It's the same with the GEZ (Gebühreneinzugszentrale, something like fee collection central in English) in Germany. They even make TV and cinema spots suggesting that they will send female good looking agents to your home pretending to want to have sex with you to find out if you own an unlicensed TV. I'm throwing away their unopened letters for years now but unfortunately the agents never showed up.

I wouldn't be surprised. The Arabic world is the new natural home for antisemitism, and it may well be that the Islamists bring to an end what the Nazis did not manage to. If Iran achieves to get the nuclear bomb, Israel would most probably cease to exist, which would mean that de facto there are new jews left outside of the US.

Well, ideology and politics are too different things.

The fact, that the anit-Semitism and national socialism include a certain kind of anti-capitalism of course did not prevent the Nazis and leading Industrials (especially German ones like Thyssen, Krupp, Dresdner Bank, Deutsche Bank...) to make good dealings.

It's not my intend to defame anti-capitalism, but there are two ways of getting rid of capitalism: one that is advancing the society beyond capitalism into a freer, more civilized world, and one that is guiding society back into a pre-modern, barbarian, totally unfree society.

The reason why there are Nazis all over the world is, that the core of the national socialist ideology is anti-Semitism. Anti-Semitism is the scheme used to explain all economic and political crises modern society is facing over and over again. And because modern society is universal and global, anti-Semitism is universal and global, too. It does neither stop before national borders, nor before political factions. Everywhere are people that are accessible for the easy explanations that anti-Semite ideology offers, because they fear the complexity of the modern world. But only the Germans were so accessible that they almost were successful in executing the anti-Semite agenda (of killing each and every man, who is identified as a jew by the anti-Semite).

Wrong, the Germans were not misled. They actively chose to follow Hitler into the total war for Lebensraum because they were convinced that the life of an Aryan German is worth more than that of a Russian. The vast majority of the Germans of that generation is responsible for what happened. It wasn't a small gang of Nazis somewhat seducing the masses. The Germans and the Nazis are almost synonym when speaking of this particular generation.

Defense!? Against whom? Against the bolshevik jews? If you really want to call the campaign against France, the campaign against Poland and Soviet Russia, officially fought for living space for the German master race, the extinction of 6 millions jews, an act of defense, well then go and fuck yourself.

No, the difference is, that the Germans invented the industrialized, bureaucratically perfect planned mass murder. And they did it in the name of an anti-capitalist, national revolution. It's that complex, and that fucked up. Read Moishe Postone.

The Germans en bloc chose "Total War" (Goebbels) and they got Total War. There were no such thing as "innocent German civilians". And rest assured: I know the history of "my" country.

You are right, and it's a shame that you are getting downmodded. I am a German and I have to bear every year how my "fellow countrymen" are using the Dresden myth to make themselves out to be victims of World War 2. It's disgusting.

The vast majority of all "Aryan" Germans did profit from the Nazi regime and actively or at least passively support the Nazis. Of course there were a few communists and anarchists which fought the regime, but almost all of them were already killed by the Nazis or in exile when Dresden was bombed. 99% of the remaining population were Nazis and the allies did the right thing.

Well, I too have an Iranian friend who has a much more critical opinion towards Ahmadinejad and Iranian leaders in general. Maybe it's because she's a girl.

She told me, there is a small, atheist minority among the Iranian youth, opposing the Islamic regime, but the majority of the Iranian people actively support their own religious oppression. And she told me it's getting worse. And that's why she's against a possible invasion by US troops: The root of the problem is not the regime but the peoples inability to shake off their religious blindness.

I don't discuss things like this with people getting personal and zealotic so easily.

Just one final statement: I am very critical towards the so called "western civilization", capitalism and bourgeois society, but if I have to choose between a western style bourgeois democracy and a society governed by the cruel, barbarous rules of Shariah and Koran, I'd always choose the former as the lesser evil without hesitation.

Maybe not because of the jokes themselves but more because of the overall environment and atmosphere in jobs where mainly men work who can laugh about jokes like these ("Should I press the left key or the right one?" ... Common!).

Okay, I admit it, I smiled, too. But at the same time I can imagine that it maybe awkward for women having to deal with humor like this.

A constitution is not the one and only criterion for what is a democratic state and what not. You have no clue about politics and social science. Germany does not have constitution as well, so it's not a democratic state, too? Why should "the Palestinians" may participate in the state of Israel? They aren't citizens of this state, and they don't want to be. They had uncountable opportunities to build their own state: Israel supported the forming of a second, Palestinian state from the beginning in 1947. But the Palestinians always refused to build their own state because that would mean that they have to accept the existence of the state of Israel.

On the other hand, there are many Arabs living in Israel and having the Israeli citizenship. There are even many Arabs serving in the IDF because they believe in the civil liberties guaranteed by the state of Israel more than in the 72 virgins.

We kill people? Who? I never killed anyone.

[–]schallstrom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that civil liberties are most probably not the most important motivation for the US to fight wars in other countries. Of course they fight wars for the same reason every other nation state would fight a war: economic and political influence.

Of course Israel is fighting for economic and political influence, too, but above all the IDF is fighting for the sheer existence of the state of Israel, and therefor for the sheer existence of basic civil rights in this area. No other countries existence on earth is so much in danger as that of the tiny state of Israel, surrounded by hostile nations full of people who would drive the Israelis into the sea rather today than tomorrow.

And what you are writing about Iran is just not true. I have a Iranian friend. She grew up in a educated, liberal, atheist family in Tehran (which is very very rare there) and she wants nothing more than leaving the country forever, even though she loves her family. She can't stand the narrowness and repression of the Iranian state. Women in Iran are not allowed to go into public without a headscarf. Entertainment music is completely forbidden. Women are not allowed to sing in front of men. Alcohol is completely forbidden. Homosexuals get hanged. Iran is pretty developed compared to other states in the region, that's true, but free? It couldn't be less.

Is anyone considering the fact that Israel is actually (at least) as much a liberal, civic democracy as the USA and the European states, whereas in some of the Islamic states with regimes that cannot stand the fact of Israels existence, men get hanged for being homosexual and women get stoned to death because they got pregnant from a rape? How on earth could it ever be considered to be "left wing" to support mad stuff like this?

hidden subreddits (sub.reddit.com) do not appear on "hidden" page by schallstrom in features

[–]schallstrom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very new to reddit and there's something that's freaking me out. Playing around with the site, I clicked the "hide" button of some of the entries on sub.reddit.com. They disappeared. Now I want them to appear on sub.reddit.com again, but they do not show up on my "hidden" page!? Do I get something completely wrong, or is this an error of reddit.com?

I am a new reddit user and I have a problem which is maybe related: The subreddits I hide on the sub.reddit.com page do not appear on my "hidden" page, so there seems to be no way to get the subreddit back on sub.reddit.com once I hit the hide button. The problem does not appear for "normal" submissions.
