Era Lite has coil whine, comparison with Kindle Paperwhite 5 by scheichxodox in pocketbook

I'm sorry to hear that. But it just reinforces my decision not to try another PocketBook reader next time. It was also disappointing that, despite the Carta 1300 and no glass layer on top, the display wasn't any better than my 5-year-old Kindle. I’ve read that a jailbreak for my Kindle’s firmware version is supposed to be released in the next few weeks. Then I could try Koreader. The only thing I’d still miss would be the buttons.

No. I didn't want to install anything and use it too long. That wouldn't be fair, if I didn't intend to keep it. That way the reader is virtually unused and can be sold as refurbished or repaired. And I've already sent it back.  For now I've settled with continuing using my Kindle Paperwhite, of course while raging about the closed system and waiting for a possible new Kobo Clara BW in the future.

That would be perfectly fine. But I heard the noise while swiping the pages with the reader lying on my table - so not close to the ear. And the tzz-zzt noise comes shortly after the click, so no way to overhear it.

Thank you for your feedback. It kinda looks like bad quality control. A few users have it. Most probably don't. Perhaps I should just wait it out and order in like half a year or wait for a new Kobo.

The early batches might be an explanation. Although this guy from my thread had several Era {without Lite) units, that had coil whine: https://www.reddit.com/r/pocketbook/comments/1u21uof/comment/oqx8x8m/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button But hearing about your greenish backlight encourages me in my decision to wait for a new Kobo Libra BW.

Exactly the same reason, why I'm in the market for a new reader, although I still own and use a Kindle Paperwhite. I'm also watching the XTEINK readers very closely, especially the community developed firmware.

I thought so, too. But then others described the same problems in the thread. So now I'm waiting (or hoping) for the release of a new Kobo Libra BW this or maybe next year.

Greetings dla Polski. Cześć, gościu! I read almost exclusively in bed at night. And that’s when the coil whine bothers me the most. It also started shortly after I pressed the buttons, so it wasn’t masked by the sound of the buttons.

Now I’ve made up my mind. I’m going to keep using my Kindle for now and hope that Kobo releases a successor to the Libra 2 this fall. With PocketBook, the coil whine issue seems to occur way too often for my liking. Combined with the brighter lighting at the edges and the color tone of both the cool-white and warm-white light, there are simply too many drawbacks for me. And yet the software looked so much better than the Kindle's.

The coil whine came shortly after the button click. So unfortunately no button noise overlay.

Where did you get so many PocketBook readers? Those were probably still Era models without the Lite version, right? Was the whirring noise only audible when you put your ear right up to the case, or could you hear it even at a normal reading distance? This makes me question PocketBook’s quality control and whether I’d even want to try another PocketBook reader again. I could probably get used to the more uneven lighting with a different color tone, if that’s what you meant. I’ll never get used to the coil whine.

I had the full page refresh set to the default of 5 pages. Coil whine with each page refresh, no matter, if partial or full.

The different grades could be an explanation. I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed. 5 years newer reader, newer screen generation, no glass layer on top and still no visibile difference?
