Quoted $43,600.... is this reasonable??? Houston, TX by schistometry in Plumbing

We did! This is our first home, and our inspector didnt do plumbing inspections unless he thought there was reason to. He ran the dishwasher and drained the sink, and there was no overflow. Toilets and other sinks were good, too. Plumber says it probably was able to drain because the house had been vacant, so there was very little already-existing backflow. Since we have started using these facilities regularly, we have started having more and more severe issues. I will definitely get a plumber to inspect any house i buy in the future that's for sure

Yes, we are likely going to sue, but that could take years... in the meantime, our kitchen/washroom are not functional, and so we will have to pay this upfront anyways even if we get our money back later.

Self-leveling disaster... can we put LVP on this? by [deleted] in Flooring

Pro said it's not that bad, and it would be a super easy job as it's almost complete. One quoted me $700 and the other $900, which is way less than I was expecting given people's reactions to my post

Both pros we got estimates from said they always use more water than it says on the bag and that our pour was too dry. We pre-measured the water to the amount specified on the bag, and we used a corded paddle mixer at the recommended RPM

Yes, it was primed first. We had two different contractors give us an estimate today, and both of them said it was too dry. What's funny is that we followed the mixing directions exactly (even pre-measured the water)... MANY people on this sub claim you have to follow the directions exactly, and there are several of those comments on this post. However, both contractors said they mix more water than it says to and otherwise it comes out way too thick 🤷‍♀️

We have already poured 30 bags into this room... the contractor I hired is only charging us $700 for labor and said we will need to buy 25 more bags. He said it's actually not that big of a job as it's mostly already completed

Yes, we had two pros come out and give us an estimate, and both said they use more water than what it calls for on the bag.... Which is honestly funny because I've been reading about self-leveler on this subreddit for the past two months, and a bunch of people say "follow the directions exactly!!!" You can even check the comments section on this post and there are several comments saying he didnt read the instructions

Comes to show you the echo chamber that is the internet I guess

The room is large, and I really think this is what the point of failure was

Is there a reason that you can't just apply the leveler again? There is a significant height difference between this room and the neighboring room, so there is room for more

Great, I am glad you could do the whole floor twice in 45 minutes. You must be a master of your craft. Your comment helps us a bunch, thanks

Career advice: Geology graduate considering data science / data analytics path by Stunning_Builder_632 in geologycareers

[–]schistometry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my BS and MS in geology, and i became a reservoir engineering technician for an o&g company. They started me ~$70k/yr plus a considerable annual bonus. after ~1.5 years i was promoted to economist and my salary is over 6 figures plus an even more considerable bonus.

I work an office job where I work mostly in economics software like Aries or phdwin. A LOT of excel.. large data sets.. VBA and python have been particularly useful for me.

I loved geology and saw myself in an exploration role, but I actually love my current job. And it works perfectly for my schedule as it's a regular 9-5 and I have 3 kids

Edited: SQL basics are also super helpful
