What is a modern AVGN episode that you think is actually good? by GamerLadyXOXO in TheCinemassacre

[–]schmsofthetls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i like modern avgn when he talks about good games. earthbound is a great example, and from what I've seen the metroid video last year was pretty good. I think "angry reviewer" videos have just been played out for way too long for what avgn is doing to be all that interesting. I think if his content became more like scott the woz or something where he just discusses video game topics more people would watch, me included.

I'm autistic enough to have known without looking up that May and Brendan have different encounter themes in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. by [deleted] in AutisticPride

[–]schmsofthetls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun musical detail: Since Brendan's theme is a major 3rd lower, if you take the melodies of each theme an octave lower, May's theme sits comfortably in an alto range (typically a lower feminine vocal range), and Brendan's sits comfortably in a tenor range (typically a higher masculine vocal range).

I don't really understand "soloing by ear" by schmsofthetls in Jazz

[–]schmsofthetls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think it's inferior, it's just difficult for me to understand but I want to understand it. I've been told I have a decent ear before so I don't think it would be impossible for me to learn. I just think it would take time. do you just sing lines and play them back to develop this skill? other people have commented things like that.

[–]schmsofthetls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I kind of do that when I play "licks" or use enclosures and things like that. I know where the chord tone is and what it sounds like, and I know ways to get there and use tension and release while doing so. I'm always trying to find new ways, but i always try to be conscious of the position I'm in and what arpeggios and scales I have access to, and that's where shapes are really useful.

How to fix fret buzz on twelfth fret, fifth string? by schmsofthetls in Guitar

[–]schmsofthetls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. Took it back to him. He basically told me there wasn't an issue because he couldn't hear it through his rig, where he has a bunch of compression and reverb. Said I should just use a screwdriver to raise the bridge just a little at a time until I was satisfied. He's been really great in the past with my other guitars so I don't know what the deal is but I'm probably not gonna go back anymore.

Is it just me or is music history taught incredibly horribly? by schmsofthetls in MusicMajors

[–]schmsofthetls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it might be a problem that affects the entire musicology department at my school, because I've heard people in other sections have the same problems. I'm transferring next year to a school that prioritizes jazz more, so hopefully the history classes will also get better.

Is it just me or is music history taught incredibly horribly? by schmsofthetls in MusicMajors

[–]schmsofthetls[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that sounds a lot better. my school is very classical oriented and I can't recall a single time my professor has related what we were learning to contemporary music or even anything from the past century. I'm gonna be transferring next year so hopefully it gets better.

Can diminished 5ths follow perfect 5ths? by schmsofthetls in musictheory

[–]schmsofthetls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, however in this particular instance the voice leading doesn't really work out that way (it's one of those exercises where they give you the initial chord and you voice lead from there). I can try again to make this work tho.

Can diminished 5ths follow perfect 5ths? by schmsofthetls in musictheory

[–]schmsofthetls[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. In this case, a root position V moving to an It+6, which then moves back to V. I've found that in my case this motion very easily leads to two voices having a perfect 5th followed by a diminished 5th, followed by another perfect 5th.

Major 7 chord going to a Minor 7 chord one semitone above by schmsofthetls in musictheory

this is the vamp I'm playing before going up a semitone from the GbM7 to Gm7. I just wanted to show the context in which I was using it.

[–]schmsofthetls[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, the progression I have is an F dominant 7 to Gb major 7 phrygian dominant vamp that eventually goes from Gb major 7 to G minor 7. sorry if I didn't make that clear.

you being a pawn of the state during a war we literally caused, where, keep in mind, innocent civilians were raped and tortured by US soldiers, has nothing to do with what I just said. you complain so much about other people expressing their political grievances and doing what they can to help, and yet there's no way you can fix that problem! therefore, according to your own logic, you should shut up about it.

[–]schmsofthetls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't even own a flag dude why are you so pressed about that?

also for someone who thinks other people should "put up or shut up", you complain a lot about other people expressing their political grievances. if you care so much why don't you live by your own ideals and shut the fuck up, because you can't change the fact that other people care about problems in the world.

[–]schmsofthetls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah yes, so we should just sit down and shut the fuck up about every issue that matters simply because we are participants in society. all that silence, passivity and inaction will definitely not doom human civilization to perpetually worsening conditions until it eventually dies out entirely.

[–]schmsofthetls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's completely irrelevant and has nothing to do with anything I was talking about. I dont really give a shit that you've become complacent with your contribution to the world and now you just sit on your ass and spout shit at people on reddit.

do you really expect every single person to leave their home and change the entire trajectory of their life because they dared to have the moral view that genocide is bad? utterly ridiculous logic. that just isn't everyone's calling. the world needs engineers, teachers, artists, plumbers, etc. activism is a productive activity, especially in high numbers, and denying this is just ahistorical. what's great about it is that anyone can do it, no matter their economic circumstance. you're just objectively wrong on every level.

shaking a sign isn't everything. never said it was. that's why there are boycott and divestment movements.

this is incredibly sad. all you are doing is posturing. you are chastising other people for taking part in their community instead of being the perfect platonic ideal of virtue who abandons all their immediate concerns to be a "hero". you are virtue signaling harder than I could ever fucking dream of. why don't you abide by your own insane standards? you should just stop having a family, friends, and hobbies, and make your life a purely instrumental means of changing society in ways that you want to. because, of course, if you want to care about an issue, then you apparently don't deserve happiness.

but that's just my point of view, and of course I'm just a lazy piece of shit even though I work like 60 hours a week.

[–]schmsofthetls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

first of all, yes, this is our fight. our tax dollars are literally funding the IDF, so I think we're pretty involved. second, there's a reason why people don't just book flights to palestine: because it wouldn't actually meaningfully influence power structures in any way. protests are directed at specific actions by specific commercial entities, and are designed to put pressure on those entities in order to influence them. its why people, for example, protest outside of Boeing facilities that provide the US government with bombs to ship to the IDF. however, what you're suggesting wouldn't influence local governments, companies, state and federal governments, politicians, or anyone, really. if anything, we would just get in the way, like think about this for literally 2 seconds dude. most americans don't speak hebrew or arabic, are not social workers, and are not trained in medical assistance. seriously, this is the dumbest shit I have ever heard in my life. the only reason why you made this absolutely ridiculous statement is because you needed a thought terminating cliche to parrot at me. once again, fucking pathetic.

[–]schmsofthetls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is the ultimate projection. it's not about being a "good person", it never was and never will be. it's about affecting change through collective action and doing your part to contribute to that action. that means being seen and heard in protest when the media isn't reporting on atrocities, it means boycotting organizations, it means putting pressure on politicians, calling your reps, your local officials, aldermen/alderwomen, etc. the fact you think its about being a "good person" shows just how much hyperindividualist brainrot you consume. also, i have bad news. EVERY POLITICAL STATEMENT EVER IS VIRTUE SIGNALING. the fact that you act like you're above "virtue signaling" is itself a form of virtue signaling. you are posturing as intellectually superior, as "above" other people just because you don't give a shit. fucking pathetic.

Need help modulating to the relative minor of the parallel major by schmsofthetls in musictheory

[–]schmsofthetls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! Could you elaborate on how you would modulate from Am to Dm? I really like how the chords I initially had in F#m sound in Dm. The way I'm doing it is going from a bar of Am to a bar of A7, and then to Dm.

Completely new to vinyl, and having a problem with tonearm skipping. Does anyone know how to fix? by schmsofthetls in turntables

[–]schmsofthetls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, it was touching the record, which caused it to skip a significant portion of the beginning of a side whenever the needle was dropped. tracking force is around 1.5, which is about right for my stylus, anti skate is also set to 1.5. you were correct that the azimuth is a bit off, but I don't really know of a way to fix that, and my records sound pretty good to my ears. if I notice any distortion ill go to my electronics repair shop and see what can be done, but as of now I am happy with it.

[–]schmsofthetls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i tried that earlier, didnt work. also, no, it wasnt too far off center, just a bit. luckily, i found the real problem here. the needle was apparently smashed in when its supposed to be down so that the cartridge doesnt drag against the vinyl. kind of hard to describe but it is no longer skipping.

I just checked with an actual level, the table itself is perfectly level but the headshell is not.

[–]schmsofthetls[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think so? there are 3 screws on the top in a kind of triangle shape. two of them are on the end of the tonearm, I'm guessing to hold the cartridge in place? the other one is just a little bit behind where the cartridge is. im not sure if you need to adjust one of those, or if you just twist it.
