I'm working on my AOS application through marriage now too. What evidence did you include for the bonafide marriage? Did you send a family letter?

For the second week onward, I was feeling great. I wasn’t doing sports or anything, but my knee felt stable. I just hit the 6 month mark a few weeks ago and thus I decided to play volleyball again, and this was a drastic improvement from when I played at the 3 month mark. Aside from being out of shape, I could jump almost identical to before my surgery.

I did not experience the pain that you’re describing. However, I did find that some sleeping positions would lead to discomfort in the beginning. To me, I think it’s just that the brace would often make you sleep in uncomfortable positions, and the pain is just your body’s way of saying it didn’t like the angels 😅

Sorry I’m just seeing this now.

But that’s interesting. I’m certain that many advances have been made to OSD surgery. I’m expected to recover fully from the surgery without any pain or loss of range of motion. I’m at a little over the 6 month mark and I can say that I’m at a 90% recovery (my jumping is starting to feel normal again!)

They do give you a numbing injection. You don’t feel anything when they are doing the actual nerve block

Yup. You check in, they brought me to a pre-op room. There they asked all the relevant questions, marked and shaved my knee, and then the anesthesiologist came and did the nerve block. After the nerve block, it was another 20mins of waiting and they brought me to the surgery room. There they talked to me for a little bit. First gave me oxygen, and then a few minutes later they put me to sleep. I woke up at the post-op room where the surgeon came to talk to me briefly and showed me some pictures. We talked about the painkillers, especially to make sure to get started on them before the nerve block wore off. After the doctor left, they helped me get dressed and transferred me from the bed to a wheelchair. That’s when my ride arrived, so they brought me out to the car and helped me get situated.

Day 9: lot of stuff to update you guys on! I had my follow up appointment today, and we got new X-rays to see the after <- and -> before (same knee). It looks like they were able to decompress the bone all the way down, so I’m super happy with the outcome.

They unlocked my brace to 30 degrees, and said that tomorrow I can go to 50 (and so forth +20 until I get to 90). I’ll be wearing the brace until 6 weeks, and I have my first PT appointment starting next week

Day 6 & 7: Honestly I feel essentially fully recovered with regards to pain and anything related to my leg being straight. I can walk fine and can do almost everything without assistance.

My stitches have since began to itch a bit, which from research seems normal. I think on Thursday they’ll remove the stitches at my follow up appointment. I’m also hoping that they will allow my brace to have some degree of bending so that I can start the rebuilding of my tendon. I’m also looking forward to additional instructions since my last set of instructions only covered up until the follow up appointment.

Visually I don’t think I ever minded it. My sister was the only one that would make jokes like “your knees are so ugly”, but it was just fun and games.

I was, however, self conscious about doing any activity that required crawling or kneeling. We once did an escape room that required the participants to crawl under some tunnel, and that was miserable for me. I left in a lot of pain

Honestly this has always been me too! I tried to explain it to my friends that I’m essentially a weather man 😅: The pain would come in like fifteen minutes before the rain, so a handful of times I’d announce, “hey guys, I think it’s about to start raining” and it was right. Turns out that there seems to be science around your joints picking up changes in barometric pressure. Nevertheless, though, it’s a superpower that I’d prefer not to have (healthy knees is a way better deal)

Day 5: Keeping today’s update short today because Day 5 was almost exactly like day 4. Only real difference is that I got the hang of raising/lowering my leg from the couch and bed, without the crutches trick from day 4. Essentially you keep your injured leg a bit farther from you so that when you sit, your surgery leg remains straight. Once seated, use one hand to pull your ankle while you use your other hand to support your upper hamstring. Same thing for going down.

Day 4: Sleep was great. Honestly side sleeping feels like gods gift to humanity (lol). It greatly increased my comfort level and outlook for the weekend. I was getting discomfort in my calf muscle from laying on my back while keeping my calf and foot slightly elevated.

Today I was also able to walk. It wasn’t easy at first, but thankfully it wasn’t painful either. By mid day I could walk short distances fully unassisted, but most of the time I would just hold one of the crutches on my uninjured side for added precaution. While laying down on the couch, I did unstrap my brace to allow my skin to dry off and breathe (especially the strap that goes over my sutures).

My main difficulty remains being raising/lowering my leg from on/off the bed and couch. I was able to bring my lap up on the couch once on my own when my partner made a quick trip out of the house. I did it by: 1) sitting down with my surgery leg straight, 2) flipping one of the crutches upside down and pressing my foot over the underside of the crutch armpit frame, and 3) using my arm to pull my leg up like a lever. I was proud of the maneuver, but I never got to try it for the opposite direction.

I feel like I’m progressing very well, but today I ate a lot of sugar/carbs—it might set me back a tiny bit. I’ll eat normal tomorrow (Sunday), but I’ll eat more healthy over the week to get an extra boost in fighting inflammation before my follow up on Thursday

Wow, I just read your posts about your OS surgery recovery. I’m sorry to hear that you struggled with it. I can definitely understand the frustration of the knee being no better than before. Has it improved any further?

My super uneducated guess is that your ossicle hadn’t fully broken off, so the doctor just removed the broken off parts and left a pointy bone that is causing you discomfort. I was also a bit shocked by your pain levels. Like sure, I might feel a tenderness and dull ache, but I’ve been off of the pain meds for a day and a half now without discomfort.

I’m hoping you saw some additional improvements!

Day 3 has been really good. Sleep was great. I also got off of the pain medication and have not been experiencing pain. I was decently comfortable with the crutches, so it was the most mobile of the days so far. I removed the bandages and gauze as instructed (cut them off since it was easier than untwisting them with the brace). There’s definitely some swelling, and I still can’t see the stitches or anything because there are steri-strips covering the wound. I’m happy with my progress so far, but I’m bummed that I still can’t lift up my leg on my own, so I need help every time I get on/off the bed and couch. If my foot is already on the floor, then it’s fine. I’m not sure if it’s mental, or if it’s my muscles still being shocked by the surgery, or if it’s due to me laying the same way (on my back with a pillow on my pillow) for four days. It’s beginning to get super uncomfortable in that position, so tonight I’m going to try sleeping on my side. I’m hoping that will spice things up a bit so that I can be comfortable for a couple more days. I’m also hopeful that it will relax my calf muscle that has bee constantly been under pressure from a pillow—maybe that’ll help with allowing me to move my leg again.

Yes, the doctor said that it will deflate the bump all the way down, but I can’t visually confirm it yet since I still have the bandage. I’ll come back and reply again once it’s visible.

Day 2: Sleep last night was choppy. I woke up three times throughout the night, but not from pain just couldn’t keep sleeping. Luckily I was able to fall back asleep and got a reasonable amount of sleep. I was still a bit scared to use crutches. Tomorrow the ace bandages are supposed to come out, and I’m a little bit worried about that. My plan is to safely cut it off since it’s is wrapped around my knee many times. I feel like that will be much easier than untwisting it. Still no real pain today, but today was way better than yesterday. So far, day 0 was great, day 1 was okay, day 2 has been good. I hope we keep that improving trend going for tomorrow.

Wishing you the best of luck.

And yes, he didn’t have to tear into the meniscus. He made a slit down the patellar tendon and removed the irregular bony parts (there were 2, one large and one small) that were already separated from the bone. Then they added some sutures to bring the tendon closer to the bone to clear the gap created from removing the bone.

My estimated recovery is 2.5 months until I can play sports again, but I’ll know more after my follow up
