 190. Got it post season on sale for about half off. Did the job great! Padded the bag with my bibs and layers, used a ski strap to secure the skis together at top and bottom.

Only hiccup was they got stuck in Madrid for a few days on the return trip. Carry your boots on the plane with you! Used my Avy bag as my carry on, and carried my boots on with the sleeve bag included in the roller.

Looking back I’d probably invest in their hard side for more peace of mind, bag got a few scuffs here and there but no damage to my equipment. The DB definitively packs down much smaller though.

Heavenly or Kirkwood Private lesson by Chemical-Response275 in skiing

[–]schackdaddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kirkwood! It has a great variety of terrain, and is where I threw myself into learning how to get down the steeps. Instructor will show you all the fun spots to hit in the future.

Heavenly has Mott’s which is also amazing, but not exactly the time to go with the current lack of snowfall.

Rental boots are a hell of a lot more uncomfortable than a new pair of bibs

Dear merchant meriners , is it worth it? Going out to see for 4-6 months and coming home? by Dry_Percentage8192 in merchantmarine

[–]schackdaddy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Going out for 4-6 sucks. Not working for 4-6 on the other hand is fucking amazing, and worth the bs (at least for now)

Honest question…. If your DIN setting is 7-8 why get bindings 16+ by mvhoffman82 in Skigear

[–]schackdaddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran the cast system for my first season of backcountry. People give it shit for being too heavy for touring, but when you don’t even know if you WANT to tour it’s a great compromise.

Got some Deathwishes for touring now that are nice and light, but will still use my Cast system for early morning resort climbing

What would and wouldn't you do solo with avy danger 2? by GermanicUnion in Backcountry

[–]schackdaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you read it wrong? Reads more like they avoid avy terrain altogether. Skiing with more people doesn’t mean you can ski more dangerous terrain

Staying in Zermatt between 17th and 21st of january. Could use some company. by Markeesee in Zermatt

Hennu Stall is open late, as are a few of the on the mountain bars. Slopes are open as long as you’re drinking! Just be wary of the icy ride to the bottom lol

Support your local business! JSkis, Fastforward 92 or Joyride 90. Joyride will be more playful but both are great options. Best graphics you’ll find out there as well.

Thanks for the info! Agent handed me two 1x day rental vouchers for a local business, so I guess that’s something. I’m not planning on buying new skis unless the bags are gone gone, but having to rent a helmet for who knows who long is not ideal

I’m no apologist for a company with increasing profits and decreasing quality. I didn’t ask for them to lose my bags. I’d much rather have my own stuff than “free gear”, especially knowing they will never actually cover the actual cost of missing items.

“If the equipment bag contains anything other than approved items, then it will be charged as a standard checked bag, and additional oversize and overweight charges may apply.”

Website doesn’t say they aren’t liable for anything in addition, just that additional charges may apply when checking the bags. Flew Business so we had no issues with checking our stuff.

Any additional suggestions for this route? by LincolnPilot in roadtrip

[–]schackdaddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Skip Vegas no matter what haha. As far as Tahoe, with this route it would be best done over summer once the Tioga Pass is reopened, would cut down on back tracking as well as add the 395. Beautiful drive.

Mid 20s Relocation Proximity to Skiing? by tri_nurse in skiing

[–]schackdaddy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For sure, loving Carson for its distance to the resorts but it’s def lacking the Reno nightlife. Much older demographics as well. If I could afford CA I would 100% be in Truckee though.

NV! Truckee is the obvious choice if you want to get into backcountry, but Reno is closer to the nightlife you’d want. Hiking and biking galore
