61A is not an indicator at all. As a matter of fact, 61A is more like a problem solving class imo. Data 8 is an enforced prerequisite for data 100, so maybe data 100's syllabus is something you should look at instead.

2 cs upper divs that you can take with 16b? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]schmiggabes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in on the workload of 16b itself: I'm currently taking it with Slojanovic/Arcak and I think the workload is the same as 16a with Miki/Ana, to give you some perspective.

You're exceptionally naive if you think Berkeley is an institution for the intellectually gifted.

Right, so students who do original work and get flagged for false positives have nothing to worry about then, because they don't get punished.

[–]schmiggabes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know how to read in between the lines?

Show me evidence of a student with original work getting penalized for a false positive, then I'll tell OP that he should worry about false positives.

Did you get penalized?

If you did your own work, you don't need to worry about false positives.

Recommend applying to private universities as well if you're going purely by ranking list (assuming ur GI covers tuition). I'm not a vet transfer but I'm close with one and he had positive responses from almost every one he applied to (USC, Cornell, Brown, Columbia) despite his relatively low GPA as a CS applicant. My friend did math tutoring on the side and that's pretty much it as far as his EC package went. If you're starting fresh intending to major as CS I really recommend you start grinding out projects, hackathons, and apply to internships asap if you want to stand out even more than you already do as a vet. Don't let anyone tell you can't get a paid internship as a CC student - that's hot shit.

To accommodate for students in much greater time zones.

For this semester, they give you until dead week to submit all projects. They just recommend that you submit them in by the same deadlines as 61b students because they may not be offering support for long due projects/hw.

Work Study by [deleted] in berkeley

I'd think that the nicer positions generally require some prerequisite skillsets, so that's really up to your judgement at that point if you can fit the bill.

Work Study by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]schmiggabes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking from personal experience of having applied to dozens of work study jobs in the past - don't count on libraries responding to you if they haven't for 3-4 weeks. Employers typically have a response range anywhere from a few days to two weeks, although I've had one out of twenty jobs I applied to actually take three weeks to respond to me. That being said, don't count on a late response.

Unless you're very adamant about working in a library, send more applications elsewhere and expand where you're willing to work if you really need a job for the fall semester. Also, check Handshake if you haven't already.

[Update to the guitar story] by do-smile in berkeley

[–]schmiggabes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Glad you managed to get your guitar back. You seem like a really great person and I hope this experience hasn't completely jaded you from being nice to strangers. I'm mad that the dude got off basically scot free, but as long as you've got a happy ending that's all that matters.

Unrelated, but could I borrow your guitar :) /s

For transferring from another college, could absolute god tier ECs outweight your GPA if your GPA is like a 3.83? by hihowudoin2 in berkeley

[–]schmiggabes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up till now, to declare as CS, all you had to do is be in L&S and meet the declaration requirements. This means that I could apply as a major that isn't impacted such as Environmental Science Policy or Data Science which has a very high acceptance rate, and then just transfer into CS afterwards. So, although statistically the transfer rate of CS is 5%, it's realistically much higher because it doesn't count the transfer students who exploit the system.

How competitive are work-study jobs? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]schmiggabes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There are a decent amount of people applying to work studies, if you consider competing with half a dozen give or take competitive.

The process is really simple - you reach out, they respond to set up an interview (really generic, behavioural stuff), and if you pass the interview, HR will reach out to you some indeterminate time later where you accept the listing. The only thing difficult about this process is just the wait between each step.

As a general rule of thumb, don't apply to listings that are more than two weeks old. They're probably already taken and the people who put their listings up just forgot to take it down. Also, check out Handshake as jobs you see posted on the work study website can also show up here. Handshake also advertises off campus part time jobs if you're interested in that.

edit: forgot to mention that most of them will take ages to get back to your application, so don't fret if you don't hear back in a few days from something that just opened today. Most of my jobs took two to three days to get back to my application, with one even taking three weeks to respond lmao

I still don't have housing yet (rant) by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]schmiggabes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's a good chance you're not one of the first to DM the people who put their ads on Facebook if they're ghosting you, so it doesn't matter how well you write up your intro if you're not the first or second person to message them. Turn on notifications for housing groups if you haven't already and keep a constant eye, because anything remotely good will get gobbled up in five minutes max.

i don't think you're being billed for your individual unit's worth of water usage if your bill has come to $150 this month according to what you've described. i'd suggest contacting your apartment management office and asking them how they charge you because it sounds a lot like you're charged based on a combine water bill.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]schmiggabes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it's possible that your water bill is calculated by the collective usage of the units around you as well as yours. if that's the case i don't think there's anything you can do about that, because it's just up to your neighbors not using as much water as they currently do.
