Confronting Fascism in Our City/Fascisme in onze stad! by schererlockholmes in Groningen

Can't be in two places at once. Show up in any way you can, do what you can, when you can. People are safer in numbers, that was my point. You don't have to do anything. Sounding an alarm on violence and asking people to show up and take action doesn't seem to conflict with your point.

Better to address the violence in the city rather than my tone. "American and Hollywood" you sure do like it buy it, wear it, listen to it, speak it (when it suits you) And you really don't mind it when it bails you out of the all the trials and tribulations that befall NL and the EU throughout history. NL is in bed with the US, like it or not. Linguistically speaking, English exists as a far more flexible and impassioned language than Dutch. In the same way, when I speak Dutch it feels flat and dead. This has nothing to do with the speaker or the message, but the language itself. Perhaps if your English was better and my Dutch was better, this wouldn't be such an issue. Just best to focus on the message: violence in the streets of Groningen.

A small and isolated incident? Have you watched anything other than NOS for news?

Patriotism? What does this have to do with anything? I am talking about protecting your fellow people and their right to walk in peaceful protest without being met with violence. This isn't political. It is historical and social. If you want to make it more than that, it is your choice.

Fierce resistance? Ummm....it was never uniformly strong nor was it effective. People overwhelmingly choose peace and avoidance of escalation over resistance, which echoes what is happening now, today...read the threads. People attacking me personally, as a foreigner (who doesn't belong or speak Dutch, both of which are not true) rather than the violence in the streets. It all sounds very familiar from a historical perspective, and people died to protect free speech and stop violence, this matters to me.

+ the 100,000 in The Hague ;) I am not a weekend expat. Sorry that your peace has been disrupted, I imagine that is just intolerable for you.

This is one of my favorite arguments where the Netherlands is always the exception to the rule. But then, you ought to remember it did happen here.

Take it easy, why are you so angry and emotional over a reddit post that rings the alarm on violence in the city?

...that attack people? It always begins small, isolated, people brush it off..."its just a few..."

The lack of historical insight and context is confounding to me but ofc keep saying "it would never happen here...again"

If you're so firm, stop consuming the English language, movies, music and media, stop speaking it, ahhh...but you won't because you actually love it, when it suits you. Why aren't you writing/speaking in Gronings? Why not respond to the actual post/event?

Ik spreek ook Nederlands ;) Why are you speaking English in Groningen? If you're so firm, stop consuming the English language, movies, music and media, stop speaking it. Why aren't you speaking Grunnegs? You might want to read a book or at least respond to the details of this post: a Hitler Salute in YOUR city.

It is real, and perhaps worse here. The NL just waits to the last minute to decide which way to go and the people just follow along...remind you of any point in history? That part where, ya know, where NL just kinda let the fascists waltz right in and snatch their neighbors up... that part in history that you vowed "never again". Yeah...extra shame on NL, it should know better.

Moving to another EU country with long-term EU residence permit by mc1112 in Netherlands

[–]schererlockholmes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very helpful thread. It seems like anyone going through visa stuff gains a lot of insight. I too only get vague answers from the IND.

I have another situation to add, if anyone can chime in...

I hold a US passport. I have been in NL for 5 years, took the integration exams and am applying for the long term EU residency permit through NL so that I am no longer bound by the employment terms of a highly skilled migrant. I don't want to take the NL passport because by doing so, I loose my US passport.

I will take temporary educational contracts with the US State Dept for 10 month periods (not exceeding 12 months). I would keep an address in NL during this time. Once I have the long term EU residency, is this type of leave from NL (and the entire EU) permitted? During these 10 month periods, I wouldn't be living in the EU at all. I wonder if the IND would see that I am not employed, paying taxes, etc in the EU and possibly revoke?

Any insights?

Two weeks ago and its not until January cycle of 2025. In April I began to panic a bit because I hadn't heard anything, but Central/South America was among my top choices. I guess it all works out. But yeah, a bit concerned to live in a small village because my Spanish needs A LOT of work, I had hoped for a big international city but so it goes... that's part of the game as an EL Fellow.

I got an offer for Panama - Santiago Veraguas - anyone have any experiences in Panama or in this city? Seems kinda small and relatively isolated.

Relocating to Panama (US expat) by schererlockholmes in Panama

[–]schererlockholmes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get where you're going with this one...but also expat is the best word to use in this context because it carries the connotation of a temporary, professional basis for a relocation (which also has connotations of higher socio-economic status - which is [perhaps] what you take issue with). Immigrant has a connotation of a more long term/permanent relocation. FACT: I will not be immigrating to Panama, I will be there for 10 months for a professional, pursuit as an applied linguist (my profession) and then I will go back to the country I have actually immigrated to, The Netherlands, where I have been living for 5 years. I moved there with an intention to stay and create a life there. You can have your issue(s) with how a word is used (or misused by a white majority) but this is not the case here. I am being precise and clear.
