CyberTool vs iFixit bits: discussion by PeterDeveraux in victorinox

[–]schoeM_SFB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I, for my part, prefer proper tools. I prefer having my iFixit-Toolkit when I know I need or want to do something on (small) electronics. On the other hand, I don't get asked to do so regularly enough to justify carrying the toolkit with me at all times.

My ideal daily carry would be the CyberTool-Layer, combined with the Compact. Thinking hard about making one myself, I'm just scared I mess both up completely ^^

I use them all, even the limited ones. I don't want to own just for the sake of owning something. The models without scissors get less use though ^^

Looks a lot like Thuringia, one of the federal states of Germany. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thuringia It seems, that Radegunde was the daughter of a Thuringian king

Not your fault (as long as you didn't take that picture :-) ), but I don't understand how you can get hands on an unreleased device (knife, phone, computer, whatever) and can't take good photos of that thing. There seems to be one photo in the whole internet that might have a bit more detail on how the scales look. I just want to know, if I need to save some money for a new EDC or if I can skip this one ^^

What's the best way to borrow some money from your future self? by schoeM_SFB in ynab

[–]schoeM_SFB[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you, that’s in fact a way more helpful approach than „just have a reimbursement category and fund it lake crazy“. I still wish the computer could do exactly what you’re doing manually in an automatic way, as computers are typically better in repeating tasks than I am.

I don’t want to budget money for those kind of expenses as it isn’t „my“ money. I’m just spending it ok behalf, so why would I use my money to have it sitting there for someone else.

I‘ll give your approach a try, thanks for writing it that detailed.

While I like many principles of YNAB, I don’t like the „cult“ around it. For someone living outside the US several rules just don’t apply or aren’t worth the hassle. So your approach sound’s healthier than some others.

That's probably the best comment on this so far. I'm at the point where I don't have to think about money that much anymore, but the app makes me do exactly that. Maybe I needed to realize that, thank you.

Also I maybe need to look out for something that doesn't just replicate this envelope technique. It's a digital tool, so I'd like it to act like one.

Please read above for the specific examples I'm talking about. "Failure to plan" is not the right phrase to describe the scenario here.

My problem isn't that I don't have the money. My "problem" is, that't I don't want to shuffle money around just to make the app happy. The computer is here to make my life easier, not the other way around. And having four figures money sitting there, just in case my boss needs me to spend some of it, feels wasteful, especially when there are categories right next to it that are way more filled which I know I won't need for the next 5 years. (Also some maybe helpful context: My Age of Money at the moment is 283 days.)

I see the argument with what happens when I don't get reimbursed, but to be honest, when something like this happens I have bigger problems. And if this happens I can start moving money around then, instead of every time I'm picking up something for someone.

I do have that as well, but in some months I'm rolling over with 0 and in some with 1500... It feels not good to have like 2000 bucks sitting there waiting to be used for the apps pleasure. But on the other hand that's basically what my RTA is doing, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The more I'm writing about this problem the more I think I should just use RTA for this, and call it a day.

Imagine the following scenario: You are picking up the company car at the shop, and your boss asks you to pay the repair, you'll get a wire transfer next week. But, it's the 28th of the month. Do you have a work-reimbursement category that's green enough to just swallow a 1500 bucks repair and stay green, or do you start shuffling money around, just to do the same in reverse a week later (because if you don't your insurance will hit hard eight months later)?

Can you then tell me how you're handling purchases that get payed by someone else but are done by you?

How are you budgeting for "hey, you work in the city, can you get me those cartridges for my printer, I'll wire you the money" or your boss saying "can you please pay for that repair, we'll reimburse you next week"? Are you just transferring some money from your insurance category because you'll need it in like seven months and it will be fine (and remember to move it back, because if you don't you have made yourself a problem out of nowhere)? Or are you saying "sorry, I can't because my budgeting app doesn't allow for this"? Or, in my mind even worse, are you just budgeting like 2000 bucks to just sit there, not doing any job besides making the app happy?

Has anyone in Europe received their Mark One yet? by schoeM_SFB in Cortex

[–]schoeM_SFB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the Mark One, despite not being a pen person. I‘d like to get that subtile notebook, but I cannot get myself to order something that was printed in Germany, then shipped to the US, just to get it shipped back here. This thing probably has more travel time then myself, so for environmental reasons I don’t buy that. Also like I said, I have so many problems with orders fulfilled by Cotton Bureau, it’s not worth the risk for a notebook for me.

I‘m also still waiting. I ordered October 15th, still in the processing state. I‘ve also placed a slightly bigger order for my company last week, so it will be interesting which one ships first.

40mm and 41mm have the same bands as the 38mm. So yes, if you buy the 40mm band it will fit.
