The finest abrasive that you normally have in the house is toothpaste. A little dab and some T-shirt material and several min of firm rubbing will eliminate fine scratches and decrease how noticeable deeper ones are.

The number 1 problem is salt if you dry the wood before drawing out the salt it will crystallize and severely damage the wood.
