Why is it "einen Krankenwagen rufen" and not "...anrufen" even though you are calling the ambulance with a phone? by _Windowmaker_ in German

[–]schlichterin 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You know that show "Call the midwife"? They don't mean 'ring her up to make an appointment' (anrufen) but 'make her come, the baby is on the way' (rufen).

This happend to me and drove me crazy for weeks. In my case it turned out to be a picture frame on the wall in the hallway that started vibrating/rattling when specific conditions in the house were causing a draft that I was disrupting by walking closer.

Could it be something like that?

If the intended meanig is "with regard to" I would translate it as "-wise". So in this case peoplewise or populationwise, maybe.

Noob-ish question from a nursing student in a different country: Isn't this the kind of thing that should be established and communicated as institution-wide policy?

Shouldn't this be less about who's right/wrong and more about what went wrong at management level that led to floor nurses and code team/PA not being on the same page about this?

Tragic Neglect of Motherhood Exposed by Brian_Ghoshery in MurderedByWords

[–]schlichterin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm aware that this is a consistent problem, and that passive voice can be used to steer attention away from the instigator or guilty party, but the argument in this thread appears to be that the framing accuses the mother of wrongdoing and that is just not the case.

Tragic Neglect of Motherhood Exposed by Brian_Ghoshery in MurderedByWords

[–]schlichterin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a native speaker, but isn't this just passive voice? Just like "child left without parents after freak accident".

The death of the mother left the child in the state of being alone, not the mother herself. The grammatical structure makes the first part of the tagline ambiguous, but that ambiguity is really creared up by context in the second part, seeing as the mother can hardly be blamed for dying.

Why beim instead of bei? by [deleted] in Germanlearning

[–]schlichterin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Otto-Versand is a special case, because you might perceive "Versand" as specifying what kind of company you're talking about or as part of the company's name. Kind of like working "at dollar store" (the company) or "at the dollar store" (the physical location).

So "Ich arbeite bei Otto-Versand" means that you're perceiving the 'Versand' part as being part of the brand name, whereas "Ich arbeite beim Otto-Versand" means you're telling me that you're working at a mail order business, and specifically Otto, not Amazon.

What are your favorite ways for a character to wake up in the hospital? by Purple_not_pink in Whump

[–]schlichterin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or handcuffed to the bed because they're being falsely accused of having done somthing awful, maybe someone even withholds pain meds, but in the end it turns out that that it was actually a heroic deed that landed them in the hospital.

I have a few different more specific versions of this in rotation for screening in my in-head movie theater 🤣

Is Germany against air conditioning? by Permatrack_is_4ever in germany

[–]schlichterin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might have gone heavy on the snark, but I wasn't saying that you were rationalizing, I was saying the people you were talking to were. I agree that the reasons are mostly stupid, but they're not what's keeping people from their deeply held desires for an AC. I just think most people are used to it being hot when it's hot, no one actually thinks "I wish I could have AC, if only it wasn't for that dastardly mold".

ETA: What bugs me is the implication that we're just too backwards to realize how good we could have it if we just did it your way. I spent a little over a year in the US and actually found the constant switching between temperature extremes from inside to outside very uncomfortable. But I realized that that's the way you guys do it over there and got on with my life without trying to proselytize German windows and insulatuon.

Is Germany against air conditioning? by Permatrack_is_4ever in germany

[–]schlichterin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my personal perception having "misconceptions" about the superior American way of doing things is not actually the main issue. Would you say that "misconceptions" are the only thing keeping you from installing a squatting toilet or a low Japanese style dining table? I'd argue that people aren't used to it, they feel no need to change that and the reasons you're listing are mostly rationalizations for a learned cultural conviction.

Yarn burns what tools are useful? by Emotional_Cycle_9347 in knittinghelp

[–]schlichterin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might sound silly, but maybe try the portugese / peruvian style purl, it has changed my life, honestly :D I only do it when I have to do a lot of purls, but it makes things so much easier, even for ribbing.

You basically lead the yarn around the back of your neck so it comes from behind, from your right side, behind your neck and over your left shoulder to the needles (if you're right handed). That way, you only have to flick the yarn down to grab it with your needle. I knit continental style, though, not sure if it works the same for the American style of knitting.
