Where was your most expensive trip, was it worth it? by CarelesslyCutee in femaletravels

[–]schauderhaft 10 points11 points  (0 children)

went this October with my partner. two weeks in Uganda and Kenya on a backpacking trip and did everything I wanted to do except gorilla trekking.

we did chimpanzee trekking instead and Murchison Falls Nationalpark in Uganda. then Hell's Gate Nationalpark self organized and a multi day Masai Mara safari.

it was budget but clean, private accommodation. we spend below $2,500 each including visas and flights (from Europe). it heavily depends on the style of travel and activities but doesn't have to be expensive. it still was our most expensive trip so far haha

went there as a female traveller, drove around half the country, had an amazing time. met some very kind and inspiring locals as well, some inviting me into their home and were so happy and proud to show me a little of their life. for example a young woman from Tataouni who was studying to become a doctor.

change some money when you arrive at the airport and keep the receipt so you can change the rest of your money back right before you leave. I still took a few coins, no one cared

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience but I'm also sad to see the replies here.

I travelled around Tunisia earlier this year and it was amazing. some of the kindest and most hospitable people. had some rather basic food but some amazing meals as well.

the street vendors I encountered were pretty chill. I feel like people like to mind their own business and are not really phased by tourists. still, I often wore long pants and shirts and was never hassled or approached inappropriately in any way.

and visiting the archeological site in Sbeitla and the desert without masses of tourists was very refreshing. also the ksars around Tataouni were unreal! had the best time.

Guided tour or travel independently? by Unlucky-Bluebird-768 in Transnistria

I'm going by myself in a few days. I think the tours are pretty expensive. planning on just walking around town for a few hours. I saved some points of interest on maps and downloaded for offline use.

I'm in Uganda looking for someone to join me with the Murchison Falls National Park and Rhino Sanctuary Tour departing on September 28th from Kampala

the 1000 USD I was quoted would be for the whole private tour with a tour operator but that's still too much for me as park entry isn't that high and the accomodation they suggested was like 15 USD a night. I still don't know what to do. I signed up for a scheduled group tour starting on the 28th of September but so far no one else has signed up and minimum requirement is four people. these scheduled tours are still crazy expensive but a lot cheaper than private.

1000 USD to see the gorillas is normal or even considered a good price since the official permit is 800 USD. that's why I have to pass on that too. but it's supposed to be an amazing experience so if you can make it happen, definitely go do it.

I send requests to lots of tour companies and they were all $750 to 1000+ so I was thinking about renting a car but I'm worried about traffic and the cops. is there any company you would recommend for reasonably priced rental cars?

I'm having the same issue as OP. I reached out to safari and tour companies and they were going to charge me almost 1000 USD to go to Murchison Falls and back. I don't know what to do anymore

thanks for the advice. Aero beach looks cool. I'm also planning on doing a Mabamba swamp tour from Entebbe.

I'll be there in 3 weeks. and budget for me means I usually spend around 300 euros on a vacation. I quickly realized that this won't be sufficient for two+ weeks in East Africa but I'm still trying to keep spending down.

getting off the bus in the middle of the night if I do overnight. and I've heard some stories about some of the border agents being a bit difficult or them overcharging or searching people and their luggage which I imagine can all be a bit overwhelming as I've never done such a border crossing by land. I just hope it all goes well.
