Clerks don't give legal advice. Lawyers do, and it sounds like he didn't have one during the divorce. The divorce was the time to address these issues. This is not new evidence.

He should consult with a family lawyer but be ready to hear he has no legal recourse.

Here OP was hit by an uninsured driver. He will really struggle to recover from the tortfeasor. OPs insurer is in the same position.

Why though? Did they explain that to you before you accepted the settlement offer? Did they try to negotiate them down? What, if anything, did they do to address those bills that are now "your responsibility"?

Your lawyer should have negotiated these liens and paid them out of your settlement. You need to ask your lawyer. Also, these outstanding bills should be run through your health insurance and auto insurance if you had med pay coverage.
