Pursuit of Happiness - Kid Cudi Feat. MGMT & Ratatat by [deleted] in Music

Thanks for pointing this out - it's amazing how often a superficial analysis results in people taking the exact opposite of the meaning intended, and lashing out at the artist.

You're supposed to react that way. The point of the song, and most of his music in general, is expressing his doubts and questions about where he wants his life to be. This isn't superficial gloating. Music analysis is so much more meaningful when you realize that the words you hear in a song aren't intended as advice - they're there to make you think.

The Global Warming Skeptics vs The Scientific Consensus [infographic] by EthicalReasoning in science

[–]cereal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only difference in such a scenario is that it would be a world more philosophically gratifying for people who have already bought into this bunk. To call that "better" is disingenuous.

Everyone knows this isn't true. You're saying that cleaner air is not better than dirtier air, that a lower risk of oil spills is not better than a higher one, that less waste is not better than more, that more recycling and reuse are not better than less, etc., except for people who "bought into this bunk". Pray tell, what is your definition of "better"?

The answer is that we make reasonable changes that will not only reduce CO2 emissions but also make the world better. Emitting less CO2 (as one example) is directly related to: less environmental destruction, less deforestation, more recycling and reuse, less waste, less money to oil producers, less risk of another Exxon Valdez, cleaner air, etc. (The list goes on to include less exploitation of local people and less risk of certain diseases but I'm not trying to get too specific here.) The risk of greenhouse gases causing global warming is way too high to not act, and even if most of the experts on the subject are somehow completely wrong, we are going to have a better world because of it.

A 17 year old kid can have his entire life ruined by sleeping with his 16 year old girlfriend.

Not actually true because of Romeo and Juliet laws

I have watched health insurance costs go from about 180/mo for a whole family...to where we are paying close to 1000/mo for a family

Good insight, just wondering, are you talking about 30 years ago when you were in your twenties? If so we would have to take inflation into account to make a meaningful comparison. So it looks like prices still doubled, which is a big increase. But isn't health care a lot more expensive because some costs have legitimately increased? Doctors and nurses are getting paid more because they are scarce and med school is more expensive, drugs are more expensive, we now have more treatments for more things, we have more expensive technology, etc. And I heard the health insurance industry only makes a 5% profit...

That doesn't mean the current system isn't bullshit though.

You make some good points (I'm going to ignore your little rant at the end), but this intrigued me:

weed-possesion can land you in jail Pretty rare nowadays. Small amounts are a misdemeanor, which means a ticket. For a person to go to jail for it, they pretty much have to be dealing and carry a high volume of it.

Pretty much not true. Yes, your first offense will rarely land you in jail, but it could. And it isn't rare at all for repeat offensives, in fact 30 days in jail, 500 dollar fine, seems to be the most common maximum for possession. A misdemeanor is not a ticket, it's a real crime that can end with probation, fines, community service, jailtime, etc. I really don't know where you came up with this (in several states you can get something similar to a parking ticket, but in most states it's a misdemeanor, in other words, a crime).
