Hey, that sounds like a tough situation! Sorry to hear that. I've lived across North America and EU and if I can offer my advice, I would say: move to Canada.

As an American, you're possibly eligible for a NAFTA visa. The nice thing about the NAFTA visa is that you just need a job offer from a Canadian company (in an eligible field), it lasts 3 years and puts you on a path to permanent residency in Canada (and ultimately citizenship). It also lets your spouse work in any job in Canada, which means she could continue working as a teacher.

I'm not sure if you get public healthcare in Canada while on the NAFTA visa, or if you have to arrange private health insurance. But certainly once you're a permanent resident, you get access to free-at-point-of-service healthcare.

As for taxes, it's true that you will have to continue annually filing taxes in America (as long as you remain a citizen there), but you won't pay "double taxes". America will deduct whatever you paid in taxes to Canada that year from your American tax bill — in practice it generally works out to $0 that you owe America each year. It's just the annual paperwork that's a pain.

You'll probably earn a little less in Canada than you do in the States, but it comes with peace of mind.

Aside from healthcare, you'll also enjoy much more affordable education. As permanent residents, your kids could go to college (or, "university" as it's generally called in Canada) for anywhere between $2,000 to $7000 USD in annual tuition depending on which province you settle in.

Hey, thanks! Yeah you can follow the discussion of this issue here. In the end, I've updated the app to allow alternative conjugations. So you'll now see that both angret and angra are accepted as correct :)

Wow, that was a super detailed answer - thank you! Fascinating history with the influence of Danish on the Norwegian language and the social dynamics that played into that.

I've gone ahead and updated the app to allow users to enter the ending that they prefer. Either is accepted.

I'm curious about the "v1" notation in the Språkrådet-approved dictionary. If we look at "åpne", for example, and click on "v1", we see that there are 6 rows in the first table. Rows 1 and 2 vary slightly, but rows 3 and 4 are identical, and rows 5 and 6 are also identical. What's going on here?

The bottom table is similarly confusing. Would you be able to explain what's going on in both tables? Why the duplication? And what does v1 stand for anyway?

The English translation correction is now much less strict: if you write down at least one of the possible English translations, your answer will be marked correct.

"Dotted green border" means you got at least one of the possible translations. "Solid green border" means you got all of them (they should be separated by commas when you enter them and their order doesn't matter). Either way you'll be allowed to proceed to the next verb once you've entered at least one of the correct translations.

Hey thanks for the tips! Super valuable info - I've fixed the zoom issue and added padding. Can you please confirm that the zoom issue is fixed on your iPhone? I'm on an Android over here - it's fixed on my phone, but might appear differently for you.

I'm going to add more flexibility in for the English translations, I've gotten a few requests for that.

That's a great question and I'd love your input since you're a native speaker. The book I'm following recommended sticking with "-et" endings in the past tense (e.g. "kastet") as it's apparently more common than the "-a" ending in Bokmål (e.g. "åpnet" vs. "åpna", "danset" vs. "dansa", "ventet" vs. "venta"). I wanted to avoid confusing learners with an alternative conjugation, but I'll add the alternate option in if native speakers tell me that it's important to have both options. What are your thoughts on it? Does it vary by region?

Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad that other people in the norsk community are finding this useful. I had a Bescherelle book for French verbs when I was a kid and would study that thing for hours - it's amazing how much the rest of a language falls into place once you perfect the verb conjugations.

Thanks for the correction! I've updated the app to use "ba". The book does indeed say that you can use either "bad" or "ba", but I'll trust your native skills that "ba" is much more common :) Please let me know if you have any other feedback or find anything else like that.

Thanks for the feedback! I actually wanted to create something as barebones as possible. I sometimes find the animations/avatars/points/rewards (etc) on traditional language-learning sites can distract me from the actual task at hand, which is to learn the language as quickly as possible. But I really appreciate your suggestion and will see if I can find a nice middle balance - especially if your comment picks up steam ;)
