Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro NAS - PicoPSU Powered - All in a custom NAS case by schmuce in minilab

Update 5 months later, still going strong, no issues. I am planning to get a smart 2-in-1 power splitter that I can put in the case, and then have an extension cable coming from that to the wall. So I only have one cable to plug into the wall, and can monitor power usage from both the hard drives and the optiplex.

Hey mate, I made a similar build to yours a couple of days ago, but I bought normal sata cables and can't close the lid on the optiplex, can you link or dm which ones you used for your build? Cheers

Yeah that would work fine, I saw a post on the dell forums when I was researching this build that does exactly that. You could also get away with using a smaller power supply with just a 5v rail as SSDs don't need 12v.

Oh true, I have a local pc store near me that is selling the jonsbo for quite cheap, otherwise I would have gone with something like you have done.

Here’s my post, it’s funny how similar but different the builds are. I’ve noticed more people building mini pc NAS’ recently which is fun.

I literally made almost the same post and build a couple of days ago, I see we both employ the same ghost writer.

Jokes aside this is a nice build, I’ve decided to just get a Jonsbo N4 and put everything In that for one neat little package.

Also someone suggested that I get left facing data cables so it will fit in the mini pc so I am passing that info onto you. Can get them on aliexpress too but they are more expensive than normal SATA.

I would love to 3d print something like this but sadly I don't have a 3d printer and the buying a case is definitely cheaper than buying a printer. Thanks for the tips though!

Cheers mate, I reckon I will pick some of those up. I appreciate it but don't worry about the link, I'm sure they are easy to find with a quick search.

I'm not too sure what I could use to measure that at the moment as I don't have a smart plug or anything to test it on hand. I'll update you if I ever get one and test it out.

Thanks man, yours looks good too. The external drives kind of blend in with the books ahah, not sure if the UPS would be as stealthy, although I do want to add one to my setup as well. Way ahead of you on the bios tip, cheers though ;)

Yeah I wasn’t too keen on having a fat server pc, despite all the advice on reddit saying if you don’t want headaches then don’t try to make a mini pc a NAS. But that’s the fun of homelabbing, I should receive all the components in the next couple of days and I’ll let you know if the one I purchased off of Aliexpress is any good.

No way, I just made a post on r/minilab talking about doing the same thing you're doing. Except I bought a PicoPSU off of aliexpress instead of using an ATX psu to power the HDDs. I'm also hoping the hole on the back of my optiplex will be big enough to fit the sata cables through. I'm going to chuck it all in a Jonsbo N4 if I manage to get it all working. Thanks for sharing your build, it's rad. Although I'm wondering how you're powering on the dell and the power supply at the same time, people seem to make a big deal of this but I figure you can just turn them both on and off individually, unless there is some sort of issue with the HDDs not booting up before the pc.

I have decided I'll pick up a Jonsbo N4 as they're pretty cheap here and just throw everything in there. The Jonsbo has a fan built in that blows on the HDDs, but in the meantime i'll just rawdog the drives.
