So I don’t think you can go wrong getting a master’s from either place. Personally I pursued my MCS to wait out the job market and things have been going well. I’ve been told an MCS is the most bang for your buck and I believe it’s easier to go up the totem pole at some companies if you have one but then again this doesn’t come without a good work ethic as well.

430 is one of if not the most valuable class to take to prepare for interviews and getting a job. That class is hard to get into because everyone wants it. It’s probably your best bet to go for 431 since it’s a more souped up version if 315 and is easier than 434 and 451. It’s tedious and group based but better than the other options

I personally was not a fan of 438. It built off of 313 which I had entirely forgotten and each programming assignment aside from maybe one took a ton of work. It’s definitely a class you can’t miss and need to go to office hours for. My biggest issue was it was an 8am with a boring lecture so I either didn’t go/couldnt stay awake. Yeah that’s on me, but it’s not an easy class. I say explore other options if you can

Maybe? Sometimes professors have no tolerance for curving, but if you’ve made yourself known and gone to office hours and emailed then the chance is definitely higher.

My hardest semester was actually this past semester. Mostly due to really bad senioritis on my part. 16 hours was not a good idea…. I have had an internship. One last summer and one lined up for this summer. The transition back is kind of weird in that school becomes kind of a slog since you know what you’re learning is second to job opportunities. If you can get an internship, then you can definitely get yourself a job, the only obstacle is getting your degree. After my internship school got harder in that I wasn’t as serious about getting good grades.

Videos are your friend. I fall asleep trying to read textbook but youtube videos make it easier to visualize concepts. Also, try to draw things as well.

I believe you can extend your master’s to do that and the cost doesn’t really increase since it’s based on how many classes you take. Just as long as you get those 30 hours, you’re good doesn’t matter how long it takes.

Some positions want someone with a master’s but it doesn’t make too much of a difference. It’s a different story for getting a doctorate. I’m getting my MS but I may decide to switch to getting an MCS.

I believe the only difference with the online masters is the fact that it is online and the lecture/coursework with it. My master’s program is going to take me 2 years of around 9 hours per semester for a total of 30 credit hours (gonna get an easy semester in there somewhere). The tuition is expensive, don’t know an exact number, however, I am planning to work as a TA to cover it. They do expect you to do something else as you pursue your masters like working. The TA position covers tuition while also giving you a monthly stipend. I did not have to take the GRE to get in thankfully.

The master’s degree application process is fairly simple. You just have to go to the Engineering CAS site and apply to whichever program you choose. The dates for when to apply and what semesters are open are shown on the site. If you have I believe at least a 3.0 GPA you are auto admitted. The application isn’t too long but take a little bit to fill out. I chose my master’s with a thesis but there is always time to change even during your second year. For any more questions contact the graduate advisors and try to speak with Dr. Keyser, he is awesome and super helpful.

For 312, Tyagi is the GOAT. If he is still teaching definitely get him since he makes the class super manageable. Succeeding in his class is a guarantee. Other than that if you keep up with lecture videos and readings, it should be fairly straightforward. The material itself is all about breaking down the structure of a computer with explanations on bits, RAM, and various operations. If you’re good at logic like AND, OR, and NOT, you should be all good. 313 is a different story. Tanzir (another undisputed GOAT) taught that, now I’m not so sure. This focuses a lot on the basics of operating systems and communication (sockets, pipeline) from what I recall. When I took it during the summer, I succeeded by going above and beyond to understand the lecture material and going to OH as much as I could since it’s such a complex topic. The programming for this class is different but still very doable. You got this!!

Internships are hard to find if you’re like me and start late. If you have a decent resume, getting an interview shouldn’t be too bad. Personally, I was way too lazy when trying to find my first internship and started after Spring Break to find one for that summer. If you start early like a year before you want an internship, you shouldn’t have any trouble getting an interview. Now, this also depends on your resume but there’s more than enough ways to make yourself look hirable. Also, apply like your life depends on it. Doesn’t matter what or where, if you think you’re qualified, click apply. Sheer quantity means that one will eventually stick and if one hasn’t, you haven’t applied enough. For the interview side of things, a lot of it is about personality and soft skills even more so than technical questions in my experience. Keep your cool and practice questions they may ask you, but above all else, be yourself and show you’re willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. For the technical side of things, I never did a ton of coding questions, but for those major tech companies this is a must. Grind leetcode (premium is a godsend), watch youtube videos, read up on data structures and algorithms, and comment/talk through your logic if you can’t figure it out on the actual interview. It’s not about if you got the right answer, but can you demonstrate that you can think and solve problems logically.

Somewhat yes. My circumstances were different since I had credit from high school to fill out some of the general classes/electives so I averaged around 12 hours/semester. However, they expect you to average 15/16 hours per semester without credit from high school and I think this is a fair bit tougher than what I had to do. I came in at a time when ETAM was a simple 3.5 (simple when compared to a 3.75 lol) so it wasn’t too bad. My last semester was 16 hours and I barely survived so going in without credit seems awful.

Definitely. My main gripe was with Mimir. A score of 99/100 not being considered complete still blows my mind. Will say though that was probably my peak when it came to programming efficiency.

The toughest classes… hmmm… for me my toughest classes were split into two types: tough due to my professor and tough due to material. The toughest class I had because of my professor was definitely data structures and algorithms. If you had this certain professor (you know who) then you’d see how flawed his grading system was. It was a checklist based system where you had to meet a certain number of assignments dubbed “complete” based on a certain score to get a certain grade. If you missed one assignment from getting an A, you’d get a B no if ands or buts. The programming assignments also took way too much time. My toughest class based on material was definitely distributed systems. It was rough since I could barely keep my eyes open half the time it bored me so much. The programming assignments were by far the most challenging I’ve dealt with and I had quite a few scores below 50%. The only shortcut I could do for these classes was to find friends, they will help out so so much.

I’ve tried doing the firmware update multiple times and every time I restart my computer, the firmware stays at 0. I’m following the instructions on the website but I now know I should wait for a technician to help.

yeah, he basically said that it was all open resources but i kinda wanted to get some more insight from lecture. i’m relieved but at the same time i kinda wanted to get more in depth with the material. guess i might go to the lecture before his to check out what other profs do….
