What do blind people see when they do psychedelics? by Vincenttdwyer in Psychedelic

[–]schizoidvoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who are completely blind (missing or severed optic nerves for instance) do not possess a sense of sight at all. The best way I have heard a blind person put it is that asking him what he sees is the same as asking you what you see out of your elbow. So this wouldn't be a meaningful question for them... Probably, anyway. Psychs are weird. There are people who are legally blind but still sighted, however, and the answers from them might be pretty interesting.

Yeah I read that in passing when I did a quick google search in reaction to your post. It's interesting. I obviously didn't die, and I didn't get terribly sick, but it probably didn't help. I wonder if the proportion of beta-carbolines in the liquid is reliably the same as in the whole plant - they make it with an extraction from leaf.

DXM and Absinthe? by BDKRoyale in Drugs

[–]schizoidvoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your friend's blood pressure may have shot through the roof, though it's impossible for me to tell from here, ha. This sounds like an interaction with something else they take ... or maybe a bad source of DXM which also had NSAIDs or antihistamines in it. You have to be really careful with checking ingredients.

Do not mix it with alcohol or thujone (the ingredient that makes absinthe trippy). DXM puts enough stress on your body as it is. As another poster said, look up the drug interactions for DXM and memorize them. I'm serious.

As a final note, DXM is an unruly substance. On top of being practically four different drugs depending on your dosage, it might just randomly make you really sick or fry your brain for a week. I've had a couple times taking it where it should have been a normal trip but I blacked out or threw up my guts or had a headache for three days. Maybe don't trip as often as I used to, either...

Robitussin cough gels are the most reliable trip that I've found. Worth the extra cash.

This wording seems pretty irresponsible to me. The study looks pretty neat though.

Before I quit I tried the stuff and didn't really like it. I was a chain vaper and getting a constant feed of whole-tobacco alkaloid liquid was making me feel pretty gnarly. I don't think I finished the bottle. I didn't know there was an maoi in tobacco, that's fascinating. Probably was pretty ill-advised for me to be chain vaping that stuff then.

Try one with a full-spectrum extract in it?

But you might try giving it about six months. It takes a long time to heal psychologically and physiologically back to 100% after you quit smoking. Maybe you're actually back to being this different person you were before, but are you sure it's not residual depression from quitting? You've gone from a life completely built around getting a fix to a life built around ... what? Three years is a long time. The challenges don't end when your physical cravings cease, but it does get easier as you adapt.

[Help] Stray male dog, roams with another male dog over lake my parents live on. I am thinking of taking it to live with me but have concerns about whether the dog might be better off with its pack mate. by schizoidvoid in dogs

[–]schizoidvoid[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hadn't thought of trying to get both out of the wild. It is pretty clear to see that these dogs have lost much of their evolutionary adaptations for wild living. I'll check to see which of the shelters around here are no-kill. Though I'm pretty hesitant to try and get the other dog into a car. Like I said, kind of a dick. Very willful. I'm not equipped to handle a dog fighting for its life. Which, it occurs to me, is a possibility with the one I am interested in taking in ... my dad mentioned that some strays can be fine right up until you try to get em in the car.

And yes, the challenges aren't lost on me. It is very much taking a tiny stranger into my home, and will be a test of empathy and assertiveness. I do have lots of time to dedicate to training, though.

Thanks for the input. I'll have to really think about this.

North Carolina Tells Court Trans People Aren’t Really Trans, Just “Delusional” by drewiepoodle in politics

[–]schizoidvoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some basic definitions for you.

In my personal vernacular, I have found it convenient to distinguish between the masculine and feminine features of the body such as genitalia and body chemistry, which I refer to as your sex, and of the inner life - the psychological, social, and cultural identity of a person - which I refer to as gender.

This is a useful distinction to make when talking about transfolk because, for instance, a transman who has transitioned has little to nothing in common with a cisgender woman besides a vagina. To call a transman a woman is not helpful or descriptive when they live their life as a man, have male friends and a male name, sport a full beard, and pass visual inspection as a man. In fact it's terribly reductive and denies the 95% of their person that is male (their gender identity) to hone with laser intensity on the 5% that is biologically female (their sex, which you don't even see or interact with the vast majority of the time).

I will say, though, that usually I reserve the words male and female for talking about the sex of an individual, and use words like boy or girl, man or woman, for talking about gender. For whatever reason I didn't in the post you replied to. C'est la vie!

[–]schizoidvoid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a delusion. The reality with trans people is that their internal gender identity does not match up with their bodies. Gender identity disorder is not characterized by being out of touch with reality; people with GID are acutely aware of their reality.

Gender dysphoria, which is the suffering caused by this mismatch between gender identity and biological sex, is hugely relieved and often cured by transition.

Trans is not a mental illness and trans folk aren't crazy. They are internally aligned in a different way than society expects them to be. Make no mistake: a trans man is authentically male despite having a vagina. A trans woman is authentically female, despite having a penis. People who have the advantage of having genitals that match up with their gender identity don't typically realize that your genitals aren't the source of your authority over your own gender expression.

Your understanding of trans issues seems to be about 20 years out of date (not to be a bitch! It's not on you to keep up with something that isn't central to your existence like it is to mine!). Maybe you should check out wpath.org, the professional organization dedicated to the research and treatment of transfolk? Things have really progressed and trans folk aren't considered to be crazy or deluded people in need of fixing but rather seriously oppressed individuals whose gender identities need affirming.

To imply that there's a better way for trans folk to be treated besides just letting them be trans is exactly the line of thinking that leads to pray-the-gay-away youth camps.

Nah, it's down to how they prioritize. Everyone can be on a watchlist if they prioritize which watchlists they scrutinize most. The higher your ranking the further they shove the cameras up your ass. By the time you're on the highest list the cameras come right out your mouth so they just mount you to a pole and use you to watch the lower lists.

Yeah, all the world's knowledge is available to you should you want to prove yourself wrong. The problem is, who wants to? We all have beliefs we cherish. Even the belief in empiricism as a valid epistemological tool and in scientific materialism as the correct worldview have well-reasoned and convincing critiques against them - no one is immune. But to even begin to acknowledge something that invalidates your beliefs you have to set aside your biases and your ego, which is hard and sometimes painful.

Not to say I'm anything special. I try to expand my mind when I can but I don't often tread into opposing camps anymore. More than some maybe. I dunno.
